Karaoke: how do I do Text underlining or colorfilling for a set time?

john-x wrote on 2/12/2023, 10:03 AM

this is the final piece of the puzzle for me for making karaoke videos. how do I add a line underneath the inserted text that moves across for a set time? or how do I do a moving colorfill for the text for a set time? the text is already white so a moving yellow colorfill would be perfect. would be most thankful for the answer.

@john-x Hi, I think you're going to get a multitude of answers as there's more than one way to do that, whatever you do create you'll be able to export & then re-import onto the timeline, use Chromakey or green screen to overlay it, then stretch the clip of thee line to a given time length,

Is this line moving to show the full length of the text or of the whole song?

just the length of the immediate text on the screen. say I have the word, in white "test" on the screen for 3 seconds. how do I colorfill it yellow, going from left to right, taking 3 seconds to cover it all?

@john-x Set the length of the text to 3 seconds, then use Chroma key on the text so it shows a colour below it, you could move the colour using keyframes left to right or vice versa, or place a black or white image in between the text & colour, use chroma on that black & move that instead of the colour giving a reveal type effect. You'll have to duplicate the text so the red reveals over the white,

I couldn't figure it out. got a video of this by any chance? text length, I got. I can open Chroma key but dunno what to do after..... is there a tutorial on Chroma key? I did a search on the Help and it stated

"Layer masks

Note: This feature is available in the Plus/Premium version of Movie Studio"

do you know if MS2023 can do it?

@john-x I've done another with an MP4 B/W mask moving L to R creating the reveal, this B/W mask can be added to any text & stretched to time length, I would prob make a long one tho, maybe 1min, then it'll be getting shrunk to suit rather than stretched, stretching just like upscaling a vid can have adverts effects.

Hi. I think @Former user may be referring to this video.

Learning to key frame and sometimes the use of the chroma key effect is very useful.

As Gid said there are many ways get text to work in sync with a sound track but it is all done manually because of individual word lengths and the amount of time spent on screen to show for a given amount of a musical phrase.

Here is my take on such a similar but not quite the same project. I could have taken it further adding the next word fading in underneath toward the top word while the current word faded away but that was much more work.

Project layout. (more complicated that it need have been).

Hi,

Here is what I did while the others were doing the same thing. Not too clear, but you need to do some learning and work.

Duplicate the text onto a higher track with a track in between. Make one text or the other a different colour. Put a white mask in between the tracks, resize (uncheck Combine input fields), give it Chromakey Alpha, and set the Anchor point to the midright. Switch the Alpha arrow if necessary, depending on which track you want to see first. Then, keyframe the movement of the left end towards the right until the line is done (alt. just keyframe the mask horizontal position towards the right) - that is, until removing the mask exposes the alternate text.

In the image below, I show using one mask then two masks, then adding an underline. The second case just exposes the white text line slower to start. The white text is on track 3, the green text on track 5. For the third case, I added a green line that is just a green image resized and positioned then keyframed to match the keyframing of the green text. Uncheck Combine input fields to make the size, put the Anchor point at the midleft, start with width=1 or 0, then keyframe increasing the width with keyframes at location matching that of the green white alpha object.

Aaargh - it's not letting me upload.

I'll try later.

Yes, without the image...

Trying again:

I made the white mask shorter from left to right. Easiest is to just move it to the right instead.

Hi

Applying a little lateral thinking, this is possible to do with no keyframing as shown in the example below, this method does tip the 'normal' arrangement of objects, for what appears on top, on its head.

The blue and red images are the text colours the blue starting colour image is full screen, the red images are set to the width and position of the word to be 'highlighted' and the length to the display time for each word.

The text colour must be white.

@Former user I'm trying to follow your video step by step.

You created 2 (empty) timelines? Or are they black & white images stretched?

You selected black, clicked size/pos/rotation, apply effect, move

-mine doesn’t show the frame around the black space/window when I click apply effect, so I can't proceed / can’t move it. I created B & W images stretched across 10 seconds. what am I doing wrong so far?

Hi Gid,

Good video but it can be done more simply, no need for the first part.

Just use the white image, give it Chromakey Alpha and slide it across the screen.

@john-x

Hi,

You need to learn the basics before attempting the hard stuff and I do tutorials to help users understand what to do. I suggest that you watch them if you want to understand everything that Gid did.

See the list in this thread. Start with Getting started part 2 or 3, not 1 (getting installed). After part 3, go to Basic Editing parts 1 and 2. Then go to Tutorial 038 Preview Monitor Window Commands in Magix Movie Studio 2023 to understand what Gid was doing when he zoomed out the Preview Monitor.

Then watch the series on using Size/Position/Rotation, including keyframing.

As @Former user alluded to, there is more than one way to do most tasks depending on how you want to tackle a given task. You can use what is within the program but you can also make your own custom masks with most photo editing packages and use them. Personally I prefer to make my own custom png files with a clear background as that format means one less effect needs to be used as there is no need to use the Chroma Key for transparency.

You asking this question made me try a different approach to this for myself.

Using the two png images above I did this as a short experiment. If you click on either image above they should be downloadable and able to be saved as png files. Feel free to play with them.

To get the movement and variation in size for the bar image I decoupled the ratios for both resolution and position using the size, position, rotation effect. This may not be what you want but just showing what the program can do once you get more experience and start to figure out your own workflow methods.

@john-x Hi, glad you got it done 👍

'can I use the same B/W fade video for any of my text? or is this something I need to re-create every time? I guess I'll test this later on.'

Yes you can reshape it with SPR etc. & change it's length but I would refer to my previous comment above, whenever a clip gets stretched the pictures that make up the film get spread apart leaving gaps, those gaps therefore need to be filled, Magix duplicates the existing images to fill the gaps, this then can cause the movement of the B/W image to look like it judders or has a stepped motion, If you make the clip longer then you need, then shrink it to suit the length you want, no pictures are added & a smoother movement is the result compared to stretching it, , - That's how I perceive it anyway, it's all about GOP (group of pictures) etc, blah blah 🤣🤣🐇..

PS I've played with this in the past with moving graphics, videos with 59.94fps or 60fps play smoother then videos @ 29.97fps or 30fps simply because there's more pictures showing/playing in the time of the clip. I don't know why it's different between motion graphics & when you just film something,

I can't upload pictures or video...

played w/it a little, discovered you can't stretch the fade video longer than it's recorded length. you can make it shorter but the fade timing is off, leaving gaps, like stated. for this process to work, you would need to do it for every line of lyric / text on the screen (ouch). also, depending on where you place the text, the mask/box needs to be positioned right up against it. it's a good learning process though.
