. . . . in which I saw a very good special to upgrade to Video Pro X. I have 2 questions: . . . .
There is a third question - does the upgrade to VPX give me a feature, or features, that I need?
. . . . Can one work on one video while another is being exported? . . . .
In theory you can by opening 2 instances of the program, for example MEP or VPX, however this is not recommended as there may be conflict between the 2 projects and your PC will run slower, especially when rendering in one instance.
Just to add that £300 is the full purchase price, but if you are already an existing Magix user it will cost a lot less. I noticed Summer that this is your first post so welcome to the forum 🙂
I've been using MEP for over 10 years. The popup I got in MEP was a special offer for under $100, and it said the annual updates would be at a discount. It's that update discount I was asking about.

Hi Kami,
Not sure if your post referred to my previous one, which was actually in reply to Summer_220.
If your post was referring to your previous questions about exporting while working on another project, that was already answered by JB immediately after your first post.
You can assume that the annual renewal will be half of the cost of a new version. In my case, it was 250$ CA, half of the current published price of 500$ CA. The plug-in for Hitfilm and New Blue Essentials 3 and 4 came with the renewal.
I have a list of approx. differences between MEP and VPX if you want to know what they are. I tried posting it but the formatting requires fixing so I will make a pdf if you want to know what the differences are.

Thanks, John. This is just what I wanted to know. If it's not a problem, I'd like to see the comparison, although it's the Mercalli 4 that might make it worthwhile for me. Thanks much.

I was also asking about the upgrade price, so I thought your reply might be for me, too.

Aah! That makes sense, but I have only been on VPX for a few weeks, so don't yet know what future annual update renewals will cost. As has been suggested though it will probably about 50% of the full new buy price.
Regarding Mercalli 4, I have it on both VPX7 and VPX and my wife and I agree that it seems a lot smoother in VPX
Are those different versions or different otherwise? (There's a big gap between base and 7.)
I think you may be misunderstanding current Magix' naming policy!
All the versions of VPX from the original (X1) to X7 were numbered consecutively as they were released (as upgrades). With the coming of the "new" policy on upgrades/updates (VPX8 was the first to be, theoretically, following the path of continuous updates without releasing any "new" version - it was "officially" called simply VPX) the current version and, presumably, all future versions, are simply following suit. Only a check in the programme under Help>About can now show which version is actually installed!

Additional buttons on tracks, main ones to mute video and audio separately (MEP mutes both)
Audio - moving audio object to less than a frame
Effects - under Brightness/Contrast - Colour curves - RGB for brightness/contrast and individual color curves Red, Green Blue
Insert LUT - now under Object Properties, Video tab
Effects - under Color correction - 3 colour wheels - the "Highs", "Mids" and "Shadows" ranges can be adjusted individually
Multi-cam - 9 tracks
Multi-language capability - meaning when you burn a DVD you can select the language of the sound track if you created different language audio tracks
DVD creation - import and export PSD format giving you wide latitude for changing the screens, buttons, etc. for DVD burning
Export to EDL for exchange with programs like Samplitude
Movie objects (nested sequences) Movies can be used in other movies as individual objects. These objects keep the action close at hand and can be used as many times as needed within the project.
EDL transfer to DAWs - Audio files can be directly transferred to DAWs such as MAGIX Samplitude using EDL transfer, and you can individually bounce all audio tracks to hard disk.
Loudness normalization according to EBU R128 Complete broadcast capability: Video Pro X offers loudness normalization for professional audio products in accordance with the new international EBU R128 guidelines.
Supports all standard video formats, including AVCHD (Progressive), NXCAM, ProRes, XAVC S, XDCAM or HEVC/H.265 and also professional formats such as AVC-Intra and DVCPRO. The open Timeline in this video editing program allows for easy import and editing of different formats without the need to convert them beforehand.
Native ProRes support Video Pro X now fully supports ProRes video codecs for Apple. Directly integrate ProRes files into your Windows system.
Precise color grading with 16-bit deep color
10-bit/12-bit support for professional formats
Multiple layouts of the windows accessible by using F9 (default layout), and custom layouts F10, F11, F12. I have various layouts and quickly change from one to the other this way. It seems that this has migrated to MEP2018.
Direct access to Xara 3DMaker (I was never able to get this to open in MEP, works great in VPX).
I may have missed a few, especially with the most recent patch containing some new features. You can dig into some of the details of VPX on the Magix.com site.
One I would add to John's pretty comprehensive list is Colour Matching.
If you are using different cameras to shoot similar scenes, you can select the one that gives you the colour that you want, then get the programme to match the clips from the other camera to it. Very useful if you shoot multi camera.
The mute is for the track, not an object. If you do not have video and audio on separate tracks, in MEP amongst the buttons at the left of a track, there is only one M button and if you click on it, it turns off both video and audio, meaning that it turns off whatever is on that track. In VPX, there are separate buttons to mute audio and video. Again, this is for objects on a track that contain both video and audio. If they on separate tracks, then the M in MEP mutes whatever is on that track.
If you have a track that has both audio and, say a title, in MEP, clicking on M for the track will turn off both the audio and the title. In VPX, clicking on the mute audio only turns off the audio, the title will still be visible. Of course, it is not a good idea to mix audio on a track with other types of visual objects, but sometimes it happens and I don't notice it.
