Intel driver constant update pain

Former user wrote on 12/15/2020, 8:44 AM

Hi, sorry this may be on the wrong page but a little while ago a few of you helped me get my Intel graphics set up.

I updated my graphics driver just 2 days ago to 27.20.100.9030, i constantly have to do this, i get an update msg saying i have an update, i look at the Task manager to see what driver it has showing & it's rolled back to 26.20.100.7262. I download & update it no problem but I can guarantee that after i've updated to their latest driver within a few days i will get another notification of an update & once again my driver has been rolled back to 26.20.100.7262
This is becoming a pain! i update then have to restart my pc every few days, there doesn't seem to be an auto update option,

I think this was discussed but i can't seem to find the post,

can i turn something off to stop it rolling back to 26.20.100.7262, or turn on some kind of auto update,

Thanks 👍

Hi Gid.

I've only just had this update come through. Downloaded and restarted my PC. It seems to have taken. Will update my signature to 27.20.100.9030.

The only thing I can think of is if Windows is not up to date the driver may not take.

Hi Ray, mine pretty much always takes or at least it looks like it has, as in the pics, i sometimes have to download it & install manually but when the next update msg comes it'll roll back to 26.20.100.7262, & just had a look, Windows is up to date.

Hi Gid.

I will let you know if mine disappears but your reported roll back driver version is more than one update away from the present one. Maybe that is the problem. You skipped an update and it may have caused a problem. Is there a way to do an incremental update via the Microsoft or Intel website I wonder?

@CubeAce Hi Ray, just an update, after this last discussion i uninstalled all Intel programs i could find hoping getting rid would stop the driver rolling back, updated windows, then installed the latest Intel driver, restarting the PC between each step, still no joy, i had to install the driver ending in 9168 a few times because it still rolled back to 8280, there must be something else doing this.

This was just now 5th March 2021 😞

Most of the time when i install the new driver it tells me a driver with the same name is already installed & says it's going to exit, but task manager shows the old 8280 driver,

when i try to install the new driver again, it says all's good n ready to restart PC, which i do, Task manager then shows the new driver, this is Task manager now but i've done this so many times now that i can almost guarantee it'll roll back in a few days/week, ,

Hi Gid.

I'm completely at a loss as to why this is happening to you. The latest Intel HD 630 driver was released on Wednesday and is 27.20.100.9316. I never suffer from drivers rolling back. What motherboard are you using?

Do you need a bios update?

Hi

From your description it sounds like Windows is rolling back the drivers, there was an issue with Windows Update at one time overwriting newer drivers on some Windows installations a while ago.

I see from your signature you appear to be still on Windows 10 2004 - is this correct?

Like @CubeAce I have no issues with this version of Windows 10 20H2 trying to revert or install over the Intel drivers.

Hi Gid.

It does look like there have been several bios updates to your board and while I'm with you about not touching bios normally as most manufacturers would say don't do it unless you have a specific problem it would appear you have a specific problem. Unfortunately I don't know what any of the descriptions on the bios update page mean so don't know if anyone of them addresses your problem or not.

One reason I went for Asus for motherboards is their ability for easier bios updates or to roll things back when they go pair shaped.

Can anyone else make head or tail of the updates or is any one of them a possible cure?

Hi

. . . . Can anyone else make head or tail of the updates or is any one of them a possible cure? . . .

Gigabyte say this on the BIOS update page:

'Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. '

This is most likely a Windows/driver issue rather than a crash situation, I do not think any of the BIOS updates would help.

Gid - Windows Settings Update & Security, View update history - will show you what updates have been installed and when. The Drivers section will also tell you if and when the drivers have been updated.

I'm not sure what this means but i've installed the driver ending in 9168 a few times, i have it downloaded/saved so i can reinstall it whenever i notice the 8280 has gone back on Task manager

& again i saw the 8280 was back today (it was yesterday i noticed 😉) so i went online to find the newest driver, the one ending 9316 which i installed today.

Hi Gid.

A quick internet search said it was for Windows 8.1. so I'm guessing not.

Did you upgrade to Windows 10 or do a clean install?

That could be the base of all your problems if you have leftover stuff lying around on your hard drive.

Hi Gid.

All I can suggest is if or when it pops up again you choose the uninstall option if you didn't that time.

I had a similar problem with an additional audio interface for a gaming option I never chose. It didn't show up on my apps section but I kept getting update messages for it. It was a program on the motherboard disc supplied and took me ages to track down.

@CubeAce Yep maybe, I had a look at the driver update program's history to see if i can find more info, there's a few references to it but no info,

But one driver site does say -

Description:

Built into many Intel chipset based platforms is a small, low power computer subsystem called the Intel Management Engine (Intel ME). This performs various tasks while the system is in sleep, during the boot process and when your system is running. It is important that this sub system is functioning correctly to get the most performance and capability from your PC

I had a thought of when i bought this pc, I've been making Youtube vids for a while but not many & not very good, Youtube paid me £50-ish each yr, i was happy with that for my crappy vids that took no effort to make but the start of 2018 they took away the ability for me to monetise my videos because i didn't have a 1000 subs, sods law I'd just forked out best part £1k for this PC and another monitor just so i can make better Youtube vids & maybe make more money, that summer i had to put some effort into my vids, end of the yr i got a 1000 subs & monetisation back, last yr was crap for work/vids but i now have 16,800 subs, the money coming in from YT is still peanuts but it's paid for this PC 😊

@Former user

Hi

Meant to post this yesterday.

I see you are using Driver Boost - is this fighting with Windows Updates with respect to the Intel drivers reverting issue?

Personally I avoid programs like this. Intel updates, such is the IME update and other processor related updates come through Windows updates.

The Intel IME will not show up in Task Manager - it is not a Windows process.

@johnebaker @CubeAce Yep it's Driver Booster, it's the free version but will uninstall to see if it makes a difference,

I got a notice of a driver update & task manager says it's gone back to 8280 again, that driver was only installed 4 days ago, (pics in the comments above) 😒 I got the update because i just reinstalled Intel driver & support software but I'd uninstalled that a month or more ago & the driver was still rolling back so it isn't that.

I haven't installed or updated anything.

I'll delete driver boost, reinstall intel driver n see, 🤷‍♂️🙄😂

So i've reinstalled 9316 again, restarted PC, it shows on the Task manager

But if i look in Settings it shows the 8280 was installed today, something reinstalled that earlier today maybe so that's why i got the notification from Intel driver & support software that there was an update. but why doesn't it show that i just reinstalled 9316 again.

Driver booster doesn't show any driver updates recently

I found this online

so i rolled back the Intel graphics driver in device manager & restarted the PC, but Task manager showed that it just took it back to 8280

So i thought F*ck it, clicked the Uninstall Device in task manager, it asked me why so i wrote a brief reason n uninstalled. & restarted the PC, turning it back on it now shows the new 9316 i reinstalled again earlier, Uh?

Settings still shows 8280 ?

no idea what will happen or if 9315 will stick.

I just tried/testing a movie in Magix & everything seems fine, it exported it as fast as it ever has 👍

I just did a windows update, I can't stop the f*cker 😆

When Windows does a Cumulative update, I wonder if this is inc in that but it's not noticeable because it's mixed in with other stuff, It shows in this update because it is just a single event?

It took it back to 8280

In the Advanced options below windows update

I had Receive updates for other Microsoft products switched on, i've just turned it off, do you think this is anything to do with it. ?
