Instagram Story render bug

Zaza_from_Johor wrote on 5/14/2020, 5:13 PM

I am used to rendering videos for Instagram stories. I am familiar to the ratio and render settings.

I never had problems before upgrading to MEP 19.0.2.58.

I now get this weird rendered clip.

the preview is comes as expected. the rendered video is like cropped.

That are the settings I used.

Have I missed anything?

Hi

Are the source files from a smartphone/mobile device, were they rotated within MEP, and to rotate the images you used the control circled in the image below?

If so there is an issue with the circled control - reset the rotation and use the arrowed control entering a value of +90 to rotate right or -90 to rotate left.

. . . . But what if the file is imported in the correct orientation and no rotation was needed . . . .

A good question, however without feedback @Zaza_from_Johor we can only go on what we see about the source video and known possible causes.

From the image we can see that the source is a DJI device - which one we do not know - and appears to have had no effects applied except, this does not mean the image has not been rotated - the rotation options I circled do not appear as an applied effect on the video object title, whereas using the rotation control arrowed does, as you can see in the short unedited screen recording.

The left object has no effects, middle object rotation using the lower rotate buttons, the third object the rotation dial as you can see in the object title.

I recorded these clips with my osmo pocket. For insta story purposes, I usually record in holding the camera the portrait "way". When I add the files to the timeline I rotate them the way you suggested above (MEP can't make the difference between portrait and landscape). I have always done that and never had a problem rendering Portrait style video before.

Hello Zaza.

It seems we were all correct in our own ways.

I also happen to have an Osmo Pocket so tried it for myself initially using my own suggested settings but addition problems came up along the way. I did get an export in portrait mode after adding John's rotation method.

Let me explain.

Started with my import settings as before.

Opened the project and went to folder containing my clip.

It showed as above but tried copying it into the project. That didn't work. MEP froze for over ten minutes until eventually I got this message when MEP unfroze.

Which is odd as I have QuickTime loaded on my pc and the recoding is definitely an MP4.

So instead I decided not to import the clip and it loaded into the project. I chose 'Do Not Adjust'

So now it's in the timeline sideways, so used the rotator.

Then had to adjust the size.

Seemed to play OK. So exported to MP4

Same settings as project setup.

Result was video the same proportions as original ready for uploading.

Ray.

I hope you got my point - which was a small one - that Zaza's movie setting showed the wrong width but the right aspect ratio - and now Ray's shows the right width but the wrong aspect ratio. I was wondering what affect the conflicting settings might have on what you would see in the preview monitor? I will have to have a play.

Hi Ray,

Digression: I noticed you have 200 tracks specified and wonder if you ever approach that many? My default is 32 and it’s rare I need even that many except for complex collages.

Anyone know if that setting has any significant effect on memory or CPU anyway?

Terry

CubeAce wrote on 5/15/2020, 10:59 AM

@terrypin

Hi Terry.

No, that was a mistake on the setup. I did it in a rush as I often do with brief experiments I expect to not even save and didn't look at the track count. I normally would start with 8 tracks and add tracks as needed for a normal project. I think the most amount of tracks I've ever used was around 28 and I often end up muting a lot of tracks before exporting. I think I do that because my eyes are not good at picking out track names at a glance in MEP. The colour palette and strength of colour in those areas just don't seem to work for me and there seems no way to adjust them. So normally I would group tracks by the colour of the track alone. Green for audio, purple for Sub text. Red for main text etc. But even then that tends to get done when eventually I'm ready to archive it and not while in use. Ideally I like to be able to see all the tracks on one screen so the count seldom creeps up that much.

Sorry for the delay in posting an update... with lockdown and everything .. I have not been able to film until now.

I just rendered a new IGTV video...... It features some clips that was filmed in portrait mode with my phone and also with the Osmo pocket. The preview shows correctly. but the video rendered has some issues with the section where the Osmo was used (in portrait): it still show with cropped(?) or shrinked footage

Hi Zaza.

I'm confused.

Does this show correctly when editing? Are you using the size / position as well as rotation to place the videos centrally?

Are you producing a complete video and then uploading to YouTube (preferred) or trying to use MEPs export to YouTube / Instagram / etc. feature? (which doesn't seem to work at the best of times).

Hi

The issues in the video are typical of using the wrong Rotation control as I mentioned above- see this tutorial and compare what I did to what you have done.

Once the project is set up correctly it is very important to not use the 'Adjust preview monitor' if a video is imported which the program thinks is landscape, and to use the rotation dial to correct the orientation.

Ray.

The preview shows correctly.

the rendering is wrong only from the files filmed with the Osmo pocket since I upgraded to the latest MEP version - Never was this a problem before. I can use footage from my mobile phone in portrait mode without a problem.

Clips on the time line are letterboxed then I use the rotate option in Rotation/mirror module.

I always render to a file then upload to Youtube or IGTV

I use the same method and never adjust preview monitor...... still I get this cropped shrink video on the section that originated from the Osmo pocket clips.

So who is to blame... Osmo or MEP??

Hi

. . . . still I get this cropped shrink video on the section that originated from the Osmo pocket clips . . . .

Are there any other effects applied to the clip that is doing this eg Section ?

No only the rotate option in Rotation/mirror module
