VPX12 New Version now out - New Features - Old bugs?

browj2 wrote on 6/8/2020, 7:49 AM

What I presume will be called version 12, the new version of VPX is now out.

Warning! A user on the French forum has complained about this new version being buggy and wants to roll back to version 11. You may want to wait until a first patch comes out.

First question, did they fix any of the bugs on the bug list or other known bugs? See this thread. I presume that the new version replaces the old one.

Second question: as my Update Service has run out and I do not foresee extending it in the near future, especially at the high update price, could some brave person please go through the bug list to see what, if anything, has been fixed?

Here is what is new:

  • New! INFUSION Engine 2 for ultra-smooth performance on virtually all PCs. INFUSION Engine 2 supports video acceleration for AVC and HEVC* on Intel, NVIDIA or AMD GPUs with 1GB VRAM or higher. See below *.
  • New! HiDPI editing interface + modern icon design
  • New! Real-time image stabilization and optimization with proDAD Mercalli V5 Suite
  • New! More intuitive start dialog & automatic format recognition
  • New! 8K Ultra HD support + HDR color space handling
  • New! 1-click cutting tool with dynamic preview
  • New! New fonts and customizable title templates
  • New! NewBlue Filters 5 Ultimate effects pack

This looks like a good version for those doing 4K with new computers and graphics cards compatible with the new features. These are graphics cards such as:

  • *Intel Graphics HD 630, NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1050, AMD Radeon RX470.

Hi John.

As there is no notification on the site yet as to an update is the only way at present to get it to buy the new version? I've looked at the videos, in particular the improvements on reply smoothness. As the last time they said there were improvements that didn't turn out to be so hot I'm wondering if the 'new improvements' will be any better.

Hi John

Well I "took the plunge" and updated, since I had no ongoing project which could have been seriously disrupted if the update proved "faulty".

So far, having reset all the default folders and the actual workscreen to suit my choices, everything seems to be fine. I have re-opened a number of older projects, various file formats, different overall lengths, etc., and have not seen any problems, yet! I have not yet tested any Export but will hope to do so over the next week or so.

As I suppose might be expected, clicking on the update screen to "Learn more" about the "new" features might have led one to believe that the upgrade to ProDad Mercalli Version 5 was an "integral" part of the update; not so, at least it hasn't been available to me so far. Also, the usual Help>Install additional content, only added two items, "Design Elements 1 and 2"; although there were numerous other entries listed on the "Additional Content" screen, the same screen also said that all except those Design Elements were already installed, albeit within the last tow or three days!??

At least everything that was previously available to VPX 11 on my system seems to still be available to VPX 12.

As for those pesky bugs - only a lot of experimenting time will show what, if any, have been squashed and/or what new ones are now present!

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the info.

It's interesting to know that the previous Additional Content now remains, one less thing to do. Someone on the French forum could not find the Movie Looks.

It would seem that Mercalli V5 requires and Upgrade payment similar to Titler Pro 6. I presume that you still have Titler Pro 6 working?

Any idea as to what is in Design Elements 1 and 2 that wasn't there before?

Hi John.

I never had Titler Pro 6, again presumably because my "upgrade" came via the Update Service.

Not had chance, yet, to try and see what is different about the new Design Elements. If I can see or work out anything obvious I will report back.

Re the other (unchanged) additional content: the installation screen seems to suggest it was actually installed at the same time as I was "invited" to renew my Update Service??

Hi Jeff.

The same thing happened to me when I updated MEP which is why I did get the NewBlue Titler 6 program even though that offer had changed to the ProDad Respeedr days previously. Titler 6 does seem very limited in function within MEP though so maybe you didn't miss much.

Hi

Update to VPX 12 - no issues with crashing, still won't start if High Performance GPU selected - I suspect this issue is not a program issue as I have seen some odd activity with Windows Software Protection - requires further investigation.

Testing so far:

  • HWA - appears to be sharing the load between iGPU and NV GPU load approx 75:25 respectively for HEVC export - need to do more testing on this as export time with VPX 12 was longer at 45m compared to 32m for VPX 11 - same 4K UHD project exporting as 4K UHD HEVC - could be due to reversion to older driver and loss of customised settings in the NV card.

  • New interface - appears crisper, although dialog boxes and text appear to be fractionally smaller they are clear to read. had some jerkiness when rearranging the panes, though this went away and is now smooth. Scrolling through video appears smoother.

  • VST's for mixer etc appear to be grouped/categorised now - I could be wrong on this, can any one confirm if this was in 11?

  • Design Elements - cannot see yet what has changed.

Other points:

  • Kept all my custom transitions and collages, dumped my custom export presets.

  • Project loading progress bar appears the goes away after about 1/2 sec - no further indication project is loading - until it pops up on the timeline - it feels slower - could be psychological as not seeing progress bar.

Hi John and John.

No problem for me with the Progress Bar appearing to go away very quickly. I've just opened an older project - quite a big one of a cruise in 2017 - it seemed to take "ages" to open and the progress bar remained visible and "active" for as long as it took. Interestingly (?) after "saving" the project in VPX12, any subsequent re-opening was a great deal faster!

One, for me, negative: inevitably, I suppose, Mercalli V4 which has been on my system for several years (since it was first released for Magix products) now needs to be "unlocked" with an activation key I think I no longer have! Clearly, I need to pursue the "missing" Mercalli V5.

Hi Peter.

No, they are not, unfortunately, since I had to do a complete system rebuild about two years ago.

Interestingly, Mercalli V4 was operational in VPX11, despite "missing" those earlier installs. Also, I found my original emailed activation key for it but entering it, received a message that it was "invalid"!!

I will pursue this with Magix.

Lest I misinterpret anything, I had a chuckle reading John EB's post and particularly, "it feels slower" and "need to do more testing on this as export time with VPX 12 was longer at 45m compared to 32m for VPX 11."

As per another discussion we had in which I mentioned that it seemed that over the years, as Magix announced that the program was faster, it seemed slower.

About Mercalli, I hope that Mercalli V4 does not suddenly become expired and that V5 has no expiry. We have seen elsewhere that V4 has had a 2-year limit. To be followed.

Do any of you have Xara DPX or P&GD and are able to test this to see if the XAR objects become empty after a restart or reboot?

Can someone check right-click on the audio part of a non-proxy video clip and check if the "Edit wave externally" command shows up? If so, change the Audio Editor and check again.

Thanks,

Hi John.

Can someone check right-click on the audio part of a non-proxy video clip and check if the "Edit wave externally" command shows up?

It doesn't, using either an .avi or an .mts file and changing the editor fails to "awaken" it also. IOW, it appears that that option has been removed completely, whatever choice is made for the "Audio Editor", either the default "Music Editor" or something else, in my case SFACL2. The Help file still "describes" the facility and gives Alt+Z as the shortcut; still no dice!

Another retrograde step???

Hello. I was interested in the new Pro X version and in particular the new INFUSION 2 engine. It promises to be sensational. And I did a small test on the Pro X trial version

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for checking. No, this has been on the bug list for a long time. Even prior to that, it was hit and miss. The only one that works for me with VPX11 is Audio & Music Lab Premium.

The workaround is to Solo the track and put in a range, then Shift+D to get a mixdown of just the object(s). Then it works.

@Former user

Unfortunately, the test showed how Magix Video Pro X is still outdated compared to other programs. The new INFUZION 2 engine has not changed much compared to previous versions. I have Pro X (v10) in which the export time is identical. Converting 5 s without hardware support to h.264 takes absurdly a lot of time 48 s. I am sorry to say that the Pro X stands still. It does not develop and what they give is nothing but cosmetic for which you have to pay a lot.

Hi

The comments regarding the new Infusion2 engine not being any faster exporting are based on a misapprehension of what the marketing material actually says.

Read the info on the new Infusion 2 engine - nowhere can I find it states that it makes exports faster - quote (my highlights):

Exclusive to Video Pro X: Seamless editing of video projects in up to 8K*. This is made possible by wide-ranging support for Intel, AMD and NVIDIA graphics card for decoding AVC and HEVC material. * Dependent on the graphics card used. For more information, contact the card manufacturer.

You will also find that the other details of the Infusion 2 engine in the VPX pages only mention smoother playback in program and faster decoding on import- this is very essential for 8K video.

@Michal-MST

. . . . I have Pro X (v10) in which the export time is identical . . . .

Thanks for testing that - my initial tests suggested VPX 12 was slower - I will revisit this when I have driver upddates done.

This post essentially follows on from my post to this thread.

I think there may be a big problem with .mp4 export using the Default codec. As explained in my post to that thread, exporting that GoPro footage to both .mp4 and "using HEVC", using the Default codec, produced only a solid green image. However, changing to the Main Concept Encoder produced successful exports, albeit very slowly, especially when selecting the HEVC option.

I think this is the reverse situation to what users have previously reported?

Can any other user confirm, or otherwise, this finding?

Tested in VPX 12 - no green screen problem here exporting as HEVC with the Default codec - I do not have the MC codec installed.

Hi Jeff.

Although I do have the main concept encoder I have not used it since I first bought MEP Premium. I wasn't even aware it could do HEVC. Although I suppose it could be more versatile in use I found it difficult to get right if not using the presets and the results not as good as using MEPs own MPEG-4 codec.

It's a long time since I've seen a solid green video image. Windows 98 I think. Then it happened when the graphics card drivers tripped up. I have no clue as to what would cause this now.
