Karaoke: how do I do Text underlining or colorfilling for a set time?

Hi

. . . . you can't stretch the fade video longer than it's recorded length . . . .

This is where the use of a solid colour image, as @browj2 suggested above, and in the example I gave above works best.

The one thing the sliding colour change does not do is highlight the whole word at once which, for what you are wanting to do, is easier to follow and time by adjusting the length of the individual image for the colour of the text.

Repeating the image, as many times as is required, is quickly done by holding down the Ctrl key and dragging it with the mouse, then adjust the position and length to fit the words.

@Marc-Goder

Hi Mark.

Thank you. There could be many variations of what I tried including text colour change as well which I haven't tried yet. The less tracks and objects that get used the better or the additional strain on my system at least makes syncing the animation to the audio much harder. There is still this inherent lag of the audio vs visuals when scrolling which makes syncing animation to audio harder due to the way audio has to be handled in video editing but you get used to it after a while. This exercise has taken some time and fiddling around with to get even slightly looking half decent.

@john-x

you can make it shorter but the fade timing is off, leaving gaps, like stated. for this process to work, you would need to do it for every line of lyric / text on the screen (ouch). also, depending on where you place the text, the mask/box needs to be positioned right up against it. it's a good learning process though.

Bingo! and that was what I was aware of from the start. Lyrics often don't use same length words or are sung for the same length of time, even on some choruses. Some songs like Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' is going to be much easier to position the effect and possibly use some of the same object takes for some sections, rather than Joe Cocker's 'With A Little Help From My Friends' where even chorus lyrics are sometimes altered.

Below, now that you have looked at the basics and got a handle on things, have a look at how I used the pngs I posted above and the variations that could be deployed. This one line of lyric took me just over an hour to position out the two png files.

Sorry if the repetition gives anyone an earworm. 😂

Some of the jolting you see above is just in the edit mode of the program and is not evident in the same way in the rendered file. Some of the motion jerkiness is due to the default key frame mode which can be changed to use curves although with MS you can't alter the curves,

Animators would also add motion blur to the trailing edge of any angle of movement to an object in motion reducing the effect on the eye for a given end rendered frame rate that replicates the motion of what, in a camera taken video, would be the motion captured during the exposure time of an individual frame. That takes more skill and patience than I have at present to replicate as it is normally done on a frame by frame basis.

Interpolating frames when stretching an animation never works the way one would hope but over a very short time period of less than a second is hardly ever noticed by someone viewing a section converted that way.

@CubeAce, Hi, this was in Vegas using it's 3D space,

last yr I found this camera aperture online, copied one of the leaves into a B/W image, then made it close/open, the B/W piece had to have the hole that's in it over one of the red dots on the circle, x6, each had some rotation that was fairly simple, but they also had to slide under each other, so each leaf ended up having tilt, turn & rotation,

This clips is only 30fps & I think I've deleted the project which is annoying because it took me ages to work out, esp how to overlap the first with the last..

Hi John.

My comment was aimed at the earlier problem of the smoothness of re-rendering actions if one imported an earlier animated action as a video at lower frame rates and wanted to stretch (effectively pitch shift) it. Not something I would normally contemplate for this type of problem, I wasn't aware of Gids' reply.

my short term (easy) solution to this is to simply insert a count down timer (between lyrics) as another text layer. 😂 might revisit the moving mask in the future... but I can see the mask may be too involved when certain notes / lyrics need to held shorter / longer than others.
