I'm underjoyed. Apart from the AI stuff adverted on the website, nothing's changed in the things I use. The AVI import bug and CameraZoomshot bugs (need to apply SPR to activate the CZS keyframe panel and export fail) still exist.

But probably the most annoying thing is the "new" Record dialogue box:

Looks cool but is impractical because, unless you are a rocket scientist, you'll never remember what those small, arcane icons actually are for. The nerds have truly taken over and useability goes down further.

There is, apparently, an upgrade to the Chroma key function. And also a colouriser for black and white videos. OK. I'd be interested to see who would actually use that.

Still, the Suite upgrade was cheap. Long live Magix! 😊

PS: If you want to transfer your folder shortcuts, before you upgrade, copy your previous INI file from here: C:\Users\Your Windows user name\AppData\Roaming\MAGIX\VideodeluxeXX_premium\Videodeluxe.ini (XX being the latest version on your system; MMS2024 is Videodeluxe30) so you can paste them over to the new INI if you wish. The MMS2025 upgrade will wipe MMS2024.

Thanks Ray, I didn't see that page. I have Mercalli V6 and New Blue from a previous offer and the rest are a bit gimmicky for me; I'll stick with the now middle of the road Suite. 😉

I don't think this helps. Apart from the size I can't see a difference.

The Media Player Classic is an Open source development of the Windows Media Player - search Github.

Hi Andy.

There are definite a few differences between your files and mine. Whether that is caused by the different resolutions or not I don't know but it may explain the really big differences in export times.

Greetings Ray, those particular mediainfos were pur slieshows, no audio. That's why the format is 3:2 and low resolution. Speed is my really the issue I have

Hi Andy.

Understood. I am finding that decreasing the amount of compression is really speeding up the export times and cutting mine down by a third as well as getting a better resolution, still not perfect but very close. File sizes are still around one sixth or less of that of an equivalent MP4 file for quality. Have still found no way to produce a thumbnail. Although my nvidia 3060 can't do any hardware encoding it is getting pressed into service for 3D rendering and video decoding.

The BBC Research and development section had some interesting observations on the subject.

I will leave it at that for fear of going too far off topic.

OK, now I'm scared. I accidentally opened an AV1 rendered video (MS2025) in Windows(11) Photos app - mouse right click. It played OK.

Did something else then reopened Explorer and the AV1 file that had no thumbnail now has a thumbnail.

Played about a bit more and found the same "trick" works with both 8-bit and 10-bit AV1's whether encoded by Nvenc or SVT (Handbrake).

One thing though, it shows the FIRST frame as the thumbnail. If the video start with a fade in the thumbnail is black.

This was a similar idea someone had put forward on the Resolve forum but their suggestion (which was slightly different) changed the file type.

I tried your method and it works (In Win 10) and remains AV1 encoded. 👍

To make sure that alteration held I shut down my computer and rebooted.

To make matters more weird it then showed both my different resolution AV1 files with thumbnails.

Next I will just produce a new AV1 video and see if a thumbnail is generated with out having to do that again. Then another to a different drive. I want to know if this becomes folder specific or file type specific.

Glad you've managed to reproduce it Ray. I can save you a bit of work - the thumbnail creation appears to be folder specfic.

It looks like a windows thing to me(?).

Hi Andy. Can confirm that but running a copy or a transposed video through Windows photos restores the thumbnail again although playing the video in Photos a second time always freezes the image but not the sound on my machine. Also if you transpose a batch of AV1 files into a folder and just run one through Photos they all get thumbnails appropriate to their content. (First frame not being blank of course.).

Definitely seems to be a Windows thing but hey, at least we can get thumbnails. While I don't think replacing original files with AV1 files to save disk space is a good idea, for finished projects if you want them on your drive and save space may be worth it. Whether the time and energy used is cheaper than adding additional disk space may be debatable though. One note. In the programs movie settings adding a still image or trying to choose a frame from the video project makes no difference. You still end up with a first frame so maybe just adding a jpg as a frame to the beginning of an export may work. I will give it a try.

Adding a jpg for one frame at the beginning did change the thumbnail but the subsequent exports had random frame tearing for the first eight seconds of rendered video.

Have you noticed that even the AV1 files without the thumbnails "conversion" show perfectly in the MS Media Pool? Even files that were generated in Vidcoder (Handbrake).

I'm sure that must be significant.

Works fine here with the Microsoft AV1 codec installed, will look at the thumbnail issue again following your discovery, certainly the thumbnail auto selection and manual selection options are not working in the Project settings.

Using the Use image file option above, so it does not have to be on the timeline - looks like it has a bug, it does not work on h.264 or AV1 export - will repeat test and with other formats, after I update to the latest patch.

Hi John.

I meant the old media player. I hadn't realised that Microsoft had reintroduced a new Windows Media Player as a replacement for Groove Music. (shows how often I use these things).

The programs movie section to select a thumbnail hasn't worked for a long time. At least the image selected hasn't been shown in the preview window even in MEP 2022.
