Quality export lower than Go pro Quick

Romain-TOMBOIS wrote on 10/31/2022, 7:51 AM

Hi,

I tried all the possible export settings in 4K. By modifying all the parameters but I never manage to have the same video quality that can i have with the go pro quick application after export. The rendering of my videos is really bad with Video deluxe Premium, pixelated etc... These are action videos made with a go pro 10 in 4k in h265.

Thanks in advance for your help

How I can improve video quality in Video deluxe Premium in export settings as maximum as possible ?

@Romain-TOMBOIS

Hi

What is the bitrate and framerate of the 4K HEVC (h.265) source video - download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the GoPro clips and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Given the export settings you have indicated above, the Average and Maximum bitrate settings are very high for 4K HEVC video, which by design is capable of producing better quality video with lower bitrates then the equivalent perceived quality of h.264 (AVC) encoded video.

. . . . to have the same video quality that can i have with the go pro quick application after export. . . . .

A MediaInfo analysis of one of these files would also give us a comparison.

Hi

There are several differences in the video outputs from GoPro Quick (GPQ) and VDL which means you are not comparing like for like.

The framerates are different ie 59.94 and 29.97 - this will reduce the quality in the VDL export as data is missing.

GPQ also looks to be increasing the Contrast of the clip and adding some sharpening.

The different bitrates, GPQ export of 62.1 Mb/s vs the VDL of 101 Mb/s, shows that the bitrate in VDL is not adding to the quality in any way.

Try the following:

In Effects, Movie Effects :

  • increase the Contrast value setting from 50 to 58 - see note below
  • increase the Sharpness value to 30 - see note below

Export at 59.94 fps with an Average bitrate of 60000 and maximum of 65000 - this will get you very close to the GPQ output.

Compare the exported clip to the GPQ clip.

Note:

Contrast is very sensitive and should not be overdone, you may need to decrease the amount above to get a correct balance. Only you can se the difference.

Sharpening is also an effect to easily overdo, the value I gave is the maximum I will add for 4K UHD video export.

So, I test what you say and the result is the same... The video is pixelated as you can see on the image below...

When i put the video in fullscreen mode the différence is huge...

I think i can search in GOP parameter but I already test differente mode and GOP lenght...

PS : its a action movie

Thanks a lot for your help😀

Hi

When the video is playing do you see the difference?

Still shots of a particular frame are not a valid comparison, especially when they are from different frames in the video. Going back to the days of film, looking at a single frame from a film, you would find the image quality is poor and tends to be grainy, however when playing you do not see this on the big screen.

@johnebaker

Hi John.

The original clip from @Romain-TOMBOIS had a bit rate of 99.4 Mb/s and not 62.1 Mb/s which I think you inferred in your second reply (unless I misread it). That means Romain has lost over 60Mb/s in his last export.

I certainly see quite stark (to me) differences using MS /MEP standard presets sitting at 28" monitors about 3'6" away which is why I use my own set of parameters. My monitors are not even HRD but I can still see random banding and pixel block shifts where fine detail is not prevalent. I seldom sharpen any of my footage as I find it increases shadow noise and over-sharpens edges. Sometimes actually distorting sharp contrasting edges on natural subjects like hands or feet or eyes. That is why I try to keep my exports at least 10Mb/s higher than the originals for 4k.

This is possibly down to viewing condition differences where I have a light level controlled room (no windows) which has constant brightness and measured light levels to my screens, so no reflections or variation in viewing conditions. No lights in my eyes or directly near the screens. Apart from it being to different frames, there is still a lot of variation in the quality of the foliage of the images Romain supplied. Enough to think it would bother him.

@Romain-TOMBOIS

To see if it is a lack of bit rate, try the following experiment. Export with the settings for an 8k HEVC export but change the resolution back to 4k and keep the frame rate the same as the original files. In the settings export using the 'Best' setting and keep the GOP setting to either 60 or 30. In theory this should keep compression to a minimum and should result in a very close to the original copy. All be it with a lot of redundant bits in the file, not actually used to do anything. If all goes well, then look and write down the various bit rates used in the 8K export.

The export may look good but could stutter on playback depending on your computer specs.

Then look at the numbers for the 4K export and try increasing those by about 25 % of the difference between the 4k and 8k settings. Export again and see if things improve. If you get a working solution you can save it as a preset.

Ray.

Hi Ray

. .. . . The original clip from @Romain-TOMBOIS had a bit rate of 99.4 Mb/s and not 62.1 Mb/s which I think you inferred in your second reply (unless I misread it). That means Romain has lost over 60Mb/s in his last export. . . . .

True however Romain is comparing the MMS output to that from the GoPro Quick program which is outputting 62.1Mb/s - hence the settings I suggested - which is also losing 37.3 Mb/s, see the second MediaInfo analysis posted

Hi John.

I often wonder why we can use a Microsoft HEVC decoder within Magix products but have to use a Magix HEVC encoder to export video. I know such encoders can be adjusted by companies for their own requirements and wonder if that is why we see a difference between the Go-Pro Quick Program and the Magix export for similar settings.

One way to find out is if you could upload a short clip to Google drive for us to try to export. Then we could upload it back for you to see if there is any improvement (or for us to see if your result can't be improved).

I'll see if we can't get @johnebaker to join in.

At present I'm doing an all night render I'd already started but I'll get on to it an about nine hours.

I have run both your clips side by side and frame for frame they look identical at my end but when my export has finished I'll put both into VPX, add a frame counter and zoom in on the same frame from each for comparison and put the results back on here as well as trying to export a file for myself to put onto Google drive.

For some reason today the website is not allowing me to upload images.

Will report back later.

Hi

Here is a comparison export of the GoPro sample in MMS 2023 showing the original video, 2 exported versions at 59.94 fps HEVC 60000 kb/s target (average) bitrate max 65000 kb/s IBBP Level 5.1, one with and one without the extra contrast and sharpness settings I suggested above.

Looking at these on a colour corrected/calibrated monitor, both are better than the original for contrast. The image is an export as a still image from within MMS 2023 with all 3 video clips on the timeline and no additional adjustments.

Download the image to be able zoom and move around it.

If you want to look at the original exported image, which is 4x bigger, I will upload it to Google Drive and share.

However, as a slow motion video file it should play at the correct (normal) frame rate.

@johnebaker

Hi John. I'm seeing s slight lack of detail in some shadowed areas but as a motion image they are in small areas and would be hard to spot. One such section is the box on the ground to the right of the tree.

Still can't upload images at my end yet.

I can't find any big problems. Only the Windows Media Player does not play the original file and the exported file correctly.

Both are played perfectly with VLC and Media Player Classic.

With my smartphone I can only play the clip if I encode it in H264 (Samsung A52S 5G)

My export settings are similar to @johnebaker

I changed that...

@Marc-Goder

Hi

. . . .  Windows Media Player does not play the original file and the exported file . . . .

It won't, WMP has been deprecated try using Films & TV which does play them - assuming you have the Microsoft HEVC codec installed - available in the Microsoft Store for less then £1.
