Major incompatibility problem.

This may be a one off but a warning to be careful about using third party OFX plugins.

Trying to use Boris Effects Title Studio caused a crash which has disrupted Windows 10s' ability to show the thumbnail view of MP4 files.

I suspect it happened due to Boris Title studio also having the ability to do size position rotation and has clashed with the code currently employed to do the same thing in VPX. This was not a problem in VPX 12 or has been a been a problem for MEP 2022, Vegas Pro 18 or Vegas Movie Studio 16.

This is Boris Titler showing up in MEP 2022. It also showed up in (and still does) in VPX 14.

An instant before the program crashed out of view after applying the Title, the monitor view showed the image above upside down. Not just the title but the movie clip.

MP4 file thumbnails are viewable in the VPX 14 import section as well as within MEP 2022 but no longer in either Vegas program or Windows explorer. It has only effected the view of MP4 files. MPEG-2 or any other type of file that was viewable before is still visible in Windows explorer.

I have tried several things to get the view back including the most obvious and a few less obvious options.

My main concern is anyone upgrading their editor and using full versions of what could be expensive third party effects that may only be a couple of years old could find they need to upgrade those as well. That could get very expensive. especially if it is not clear whether it is caused by programming or component problems.

What puzzles me is how the Magix programs can see the files in the import section of the program as I showed in my previous image two posts back . . . while underneath the same folder is not showing thumbnails only for MP4 files in Windows Explorer. . . . Vegas certainly can't do that. . . .

Movie Studio and VPX are based on Qt which has its own file browser routines which are very customisable.

Vegas Pro, IIRC, is not QT based and uses the Windows File Explorer API which is why it is displaying the icons.

Thanks for that explanation John.

My son turned up today and went through the system logs for clues. Nothing has turned up and he is against downloading the K-lite pack as well. Looks like I will be shopping for a new drive and returning back to VPX 12.

@CubeAce, looking at the increase of RAM usage with Boris while it buffers the animation is insane. Have you posted in the Boris forum about this?

I'm sure Boris is aware. The more ram a system has, the more Boris Title Studio will use and the faster it renders. It never uses more than a system can handle but just renders slower. I'm sure the same would be said of using a faster CPU or faster ram. Gid's Ryzen system has 256GB of ram and I'll bet 10 to 1 his ram usage will rise during some compiling of effects. I only really need to do that when altering the layout from a template and is one reason I increased my ram. Once rendered and applied ram usage is minimal. I render because when I don't I often suffer jumps in the finished output.

I finally finished the changes to those titles.

Doing a search on the BorisFX forum, I can't find anything related to RAM and Title Studio.

I have the 2019 version. If yours is newer then it may handle differently. (I just noted yours is newer).

During the first Lock down they released the full version for free with a perpetual licence for a limited time (I think a couple of weeks) along with Particle illusion which remains a free download. I have never visited the forums,only their 'how to' articles.

Funnily enough NB Titler Pro has also improved with faster handling after adding more ram although it doesn't use nearly as much. The highest amount of ram I have seen during rendering of a project was 24GB.

Hi.

After all that I gave up and installed just the H264 codec from the basic K-Lite pack and the diagnostic features which found broken registry dll files from between SoundForge and MP4 file extensions. 18 in all. I've deleted all those.

The only thing I can think of is I had used Boris Titler in Vegas just before using VPX. Possibly a part of a program didn't completely shut down. Still a mystery but fixed. I have checked all my audio and video editors and they seem to be running OK.

As for the amount of ram in use. It varies a lot with the template. In general, the more text involved in the base template, the more ram is used when altered. Try the star wars one and add a lot of text although that is not the most ram intensive, there are much worse ones such as the cinematic end title sequences. Also try changing and altering splines, textures, particle Emitters, fonts etc. Go nuts.

Meant to add, I could only use the diagnostic tool if I chose to associate files with Windows Media Player.

@CubeAce as I wrote previously, using K-Lite was a last resort. I am not ready to start over from "scratch" in rebuilding my C: drive. As for WMP being "default" I can change that at any time. But I usually use MPC-BE to play my files, especially the MOV 10bit 422 4K files. WMP chokes on them

As for Continuum 2020, I had that too and never had any issues using it with Vegas Pro. Never a crash. I also have TFX7, which had a new update. I like the standalone TP7. Even within Vegas, it works quite well. My title needs are pretty basic. Using the Star Wars template with nothing added, 18GB of RAM used in the buffering. Once back in Vegas, RAM dropped back to normal for editing.

Hi Ray,

I was worried and going to ask if I should dare install BCC Titler Studio on my new computer. I just noticed that it's already there. I took a chance and opened it and got a lower third title to show up. Nothing broke, but it definitely slows down playback so I had to pre-render. That worked.

I am definitely going to need to learn how to use this. I didn't get far a couple of years ago when we first got it.

Speaking of titling, because of this thread, I decided to install Xara 3D Maker yesterday so that I would have it with MS as well as VPX14 (full plugin version with VPX14). I opened the Standalone and the demo title was this which I added to a background in VPX:

Similar to the Star Wars title but with lettering in 3D.

I got the full version with a HumbleBundle (1$) a few years ago.

Hi John.

For me, Boris Studio Titler is still bugging out in VPX 14 but works in MEP 2022 and Vegas Pro 18 and Vegas Studio 16 on Windows 10. It only fully behaves as it should in both Vegas packages. By that I mean I can see the video it is being applied to within Boris Titler. MEP just gives me a black background and it is not even loading in VPX 14 without crashing the program if I try to open a new template.

Before I lost the ability to see the MP4 files in Windows Explorer It was at least loading a new template and although it worked (animated as it should) within Boris Titler, animation froze when applied to a video clip.

Then when VPX eventually crashed is when I lost the thumbnail views within Windows Explorer.

I'm completely stumped as to why..
