Importing video file saved from camera - no audio in Movie Studio

Terry-Schmidt wrote on 6/7/2023, 8:07 PM

When creating new content, I'm importing the video files and there is no audio, have tried mix down and other things listed in the forums here, but the audio track appears empty.

@Terry-Schmidt Hi, to my novice eye that file looks ok, AAC LC audio format is very common, I don't know what Hisilicon VIDEO/AUDIO is apart from what i can read online, - "HiSilicon Video Encoder suffers from an unauthenticated RTSP buffer overflow vulnerability that can cause a denial of service condition", that mentions an encoder so whether that relates in any way to your issue ??

You could share a file on Google Drive if you wish so it can be tried, ?

Hi Gid.

It's also variable frame rate by a ten fps difference. Unusual file and frame rates for an MP4 encoding.

Hislicon is part of Huawei's semiconductor manufacturing

@CubeAce Hi, I ignored that bit, all my phone vids are variable, some of them just a tad more than others but it's never resulted in loss of audio, if you compare his to mine to me it isn't an unusual file

This one's 'slightly' variable but plays fine.

Hislicon is part of Huawei's....

I read that online & that name gave me a shiver, like slight nausea, I had a Huawei phone a few yrs ago, Worst phone ever, I've disliked phones but never hated one before 🤮 I couldn't wait till my contract was up & ended up paying the early upgrade fee 😂

---------

This is them side by side, mine on the right, there's less info in the OP's version but what is there is very similar to mine on the right, like i say to my novice eye ..

Hi Gid.

Out of all of us you probably have had the least trouble with variable frame rate videos. That's possibly down to your rig being somewhat higher tier than the rest of us have even now. It's possible that the file just needs more processing power than they have. The more compression a file has the more processing needed to decode it.

As for the Huawii phone. Also being a lower tier user of phones I loved my Huawii phone over my lower end Galaxy phone as the audio, camera and screen were much better for the price. It was also a lot lighter and had a thumb swipe pad on the back which I used a lot for swiping images and web browsing.

Hi

Looking at the MediaInfo data the video is very typical of h.264 (AVC) video and AAC encoded audio the bitrates and sample rates are good for this being mobile phone footage. The variable framerate is also typical from mobile devices and in this instance, the range is not excessive at < ± 9% and is unlikely to be the cause the lack of audio issue.

What is the full name and version number of the Movie Studio are you using? See under Help, About for the version number

Assuming Magix Movie Studio 18 (v17.x.x.x ?) or higher:

Does the video clip play OK with sound when played in Windows Media Player or Films & TV?

@CubeAce Hi,  I'm sure you're right about the performance reg my PC + variable frame rates but my last PC was an i7 7700, 64GB RAM with GTX1660 card, If I booted it up again I'd prob be frustrated with the speed of it but I don't remember there being too much trouble with playback or loss of audio & I've always used phone clips,
It's only in the last couple of yrs I've had to convert to constant or ProRes & that's to get better playback in Vegas not MMS,
We'll have to see what the OP replies with...

Yes, audio plays normally from all windows players I have installed.

also, importing to a different video editor works with sound, but that editor doesn't have the features I was hoping to take advantage of with the Magix studio.

also, I'm using Magix studio 2023 (suite).

also, just tested with my ancient GoPro saved video clips, and they import ok, but my new camera's do not. new camera is a Akaso V50x. would love to be able to use the features of the camera and the features of the software.

@Terry-Schmidt

Terry, as Gid suggested earlier, could you please post a short clip from the Akaso onto Google Drive (or another hosting service) and share it with us. Having an actual sample helps troubleshooting greatly.

The reason we suggest a remote hosting is to ensure the original file is not re-encoded, as would happen if you posted straight onto the forum.

Pipe up if you need assistance with Google Drive.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

Hi

Gid - thanks for the file.

The issue with the audio is that it is not 2 channel (stereo, L R) as MediaInfo info indicates, Handbrake picked up the correct format..

The audio is mono and single channel - Centre, the file header is saying it is stereo, 2 channel L R, which is what the video editors are trying to import and there are no L R channels - so no audio

Putting the video through Handbrake using the following settings gets the audio data in the file header correct and imports into MMS 2023 with sound.

MediaInfo and MMS then read and import the audio correctly.

I have also posted this info on the 2 YT channels Ray linked to.

AVIDemux will also produce a useable file by changing the audio output to LAV AAC. It produces a mono audio track.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

I don't know much about audio so I'll leave it up to you,

Vegas shows two channels, I guess it's being deceived somehow

& in Sound Forge the sound is there but really quite & i think distorted like a quiet croaky duck

HI

. . . . Vegas shows two channels, I guess it's being deceived somehow . . . .

IIRC by default Vegas imports mono 'Centre' audio to both L + R channels so it is centred on the sound stage.

. . . . Sound Forge the sound is there but really quite & i think distorted like a quiet croaky duck . . . .

Same in my older SFS. If you expand the track height to maximum and zoom in you should see both 'channels' are identical

In my older SFS the video imports and displays as mono - both Handbrake and Avidemux detect the audio as mono - whereas a true stereo video imports showing both channels, another clue is that the Peak Left and Right values, in the Akaso video clip, are identical, this would be very rare in true stereo audio.

@johnebaker Yeah this Akaso V50X file is just weird tho,

& it's weird what you say about "Vegas imports mono 'Centre' audio to both L + R channels so it is centred on the sound stage",

This is a screen capture, Handbrake says it's only got one channel, that doesn't surprise me,

On the timeline on the left it has auto created 2 identical looking channels, I rendered that out with Handbrake as Mono, it imported into Vegas showing just the one channel. (event on the right of the timeline)

Handbrake rendered mono clip that's on the right showing just one channel in MediaInfo. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Gid

. . . . Handbrake rendered mono clip that's on the right showing just one channel in MediaInfo. . . . .

That is correct, however if you look at the Channel layout it is in C = centre, the original clip is being identified as stereo with L and R channels.

The channel designations for Mono audio to be stored in are:

  • Centre channel
  • Left channel - this is where mono mics usually end up when recording
  • Right channel - rare
  • Both L & R channels - depends on, for example, the mic wiring and/or the recording software/hardware.

Stereo should only be stored in the L & R channels only, and this is where the issue arises with the misidentification of which channel the audio is stored in, in the original clip it is in C meaning L & R are empty.

Hi

You must be on Handbrake v1.6.1, I am on 1.5.1 - now which do we believe.

Loading the video clip into Resolve also has no audio.
