Hi, do you know how I can play and edit HEVC/H.265 files in Magix 2021 premium, do I have to pay extra for this, if so, how do I go about getting this codec?
Hi Ray, It's hard to keep up with technology, my computer was top of the range when I got it, now it's 6 years old. So I just have to do what I can with it. It can still edit 4K 8 bit and that's good enough for me. I will try what you advised and see if that works. I downloaded the latest drivers but nothing changed. But will keep you posted

Can you export as HEVC in MEP?
If so either you did purchase the Magix HEVC codec or it is using the installed Vegas Pro codec.

@johnebaker Hi, yep for a long time i've been able to, it was so long ago i can't remember buying it & on this new pc i sort of remember getting the pop-up & all i had to do was click a couple of buttons to reactivate it, it was so over so quick it didn't register in my deteriorating mind 👴🤷♂️😂
. . . . MEP 2017 was probably still using CUDA. . . . .
This version was intel only NVCUVENC ('CUDA') was dropped in 2014.
Setting the Display options, Video mode to Compatibility mode (VideoForWindows) will turn off Hardware Acceleration and allow the CPU to do all the processing.
However, this may cause jerky playback. which can be mimimised by using Proxy files - option is in the Project settings, and ensuring the Lightning symbol bottom right of the preview monitor is turned on (blue).
As I said, this was before I had any experience of video usage and out of my experience zone hence I defer to your more knowledgeable expertise and experience.
Still I was surprised I could get that file to play just using my CPU and I have no idea what that file really looks like seeing it on an 8 bit monitor.
All, I have just downloaded and imported that HEVC file into my 11year-old, no-graphics system running MEP 2021 with no issues. As expected, it plays very jerkily but it does import OK (I have previously installed the HEVC codec from Magix). I therefore surmise that there is nothing wrong, hardware-wise, with Fergie's system, as it is much more capable than mine. It will be a software glitch of some kind that is stopping Fergie importing it.
My display options are:
To reiterate, MP4 encompasses both H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HVEC). If one is recording in MP4, one also needs to choose between H.264 and H.265 (if that option exists).
Thanks for all the support. It looks it's a software issue given that the system is capable. if you can import into MEP 2021 with no issue then I should be able to do the same. Trying to figure this one out.
. . . . The Magix one is just for export converting. . . . .
I beg to differ - the codec both decodes and encodes, as I said here and clarified here, though perhaps not clear enough that I did not have the Microsoft HVC codec installed, this was also double checked trying to play a HEVC file in Windows which failed - no codec.
Additionally, in the manual, page 17, for MEP 2021 is states - *The codec requires a fee-based activation the first time you import or export HEVC material.
Please ignore the last request about monitor ports. It appears those boards have to have an additional graphics card attached.
So if the above settings are not working it appears there is a hardware problem of some sort between the GTX 970 and the way it can communicate with the CPU when using MEP 2021. Or at least as far as I can see.
I've tried all the options you both have suggested but still to no avail. Just wondering is there another video editing software I can download for free just to see if my HEVC clips will work? Then we will know if it's MEP 2021 issue
Some may need additional codecs for exporting as the HEVC encode codec tends to be program specific licensed but importing would still rely on the Microsoft codec.
@fergie Hi, can you go to your icon at the top, click it - My Profile, & fill in your Signature with your Magix version, Windows version & system specs, full name of CPU, GPU, & amount of RAM etc. this will then show at the bottom of the comments 👍 (see mine & other peoples at the bottom of comments) thanks.
I downloaded Filmora 11, the HEVC clips import fine and I was able to load them onto the timeline, no problems with editing or playback. So it maybe my MEP 2021 that's the issue. Even paying for the activation code didn't help.
Yes, Filmora still allows for older graphics cards to be used at present, hence my suggestion. It is only free for 7 days though and has watermarked renders until paid for. Enough possibly to evaluate as it may not do any more than your older copy of MEP.
DaVinci Resolve I'm not so sure about but seem to be able to work using CPU grunt alone, and most other programs are now demanding a currently fully Direct X supported graphics card and a sixth generation CPU or newer.
Also carefully read the usage agreement for Filmora as it can be quite restrictive if you intend to use it on YouTube or other video sharing platforms. Also there are no user forums to see what problems other people have with it or to go to if you have problems.
It's always swings and roundabouts with software. Some good bits and some bad bits.
I would test it for stability first. Add effects, add extra tracks, stress it s bit. It's about three generations behind other current software.
