I am, of course, delighted that the pack you mention has resolved the problems for you of the missing thumbnails. However, the concern is always that adding these codecs can, and in the past often has, introduced problems in the running and working of Magix video editing programs due to "interference or incompatibility" between Magix and non-Magix codecs. Clearly, I cannot speak to whether this is also true for non-Magix video editing programs but I belive it may be.

Trying to use Boris Effects Title Studio caused a crash which has disrupted Windows 10s' ability to show the thumbnail view of MP4 files.

Rollback/Restore Point?

@emmrecs, it was the only way to get thumbnails outside of a fresh install of Windows. So far, no conflicts. And, it can always be uninstalled if there are, yes?

Also, there is Icaros which is a part of K-Lite. Maybe that will work. But I am not willing to experiment since everything so far is working for "me".

Nothing else worked to get thumbnails back. No amount of deleting cache, no amount of deleting Thumbnails with Disk Cleanup, nor "Always show icons, never thumbnails" in File Explorer, nothing.

Vegas Pro 20, Resolve Studio 18, Pinnacle Studio Pro 26 Ultimate, and Videostudio Pro 2022 Ultimate are all exporting and exporting/rendering my 4K 10bit 4:2:2 files just fine. But this is on my system.

The question is, will uninstalling revert things back? I don't know. Not willing (at least now) to try. Maybe tomorrow.

I have tried that. It was the first thing I tried. Please wait for me to be able to upload the thumbnails. It doesn't work. I have possibly tried a lot of other things as well such as trying to change associations to different programs and back. My son who is a Microsoft qualified engineer is currently looking into the problems (when he gets time) but it may go deeper. Think about it. The ability must still be there as the files show in both the VPX and Movie Edit Pro 2022. Vegas must be using Windows explorer or maybe it is a part Films and TV that allows viewing of thumbnails (or not). Still investigating but if I can't find a solution by the end of the month I will rebuild my drive or possibly install a new drive.

My son has also warned against adding additional codec packs. I still can't upload any images or video at this time.

@CubeAce when I had the problem, no thumbnails representing video/photos, in all the editors I used, the thumbnails were working. It just wasn't in file explorer, which made it a pain to locate anything specific without loading everything into another program.

I wasn't doing anything like editing when it happened. I can't remember what sequence caused all the representative thumbnails to disappear. But I had work that had to be finished and delivered. Drastic times required for me, drastic measures, meaning installing K-Lite Basic.

I hope you get a solution and post it.

I will consider adding the basic K-lite package as a last resort before replacing Windows. I do have a cloned C: drive backup I made some time back I can switch to in the mean time if the worst comes to the worst and I do want to put in a larger C: drive later in the year. I am just curious as to why this happened as the Boris Title Studio was working up to using it in VPX 14 and why using the two caused the problem.

If Windows File Explorer was open at the time of the crash then I suspect the issue is not directly related to Boris Effects Title Studio, more to the crash.

If you have not already done so try the following:

• run a sfc /scannow check on the Windows 10 OS if it finds an cannot fix one or more errors run the scan 2 more times - you may be left with an item that cannot be fixed - it is not detrimental AFAICS.
   
• Delete the desktop.ini file in the affected folders.
   
• Change the .mp4 file association to another player eg WMP.

My son ran all the tests he could think of on Tuesday by remote including that one and a couple of others.

As I did not do those checks myself to which ini files are you referring to? What folders am I looking for?

The crash happened when I click on apply to a title effect which was running within VPX 14. As I said the last thing I noticed was the clip it was applied to showing upside down for less than half a second as the program just disappeared off of the desktop.

Boris Title Studio uses a lot of ram when in use.

@johnebaker the first thing I did was run sfc /scannow and no problems. Looking in my affected folders, I do not see a "desktop.ini" file. I have check marked "Hidden files".

My problem affected both .jpg's and anything video related (MOV, MP4, M2TS, etc.).

@CubeAce, I just ran BCC Title Studio (I have Continuum Complete 2023) in Vegas Pro on a project that starts at 15GB of RAM. Adding TS to a clip on the timeline, RAM increased by 3GB and that was it.

Only MP4 files have been effected on my system. All other media files pertaining to images have visible thumbnails.

Ray, I was serious. You should consider a daily backup routine. I use Acronis to back up my C drive and normal documents drive every night during dinner (Incremental takes a couple of minutes). I've restored a dead or borked system, like you've encountered, more times that I like to remember.

I always have three copies of all my images and videos. Internal on the PC. External backup drive. One off site at my son's house. I have copies of his files at my house. Both his and my machines have backup drives for each other and we have GB internet connections and can pretty much download or upload at will. I have done this for years. Making sure I have three copies is the first thing I do when uploading to my computer. Even on holiday I have backup SD cards with me. I can use my DSLR to copy files between the two card slots.

There is nothing wrong with the MP4 files themselves or they would not show up in the import section of MEP or VPX. It's Windows inability to now show thumbnails since the VPX crash. The files play normally on any video player, I just can't see a thumbnail image using Windows only, so straight from camera files only have sequential numbers as a form of ID.

Boris Title Studio still works fully in Vegas Pro 18 Vegas Studio 16 and MEP 2022. It does not work in VPX 14 fully. Never has but did in VPX 12. I can open and use Boris Title Studio within the program but it doesn't transfer to a clip fully. Only the text and additional graphics show but no animation once I 'apply' the animated text. It was the applying of such a text that caused the crash. My personal thought is that the animation Boris Title Studio produces has somehow got mixed in with the code within VPX 14s' size position rotation. The clip it was applied to is fine. Unharmed. The project is fine but no trace of the effect being applied has been recorded or part of a recorded BAK file.

All other image file types show thumbnails within Windows. Only MP4 files have been effected.

The desktop.ini file is a hidden file created by Windows if the layout or settings for a folder are changed, if you cannot see one, when the view has been set to show hidden and system files, then it has not been created.

Sorry I missed reading your post.

I was compiling my own altered version of a text effect from one of the many templates. To do that you should compile the changes before applying. It's then the ram amount in use will creep up and use as much as the system has. The more motherboard ram you have the more it uses and the faster the compiling goes. After that and once applied the system ram drops to what you describe. You do not have to compile an unaltered template.

Ah!, OK, those files do not exist in the project folder. How would that effect all MP4 files on my system?

I plugged my external backup drive into an old laptop. All the MP4 files show thumbnails on that device.

Do you mean backing up or cloning?

I have a cloned C: drive I made a while back I could replace the current C: drive with. It doesn't contain Vegas Pro or VPX 14 but otherwise is complete program wise. As for files from applications including emails, documents, etc. They are stored on my backup and external backup drives, not my C: drive. I was contemplating swapping out drives (Booting from the cloned drive) but I think I will install a newer larger C: drive instead as my current C: drive is down to 45GB of free space.

One thing I am wondering is could this be connected to Windows Internet Explorer? It was officially stopped in use for Win 10 last June but is still on my system so I can export mp3 files from MEP and VPX.

Ray, a backup. You can easily restore your whole system drive (as you would do from a clone). After the initial backup, each subsequent backup is only changed files (as I assume you do with your data/video files); you then restore back to whatever date/time you like (similar to Windows Restore but it covers your whole system drive and actually works). I've gone back a day or two quite a few times over the years to rescue my system. This scenario would be just one of those times.

I did try an earlier system restore point from the previous two weeks and it didn't work. I have tended not to keep earlier restore points if the last one worked OK due to the C: drive amount of free space rapidly decreasing. Maybe that has been a mistake but this only happened this past week. What I have a mind to do is set my cloned drive as my C: drive update the programs and files where needed and then put in a larger NVMe drive and clone back to that drive. Either way I'm going to get new larger NVMe and M2 drives for future use.

That suggests the issue is related to the MP4 file association and/or display icon setting has been, for want of a better word, 'borked' (thanks for that one Alwyn, a great non offensive description).

Unlikley, I believe the issue as mentioned above is connected to Windows File Explorer. Was Films & TV the default player (file association) for the MP4 format before the crash?
