VPX12 New Version now out - New Features - Old bugs?

@johnebaker

The hardware support for generating the preview that INFUSION 2 currently offers is a trifle. If someone is serious about video editing and does not want to have problems playing 8k / 6k files, they will "convert" them into a proxy anyway. Pro X can do it too. However, what's the point of introducing this "new" engine that can't cope with hardware support when exporting to h.264? Pro X only has one if we have Intel iGPU. This is a strange situation because HEVC can be "converted" using the Nvidia GPU. Why can't I use Nvidia hardware GPU support when exporting to h.264? Why Pro X will not use CPU 100% when exporting without hardware support up to h.264?

Unfortunately, nothing has changed in this matter for a long time but we have add-ons for social media etc.

An update on my attempts to export to mp4. (The video was the GoPro footage from that other thread):

  • Using the Default codec, "Video as MPEG-4"; successful export (so different to last time), took 32 seconds, produced file of 17.24 MB
  • Using the Default codec, "Video as HEVC"; export took 7 seconds, resulting (unusable) file, 899.38 KB
  • Using the Main concept codec, "Video as MPEG-4"; took 32 seconds, file was 0 bytes, so inline with experience of others with this codec in earlier versions of VPX
  • Using the Main concept codec, "Video as HEVC"; export was successful, took 1 minute 25 seconds, file was 14.4 MB.

Clearly, the Default codec is the preferred choice for mp4 export but I am very disappointed that the HEVC export continues to fail so miserably. Again, this, for me, is an unwelcome change from VPX 11!

I think I shall be opening a Support ticket on this. I have checked that the drivers for my Radeon GPU are fully up to date; I believe the same is true for the integrated iGPU but will investigate this further.

Any thoughts from fellow-users very gratefully received!

Jeff

UPDATE: All intel drivers etc. fully updated, including installing the latest DCH iGPU drivers, still no usable output with default codec and HEVC. Support ticket opened.

I was brave enough to update to 12, but I shouldn't have. It installs and starts up fine. It can even load my old video projects and play them.. But if I try to zoom into a project it crashes i.e. shuts down and restarts.. If I create a new file and do the same, the same thing occurs i.e simply shuts down and restarts by itself. So it's un-usable. Thankfully I had an older install file for version 10, which I have installed and it's now upgrading to version 11 so I can go back to where I was. There is something seriously wrong with this version.. After having installed it, it offered to download all the extra features, which it finally did. Even after having done that is always pops up and offers it again, and if I say yes, it brings up the extra stuff download dialogue with everything ticked and installed and it just sits there.. I have to cancel it out. Anyway, I'll wait for a while before trying again..

A second user on the French forum is having trouble with the new version. It crashes.

so does mine

Time to start a list of new bugs:

  1. No usable output with default codec and HEVC (by @emmrecs)
  2. Under Templates, Movie Templates - It's not there (reported by users on the English, French and German forums)
  3. Trying to zoom into a project it crashes i.e. shuts down and restarts (by @simmiv)
  4. After downloading all the extra features, it always pops up and offers it again, and if I say yes, it brings up the extra stuff download dialogue with everything ticked and installed and it just sits there. I have to cancel it out. (by @simmiv)
  5. After installation, always crashes (reported by users on the French and German forums).

@simmiv

Could you please explain a bit more about:

  1. What do you mean by zooming in? Zooming in on the Preview Window, the Project Window or on an object under Effects, Size/Position?
  2. You say it pops up? What exactly pops up and when? Can you give us a screen shot?

Any more?

Does anyone have any 8k videos to try out?

An update on the problem of exporting as HEVC producing a static green screen, but with the original audio.

I've just updated my Support ticket with this information:

I have done some more experimenting with that same file and discovered the following: if I select to Export as HEVC and change the framerate from the file original of 59.94 to the standard NTSC rate, 29.97, the export proceeds normally and produces the desired exported file

Anyone any ideas why???

@browj2

Under Templates, Looks - nothing is there (reported by users on the French and German forums)

Assuming this refers to Templates>Movie looks, I have numerous entries! Here's just a part of what I see:

(Those "Vision" ones are LUTS which I downloaded from a link someone provided here in the forum some weeks ago. But there are others there also.)

AND, I don't see that problem of the additional features download screen constantly popping up and then doing nothing. And yes, I have downloaded and install all that additional content.

Hi,

I've re-installed the latest version and rather than multiple screenshots, I've recorded some footage and uploaded on youtube.. What you are seeing is me starting Video Pro X (V 18.0.1.77) and loading a video project called "Video 663". Then I play the file a couple of times.. I then proceed to hit the Plus "Reduce Track Pitch" and then it boms out. After restart I reload the same video file and do a "install extra content" That dialogue comes up and simply sits there with the only option of cancel. Perhaps that is they way it's supposed to be.. In the previous installation of the new version, this dialogue box always popped up on restart, regardless if everything was installed. See the video here:

Hi Simmi,

I don't have V12 so I can't test the first problem.

The second one, Install extra content, the reason why nothing happens is because nothing is checked. In the past, everything came with a checkmark in the left box. Try checking Design 1 and Design 2 and then the Continue button should light up.

Hi John,

All the extra content is already installed, but the check mark boxes are blank and the continue button never lights up.. I try the same action on the older version and it comes up with the dialogue box with all the check boxes marked, plus saying in the description that all the items are installed. The continue button is lit and if you press it, it proceeds to re-download and install all the extra components..

As to the Display Options, I have the AMD Radeon HD 5700 series selected for the Video Mode. I do have the Intel HD 4600 as well, but though my previous testing I found using the 5700 it seemed to perform better for preview while editing. It certainly uses the Intel 4600 during exports..

John,

In my case this wasn't setup in the graphics settings.. I've now set it to the following for the version that still works for me, i.e. version 17.0.1.32..

I haven't tried it on the new version. It takes me a bit of time upgrade to the new one and test, plus then downgrade again back to 17 as I can't use the new version at all. Just waiting for some fixes before persisting again..

Hi

I am surprised you are able to open VPX11 with that setting as in your screen shot as others are having trouble unless the Power saving GPU is selected! Maybe this down to your older hardware? Anyway I would definitely use Power saving if you load VPX12 again - I think you will need to navigate to a new .exe (VPX12) when you make the Windows setting as it is specific to a version of the program.

A couple of the German members said they found that unchecking any reference to Hardware Acceleration in the VPX12 program settings solved display problems they were having. Worth a try.

Hi all

I can confirm that the missing Movie Templates issue is a bug.

I have completed a total re-install of VPX 12,including a new download of all extras, after removing every remnant of Video Pro X11 and 4 with Revo.

The missing templates are installed in:-

C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Video Pro X\MovieTemplates

however this is not being picked up by VPX12.

As a work around I created a new link to the above folder in the Import pane as shown below.

Revised bug list here.

I can make the Word file available. Since I am out of Service, I can't raise a ticket, so you (and others) will have to follow up with Magix.

There was a bug mentioned in another thread recently that you said had been around for a long time. I should have noted it right away but didn't. Do you recall what it was?

I did not review Travel Maps in great detail. I added a bit more for the missing Help.

I added 4 of the 5 that I listed previously (message in this thread) as it seems that one of them is not a bug.

However, Simmi showed a crash in his video after clicking a second time on the zoom button + at the bottom right. Does this happen to anyone else?

Also, some users have complained that some of the transitions do not work. Has anyone gone through the various folders to see if there are any that do not work?

Hi Peter,

I'm pleased that you took a look at the list. As you have probably noticed, I have been maintaining this for almost 2 years with frequent updates posted here and submitted to Magix. They cannot say that they were not aware of any of these as they have replied back, usually with a message that such and such was added to their list, thanking me, etc. Unfortunately, this list still has some nagging bugs and I am disappointed that they have not been resolved, even with a new version, it would appear.

That said, VPX11 works very well for me, at least.

Right now, there is nothing to entice me to extend/Upgrade other than Mercalli V5. I would consider it if they have resolved the bobbing effect of GoPro footage shot whilst walking. I took this up once before here and we did not find a solution.

I would also consider upgrading if Magix fixed some of the bugs, particularly the interface with Xara and the disappearing XAR file content.

Hello,

So after a jump from an old version of VPX (x10) I'd thought to give this version a shot.

This version doesn't allow me to change the aspect ratio (using the 3 dots dialog box) to something like 9:16.
Why would anyone want to do that? Well sometimes footage from my mobile gets rotated and that needs to be adjusted. But that means that the aspect ratio needs to be adjust as well.

The older versions of VPX allowed me to change the aspect ratio to something not in the list but this version doesn't. Not sure when this "feature" was introduced.

Hi

See this topic and this tutorial although they refer to Movie Edit Pro, they also apply to Video Pro X which also has 3 Social Media project settings.

. . . . Well sometimes footage from my mobile gets rotated and that needs to be adjusted. But that means that the aspect ratio needs to be adjust as well. . . . .

If you mix landscape and portrait video/images you have to decide if the project is landcscape or portrait. You cannot have both ie the project changing from one to the other where different orientation video/image occurs.

This does mean that one or the other will be pillar or letterboxed, unless you set the video/image full width width or height using Size & Position and display a section of the video/image or keyframe scrolling the video/image

@marcusdeman

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick reply and solution! I saw the social media profiles in VPX similar to the screenshot you shared and it imported the video correctly as well as at the export showing the correct aspect ratio. Didn't realise they moved the way of working. In this case I think the export will be faster as the rotation doesn't have to be done anymore.

Thanks also for the advice in regards to the landscape / portrait issue but I do keep the orientation either landscape or portrait during the whole video.

Cheers,

Marcus
