As far as I'm aware, no current thumb drive (USB Stick) I have come across is good enough for use with a video editor. The available bandwidth and access times are just not good enough, especially with extremely large file sizes as the file would be broken down into chunks and parallel data access to multiple files poor.
When you said you had a second SSD I assumed a second internal M2 drive or external SSD drive similar to one of these.

I have 200+ Hi8 video cassettes that were converted to mp4 commercially and sent to me on Thumb Drives that work well. I have a 10TB SSD that contains the whole project including several hundred audio tapes. There is over 1000 hours of live music. There are typically 2 tapes per 3 to 4 hour event. I am using Magix primarily to trim each video tape, remove any bad sections, and combine the2 tapes together into one file. Then I upload to YouTube. The final product is www.jhhootenanny.org.
When I process files, I copy them to a home directory (on C:) on either computer from the 10 TB drive on my desktop or the 1TB Thumb Drive on my laptop. So I never process over a USB port. Last night, I attached the 10TB drive to the laptop and downloaded onto my second 2TB SSD on the laptop, avoiding the Thumb Drive.
