Hi

. . . . seems to have started this week since codec change or maybe just a coincidence . . . .

I assume you mean since you changed to the MainConcept mp4 encoder - this is why you are seeing a difference.

The reason for the poor quality using the settings shown in your first image here is because the bitrate is too low for h.264 1920 x 1080 59.97 fps - the value shown above is 6000 kb/s - the 'standard' bitrate for this resolution and framerate in h.264 is 28000 kb/s.

I presume you are adjusting the bitrate to match of the imported video - this is not correct as you are going from h.265 to h.264 encoding.

The incoming video is h.265 and has a lower bitrate because the HEVC encoder is capable of giving higher compression and lower bitrate while maintaining the same quality as h.264 at 28000 kb/s.

Personally I would not use the MainConcept encoder - I find it is not as good as the Intel encoder - Default in the Import/Export tab.

Hi

Speed settings - ensure you have the Interpolate intermediate images turned on - this will give a smoother playback.

I would also advise you add a small amount of sharpening, Effects, Movie effects, Sharpness tab to the whole move just before export - I use a value of 30.

Hi many thanks. As for bit rate changing i have no idea about that and never changed, it was just set like that and I wouldn’t know if it was correct or not. I assumed that when i choose resolution that all other settings were set automatically. However all points noted and now i will try default and not codec as you suggest. I will also match all cubes recommended settings. Only thing i cant see is the interpolate settings. Could you screen shot where that is and will check. Many thanks

Hi Steve.

You are using the main concept codec which I have personally given up on although that is personal preference as I know others here use and prefer it. However, the video bit rate settings you have are way too low in my opinion for a quality output (Third image from left) .

Look at the bit rate settings on mine (Fifth image on the second row) . I think that is your main problem and would certainly be responsible for the output you are seeing.

Unlike John I find no need to add sharpening for exporting. I find it just increases noise from smaller sensors.

Again, just a preference.

OK, Guys here is finished product. If you see how I can improve on with better settings I am all ears.(screen clips attached for settings) and Link below for movie. I have taken note of previous comments in regards to trees and possible focus issues so i can, in future enable focus lock in these conditions.

I have now created and User defined setting named Mavic Air 2 4k60fps Exported 1920x1080 so can simply click and all settings done. This is what I needed.

Just one point really if you watch the movie. Approx 13 seconds in I am flying away slowly and there is a slight stutter. However point to note here clip was actually filmed flying forwards and clip is reversed played. For flying drones this is best way to fly forward and reverse clip as no one wants to risk flying backwards and crashing.(So if you ever see drone clips with superb backwards flying this is what they do) Therefore how could I improve this for clips in reverse play as will be used a lot.

Also just to clarify Interpolate intermediate images ticked, no point doing on clips not altered for speed or reverse play.

All your help is very much appreciated so big thanks to all for extensive and reliable help.

Hi Steve.

Interpolating in video produces additional frames between existing frames in video when you use the speed change to slow down motion. It looks behind a given frame and ahead of one and produces something that is a cross between the images. I'm not sure it needs to be ticked when speeding up motion as frames will be dropped instead, but may still be replaced by an image generated to represent the sum of more frames hopefully reducing any jumping effect that could happen from dropping frames. The former I'm sure about whereas the latter I'm not overly confident about my reasoning as I can't find backup evidence for but would make some sort of sense.

Interpolation of video clips not altered in speed should not be needed for normal export. It is one more reason for consistency of frame rates throughout a project of both video clips in use within the project and the chose frame speed for the export.

Ray.

Just seen your last reply as it came in as I was typing my last reply.

I personally would not tick interpolation for reversing a clip as there is no speed change for the reasons I mentioned above. I have also reversed clips from time to time and do not tick that box for those clips.

Have just looked at your video.

Definite improvement but the re-speeding of your clips is not doing the footage justice. You may have to buy a dedicated third party plugin to do the job better such as Pro-Dad Re-Speeder. But first consider upgrading your hardware as that plugin will struggle even more than MEP.

You may find using Pro-Dad Re-speeder will slow down your export longer and playback may need to be re-rendered after application to get it to play back smoothly on your machine. Glad you got the free version. Not sure if it is a cut down version or not as I don't have it any more. I think when I upgraded last I lost it somehow. It was definitely better than the MEP inbuilt one but may need to be done outside of the program.

Hi

There is still an issue with the preset you have created - the average and Maximum bitrate should be appropriate for the resolution you are exporting to not the source video.

The Average Bitrate to 80000 kb/s and Maximum Bitrate to 120000 kb/s are moreappropriate for 4K video. f

For FullHD - 1920 x 1080 at 59.97 fps, the rates are just over 3x the 'standard' for this resolution/framerate and is creating a file that is much larger than need be.

MEP already has a standard MP4 h.264 setting with the appropriate bitrates set for 1920 x 1080 59.97 fps - it is the one I posted here. and shown below

Well this export did not come out too well, think will stick too higher bit rate settings and deal with file size. So one last thing, for my set up pc etc... if i film in 1080 60fps then all should be fine and no issues??

@Steve-McClelland

Hi Steve.

That is why I stick to using the higher bit rate settings.

John's camera does not have as high a bit rate when recording as the DJI cameras do. It may also be why he finds sharpening beneficial whereas I don't. You may even find a setting better than the one I suggested as your camera has an additional 20Mb/s more than mine. I have always been pleased with my results but I tend to do the slow-mo stuff in camera rather than after.

My example of slow motion use.

Ray.

As for your PC, that's personal choice and depends on what you want out of editing and viewer experience. A lot of my early videos were 1080p but now I tend to upload them at 4K for future proofing.
