Project has Frozen after update using Pro Premium.

CubeAce wrote on 11/21/2018, 10:18 AM

I have just updated to version 18.0.1.213 (UDP3) and upon loading a project found that a Title Template - 3D Decorative Basic had been changed. Specifically the template 'Party' it had changed to a 3D Amination Basic 'Crazy' template. Really odd. I then deleted the changed title and tried to re-import 'Party' to it's original place on the timeline to the same track, whereupon my mouse curser refused to show within the editor at all and the program froze completely. Using the Task Manager I managed to close the program.

I then tried re-opening the project which had not been re-saved and it was as I first found the project after the update. I tried again the change the effect and it froze again along with the mouse curser refusing to appear wihin the editor. MEP is not generating a crash report, probably due to the program freezing. I have also lost the intro screen asking me which project I would like to open although the last project is showing up under the File / Open / Last opened disc projects.

Has anyone else had any problems since the update?

Hi,

No, but I haven't tested it much. However, I started a new project, added the Party title template, then further along the timeline, but with the same video clip, not split, I added the Crazy title template. The name on the template said "Crazy" but the Title itself was the same as "Party On." I split the video clip and added Crazy again and it worked. Strange.

I suggest that you open the project in the new version and do a "Save as..." and save it with a new name, like by appending a rev1 or something to the end. That way you don't lose the version that worked previously.

As for the Intro screen not showing up, try rebooting first. If it doesn't show when you open MEP, then under Program Settings, System, click on "Reactivate dialogs." Try restarting. If that doesn't work, then I don't know.

Yup, since the update the program has been essentially unusable. Can't playback with effects activated. If I do, the program either crashes or locks up.

Is there any way to remove the update? Or am I stuck with uninstalling and re-install?

I should have known better, I usually never install updates as soon as they are available. I never have good luck installing the new updates right away.

CubeAce wrote on 11/21/2018, 5:17 PM

Hi john.

I reactivated dialogues but to no avail. Still no joy with the intro screen is still missing. I'll see if the video the two effects are tied to is indeed one clip. It could well be so I'll try splitting the clip. That may, for some absurd reason, work :-) Fingers crossed.

Hi Peter.

I'm a bit loath to try re-setting the program at this point. I'm afraid that I may lose my links to other current projects as I have changed the directories locations to other than the default drives. I may have to though if nothing else works. I will get to you all if or when I manage to get the project to work. The last time I had a project failure I had to delete everything after the fault to clear it and rebuild from there. This one has a ton of work after the fault so not looking forward to doing that.

I do appreciate all the feedback from you all as I'm really getting into using MEP which on the whole is really easy to get to grips with quickly except when something goes phutt :-) In fact I'm having tons of fun with it.

The only downside I'm finding is trying to make heads or tails of the terms and conditions which may in the end force me onto another program. I don't make any remuneration from anything I do but help charities with their fundraising efforts by producing videos of their fund raising activities.  Often using the charities official logos within the videos. They do, under English law have leeway that commercial companies don't have allowing me to use any footage I take during their activities for public use but if I can't put it together using MEP then I'll have to rethink things.

Sorry to hear Fan1080 (I get that) is also having problems.

Greetings, luckily(?) everything seems OK for me after the update but I'm not involved in any major project again yet.

If the update "blurb" is to be believed the only change operationally was Bug fix for crashes in qtcoreI which John C.B. answered for me here https://www.magix.info/uk/forum/mep2019-update-patch-213--1217689/

My comments in that post and indeed in an earlier post still stand.

Yes, I am also experiencing weird and catastrophic errors since I updated to 18.0.1.213 (UDP3). Program hangs, error messages come unexpectedly. I had to close via task manager and on reopening I lost all objects on the timeline. Basically it has become unuseable.

Hi Peter, where do I find that? Looked in "settings" but could not find it. Thanks.

[EDIT] Ah, got it. Thanks. I am desperate so I will try that.

UPDATE - I took Peter's advice and selected "File >settings>Reset program files to defaults" - and the end story is - IT SEEMS TO WORK!!! I've just carried on with my project for 45 minutes and all seems to be working like a dream - no hangups or weird error messages.

The downside was that I had to re-download and install all the extra content again, so I took a long coffee break while MEP did its thing....

But (WOO HOO!!) I'm so pleased that I seem to have got a stable MEP back.

THANK YOU to Peter and all who posted about this.

I'll be posting again soon on this great forum with positive comments. I'm a real fan of MEP - I love it!!

NEW UPDATE - Well, I thought "File >settings>Reset program files to defaults" had resolved the issue - but no, unfortunately.

I worked on my project for several hours today - (it's a 16 minute tutorial with TONS of text objects ...)... and wheras it was working much better than last night, it's still hanging up on me intermittently (every ten minutes or so).

Each time it hangs, I have to go to task manager and end task. Then I see the name of my project has been saved alongside my original file with a name-chage to xxxxxx_Old.MVP. (_Old has been added).

On re-opening the file (interestingly my file does not appear in the opening options screen), I notice that the mouse mode is set automatically to "mouse mode for all tracks", which got me into GREAT trouble when I tried to copy an object and realised it was copying ALL objects ......

Then it will just hang. It seems to do this after I drag a video object's right-hand edge to lengthen it.

SO - this is annoying and not acceptable for me considering I paid for the software.

My question is - I would like to revert to the previous version. But - a) I don't know the number of my previous version and b) I presume if I re-downloaded MEP 2019 from the MAGIX site it's going to be the latest (18.0.1.213 (UDP) ?

The previous version was very stable. I am rather fed up.

If anyone can give me any help on how to get back to the previous version, I would be most grateful. THANKS! J

fan1080 wrote on 11/22/2018, 11:39 AM

Yeah, I tried the reset to defaults and it didn't help either.

Rather frustrating to say the least. I would like to get projects completed but now I'm at a standstill.

Like you, the previous version was fine, and now I can't seem to do anything without it hanging up or crashing.

I send the crash log to magix every time, so they should be getting lots of crash logs... lol

Jayessarr wrote on 11/22/2018, 12:12 PM

Hi fan1080, I agree - very frustrating! However, I have ANOTHER UPDATE!!! I just downloaded the current TRIAL version of MEP 2019 from the Magix site (i figured that even if it was the latest 18.0.1.213 version, at least I would be no worse off) - and it has overwritten my updated installation - and to my delight I notice it has given me version 18.0.1.209 - the previous version I would think.

Then I got a message asking if I'd like to update to 18.0.1.213 and of course I declined!!

I'm back to playing with it soon (may have to be tomorrow) and I'll report back if is works OK now.

fan1080 wrote on 11/22/2018, 1:31 PM

Does doing that uninstall all the downloaded extra content? It took me almost a complete week of babysitting the download to get it all, not sure I want to be stuck doing that again.

It seems not. When it asked "do you want to install MEP and additional software?", I made sure not to select that option, just the program. I'm pretty sure my extra content is OK. ProDad Vitascene is there, so is HitFilm Superhero pack, which was bundled when I purchased.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE !! - I've worked with version 209 for an hour or so - and - - - - -

NO HANGUPS, CRASHES, or WEIRD MESSAGES so far!!

Fingers crossed it has got me back a workable MEP. I'll report back when I get more time to play with it.

browj2 wrote on 11/22/2018, 1:55 PM

@fan1080

Yes, you will lose the extra content.

When you downloaded the extra content the first time, did you not accept when asked if you want to keep the downloaded content files? If you did, then they would be somewhere like:

C:\Users\Admin\Documents\MAGIX downloads\Installationsmanager

Then, after installing the main program, just execute the downloaded files one by one.

I have not been experiencing any problems with patch 213. Have you tried a new project to see if it works? If it does, then your project may be corrupt. In your project, do a Select all (Ctrl + A), Copy (Ctrl + C), click on the button to create a new movie, Ctrl + V to paste everything. If it's all there, delete the first movie. Save the project with a new name. Sometimes there are problems with the timeline and this seems to sort them out.

Good luck,

Hi John,

Yes I did keep the files, good point, forgot about that option.

I'll check out the new update mentioned above first. If that doesn't work, I'll give your suggestion a try.

BTW, I'm a subscriber on your youtube channel. Love all the tutorials you have on there.

Cheers!

EDIT to add: I tried the copy/paste/save new as well. Still the same lock up and crash. I can't even start snipit to take a screenshot of the error to paste here.

I'm going to try reinstalling and not doing the update.

Hi @Jayessarr

The downside was that I had to re-download and install all the extra content again,

A simple program reset via the File menu should not cause you to download all the extra content. There must be something else going on with your PC or MEP installation.

As you have found out the Trial version is always an unpatched (ie. first ) version of the program. Did you try resetting Windows to a restore point prior to the .213 patching, to get back to the earlier version of MEP?

So. I tried a total reset as suggested. I had to reload content and change the program settings back to point to various directories, basic setup etc.

Results.

I have got my start up screen back.

The program allows complete playback of the file that corrupted with no problems until I try to alter the 'Party' effect back to it's original setting before the upgrade resulting in it still freezing, but this time when I try to shut it down via Task Manager it manages to save before shutting down. Upon reboot it allows a crash report to be sent but then asks me to reload my programs content again.

When I get time I will try again. If that doesn't work I'll try Jayessarr's solution and try to roll the program back. Unfortunately I won't be able to do that until after the weekend.

This is looking like a windows update issue. I reinstalled the previous version of MEP (209) and it is having the same lockup and crashing problems as 213.

I’m currently uninstalling the latest windows updates back to prior the MEP update I did this week. Hopefully that fixes the issue.

Weird that you are happy that it works after an reset-to-default with an new update.

It should not be like this...... just imagine, if Windows update requires a reset to make it work, all your beloved settings and customisation needs to be redone every month (twice or more per month if out-of-band updates).

Bottom line is .... nowadays software are so easy to update, developers just roll out updates without much testing and if the update is not working, they just easily push out another update to fix the update that was supposed to fix another.... etc etc.

Developers should test their code before rolling out... users are not suppose to test for them.

Based on all the reports on Windows update... like deleting you files, stopping certain programs from running ( i think was chrome... microslop forces you to use Edge) and also their previous update broke the audio of MEP. I disabled my windows updates until next year.

At least this will not make me waste hours of my limited free time for my hobby. I would like to enjoy my hobby producing home vacation videos and not hours on pulling my hair out. Boy, I feel for those using this program to make a living.

Again even Microsofty does not test their codes before unleashing it to the world. Millions probably had their files deleted before Microsoft pulled the plug on their latest updates.

Take three.

I re-opened the original corrupted project and just deleted the offending title which had gone from the 'Party' title template to the 'Crazy' template title, which also at the same time had altered what I had typed into the Party title to the wording I had in the next title using the 'Crazy template that I was using further along the time line. Then I played the whole project back after saving the altered project but without adding anything else.

I then closed the project.

Next, I re-opened the project and played it through again. It played OK. I then re-did the 'Party' titling placing it where the original file had been. No freezing of the program happened as a result. So far, so good. I then played the whole file which played OK. Everything was back to normal. Then I saved the project under a new name and closed the program.

Then this evening I came home and fired the project back up.

First thing I noticed was that the project or any project for that matter didn't come up in 'Load Project' startup screen. No problem. I went to the project folder manually and opened the project. Played the project and the 'Party' titling was there, intact, as was the next 'Crazy' titling, then 30 seconds further, another unrelated title had disappeared entirely. Not a trace. Now I'm completely flummoxed. I daren't open another project I'm working on for fear of that also corrupts. So instead I will start a new project and see what happens.

Uninstalled all the latest windows updates, reinstalled all the extra MEP content, all seems to be fine.

Been working with my latest project file with no issues for about an hour now.

Fingers crossed...

@CubeAce -Interesting - thanks for the update. I am sorry you are still having problems. So are you still using v.213? I also found that running v.213 was causing MEP to act not only very strangely, but intermittently - sometimes I, like you, lost objects from the timeline for no reason. Also the "screenshot" error message came up when all I was doing was entering some text! Very odd. Have you considered rolling back to v.209?
I'm happy to report that since doing that I have had no problems and I was able to work on my project for two hours yesterday with no hangs, crashes or error messages.

@fan1080, so just to confirm, you rolled back to v.209 as well as rolling back your Windows updates? I'm glad for you that it seems to be rectified. Fingers crossed for you!

PS I just noticed that if I right-click the MEP program icon (shortcut to the exe file) there's an option saying "Restore previous versions" which I never noticed before. Maybe worth a try?

Hi @Jayessarr

Did you try resetting Windows to a restore point prior to the .213 patching, to get back to the earlier version of MEP?

Peter

Hi Peter, no, it seems to be working now without resetting Windows. If I get problems,I'll report back.

Weird that you are happy that it works after an reset-to-default with an new update.

It should not be like this...... just imagine, if Windows update requires a reset to make it work, all your beloved settings and customisation needs to be redone every month (twice or more per month if out-of-band updates).

I agree!! @wongck.
