Movie Studio 2023 and 2022 both have a problem with creating a 4k 3D full width side by side MP4. When I setup the settings as shown in Settings.png I get the error message upon attempt to output shown in “error message.png” The partial output is shown in “Tales of the Arabian Nights abridged 4k full width-LRQ”. Anamorphic 2X horizontal compression works as shown in “Tales of the Arabian Nights abridged anamorphic 4k-LRQ”. Full width HD also works just fine as shown in “Tales of the Arabian Nights abridged HD full width-LRQ”. When I try to output 4k 3D full width side by side using the 2022 Studio I get a different error message.
I created a short version of the failing project and it worked creating “Test3Doutput-LRQ.mp4”. I then tried the failing project, deleting various pieces. When I deleted the first text section, it no longer failed. If I created a text section to replace the one that I deleted, it again failed. Then I tried to output 4k full width 3D from my old projects created under previous versions of Media Edit Pro, and they failed. So the problem is compatibility with the old projects pre 2022.
I created a project “Test3Doutput2” with everything deleted except for the first title, and it failed. I have included the MVP and MP4 output. The Test3Output” is correct output from a short project created with Studio 2023.
There is a problem with 3D display when “Row interlaced” is selected. The interlaced rows are randomly selected so sometimes the Left view is on the even lines, and sometimes it is on the odd lines. When switching from window to full display the image sometimes switches from pseudo-stereo to stereo. Pseudo-stereo is where the background and foreground are switched in depth. The workaround is to either select the other interlaced view, or to slightly change the size of the window. I have provided two “3D alignment” images with different window sizes to show this problem. I seem to remember that the older Media Edit Pro didn’t have this difficulty, but cannot tell which version it switched.
I hate to say this, but the idea that any modern tech or programming should be in any way backwards compatible is a modern misconception. To expect and old project to run without any issues is a matter of good luck rather than good or bad engineering.
If a new project doesn't work then there is a case for argument but whether development of an old technology is worth their time trying to sort out, only they can say.
Magix themselves have often urged people to finish any current projects they are working on before upgrading due to the software not working the same way as the old software. Sometimes the changes are not that great, but other times the tech leaps forwards but has the side effect of not always being backward compatible. Factories, schools, airports and hospitals don't hang on to old hardware and operating systems because of financial reasons alone. Often the machinery those systems operate can't be upgraded because the software needed in no longer compatible with the newer computer specifications and the software has not been updated because only the newer machinery the manufacturers sell use the newer computer systems. Possibly because the components in the new machines they produce has also changed, needing new instruction sets.
Upgrades are only that if they do what the last thing did better. This is sadly not always the case. It would be nice if the trail versions of the programs were not so reduced in function to find out before purchase, but again sadly this seems is not something Magix is willing to do for whatever reason they have.
I have many old projects such as Word documents that can be easily transported to the new format. In this case it seems that there has been some sort of promiscuous changes. It is the title that is being objected to with an error that says something about the color? The title functionality has not obviously changed, so why should it be a problem? Magix is known for promiscuous changes that make no sense. For example, they no longer recognize .JPS as a type of JPG. They didn't recognize it as a 3D image, which is what the extension is saying, but just as a standard JPG. Why did they take it out? The project is just a series of still images with accompanying titles. It works for anamorphic 4k, and for either anamorphic or full 2K, so if the programming is consistent it should work for full 4k. It is obviously a bug in their code. The workaround is to remake the project from scratch.
They keep on changing things from one behavior to another. For example, some output selections would stay the same from one project to another, and then BOOM they started resetting. My favorite is the fact that the 3D settings are reset when the "advanced" button is clicked. The advanced section has nothing to do with the 3D settings, so why should they be reset. The behavior from one type of export to another varies rather than being consistent. Good software developers create a method for transporting old projects to the new formats, or make them automatically consistent. As to upgrades doing the last thing better, the current upgrade seems to actually be slower than the older versions. I have the feeling, as a programmer, that their code is a rat's nest. I have taken poorly written code and fixed it with extra features and made it not blow up. It is possible to keep things consistent with older projects, but it takes good quality control and good testing.
The issue you are having is due to the Stereo 3D effect being applied to the second image in the projects you supplied - thanks for those they made the diagnosis very easy in conjunction with the clue in the error message.
Frame 480 in the export at 24 fps is 20 secs which is the start of the second image.
Exporting that section of the timeline only also gave the same error message.
A repeat of the export using a different image format (BMP) with the same effects applied also gave the same error message.
Test exports removing the effects applied to the second image one by one isolated the cause as being the Stereo 3D effect.
All exports were at 4K UHD 24 fps Side by Side
Why the Stereo 3D effect should cause the crash is a mystery - I would suggest you raise a support ticket and point Support to this topic.
Are the two images in the test project true 3D (Stereo) images or are you trying to create a Pseudo 3d (Stereo).
The post is a copy of the message previously sent to support. There has always been a problem with exporting full width 4k 3D videos, but anamorphic output always worked. It is strange that the 3D selection is connected to the failure. In the past I was able to output HD full width by jiggering the aspect ratio to be 32:9, but now Magix has implemented a much better method. If I didn't jigger the aspect ratio the export was letter boxed. Now the aspect ratio is always selected to be the ratio for one side frame, but the output is 32:9 from the pixel counts assuming square pixels. This is the same as what Cyberlink Powerdirector does quite well. I find PD to have annoying controls and limitations. I will admit to having an annoying genius for finding obscure bugs. For example, I have seen examples of where MEP would export frames adjacent to the ones selected in an NTSC video. The handling of fractional frame rates is not consistent across the program and has never been fixed.
I am running into a problem. I am using studio 2023, with win 11version 21H2 (OS BUILD 22000.63) on a Dell XPS 8940 with an intel i9 processor and a NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti 6GB GDDR6. After placing the video clips on the timeline the video plays. However after beginning to add voice wave files for the first few minutes on the timeline the screen freezes but the play line continues to move across the timeline but nothing changes on the monitor. When I hit the stop button the entire screen freezes up and there is no way to get anything to happen except by using the task manage to shut the program down. I have tried it a number of times with the same result. I even restarted the program and shut down the machine but this did not change the outcome. Any suggestions?
Could you please create this as a new comment, this topic id for feedback on Movie Studio, and you topic is going to get lost in this one, and is also likely to require a longer discussion with more questions.
I purchased Movie Studio 2023. I installed it succesfully and activated the software. When trying to open the software the screen comes up for a second then shuts down. Any suggestions on how to resolve
For those interested, one of the annoying things about the "upgrades" was that the previous version was removed. So I thought would a new full version do the same? Given it's Black XXX day, MMS 2023 Platinum Full is only $70AUD, so I bought it and wa lah, I have kept my MEP 2021 Upgrade with MMS 2023 Full as well. Good.
SPR and Section Handling of SD Analogue AVIs is still borked.
Bad news. You paid too much. Because the name of the product changed to MMS, it does not overwrite MEP. I still have MEP2021 Premium along with MS2023 Suite. You could have just paid for the Upgrade and gotten the same result for less money.
Actually my upgrade to VPX 14 left both my previous paid for versions of VPX in place on my account. I think it looks like It's only when one upgrade replaces a previous upgrade that the last upgrade is removed. I did mention that in a previous post somewhere.
However, as both my current programs are MEP and VPX, previous versions on my computer have been removed.
Aha! I stand corrected. What I have is Plus, not Premium. So, Suite would replace Premium, Platinum would replace Plus. That is why I still have MEP Plus 2021 along with MMS2023 Suite.
So Al, do you have MEP2021 Plus or Premium?
Another curious thing. Was there an MMS2021? Or was that MMS18?
Does MMS2023 Suite overwrite MEP2021 Premium? Or is it just overwriting MEP2022 Premium?
. . . . Was there an MMS2021? Or was that MMS18? . . . .
MMS 18 was the first version based on MEP . IIRC there was no 2020 or 2021 version, and I can find no reference to these versions, MMS 2022 was next with the rebrand of MEP 2022 in January this year.
I understand the situation to be that an upgrade only overwrites the same family of product, eg Infusion based MEP/MMS will not overwrite the earlier versions that did not use the Infusion engine.
Infusion 1 -3 based programs are of the same 'family' so an upgrade from one to the other will overwrite the previous version.
Here we go. I did a rollback to before I installed MMS 2023 full-version, so I have "MEP Premium" Upgrade on my machine. That is, the upgrade version over a few years 2019>2020>2021, each previous version being wiped off by the upgrade. Interestingly, while MEP (upgrades) was just called "Premium" with no year, when the last version starts, the splash screen says MEP 2021. Obviously a typo.
In my current state, with "MEP Premium" (via Upgrades), I attempted to install MMS 2023 Upgrade. It did indeed attempt to wipe MEP Premium:
So, it appears that if you are installing an Upgrade, you'll lose the previous installation, despite the name change.
So JohnCB, I do need that full version of 2023 for $70AUD to keep my 2021 (or more correctly, "MEP Premium").
I guess that I was lucky having MEP2021 Plus then upgrading to MS2023 Suite as I have both. I just noticed that I also have MEP2015 Premium. I don't know what is still on my old computer.
I do find it strange that a new purchase would not replace the previous version, but an upgrade would.

John, I reckon they think that because an upgrade is half price, you shouldn't have access to previous upgrades, whereas if you do the right thing and buy a full version, you can use it forever.
If you wanted to keep previous versions, the trick would be to alternate full-upgrade-full-upgrade.
I don't know the all the differences between an upgrade or new version but I did 'buy' rather than upgrade MEP 2022 two times. Both times the program was on special offer so payed roughly the same as the upgrade price.
I paid on both occasions because I wanted the offered third party packages. They both have different activation codes supplied. I did not activate the second bought copy of MEP 2022 but merely added the third party plugins from the second purchase. Subsequently in my Magix account I have one full version of MEP 2022 that is not registered to any machine. In theory this means I could have MEP 2022 on more than two machines but I think not all the third party effects.
I also bought outright two copies of VPX. VPX 11 and VPX 12. Then I upgraded to VPX 14 and now have no access to download VPX 11 but could still roll back to VPX 12.
When I installed VPX 12 I still had access to go back to VPX 11. When I installed VPX 12, VPX 11 was uninstalled and replaced along with the changes between the programs which included removal of third party effects that would no longer work in VPX 12. One was a set of New Blue Effects. Those are still registered and available from my New Blue account but no longer work if used within either of my current versions of MEP or VPX.
Again VPX 12 and VPX 14 have different activation codes. As Did the VPX 11 which had yet another activation code which is odd as my Upgrade MEP version currently on my computer has the same activation code as my copy of MEP 2020 had at the time. I know this because I keep all my activation codes for various software in text documents on my PC. I also keep all my old emails of purchases.
Any upgrade or new purchase has always removed anything not available to that version of the program such as aac Dolby 5.1 surround and the main concept codec or a third party effect that would no longer work.
