While we're on the topic of problems, here are some additional ones to consider for the Edit Trimmer in addition to the one that I already indicated. I can do up a video on these. The image below shows the numbering as per the manual and I have added some numbers where necessary.

21. Edit Trimmer - additional bugs:

  1. Problem with #1: left arrow when using Ctrl+Alt to move 5 frames at a time - the transition moves as the clip gets longer, but the audio part stays and everything goes out of sync.
  2. Under #7: the right arrow moves the clip to the left opening up a gap to the next object. Should the objects not all move to the left as well? (Note that there was a correction done recently for the left arrow so that all objects to the right and below moved.) EDIT: This happens when using Ctrl+Alt to move 5 frames at a time. It was difficult for me to confirm with single click on the arrow as it usually sticks (but not always) after 1 frame, if that. Once the gap has opened up, clicking on the right arrow extends the right object and pushes the other objects over, but Ctrl+Alt does not - it closes the gap and then creates an overlap. So single click and Ctrl+Alt click have different results.
  3. #6 and the fast forward buttons at the bottom, middle right (#15), moving the range start in the timeline shows what is happening in the transition when something other than crossfade has been selected. With crossfade it only shows the left object and then jumps to the right object as soon as the marker is moved to the start of the transition, and only shows the right object images, no transition.
  4. Sometimes the range is incorrectly shown and starts with the beginning of the left object and goes to the correct location just after the transition. If the Edit Trimmer is activated where there is no transition, it shows a short transition range. Using the bottom arrow with scissors goes to the next interface which is a transition, and shows the same range length instead of the correct range length for the actual transition.
  5. #15: Clicking on the ff/rewind buttons moves the transition zone itself in the timeline, along with the playback marker. Clicking on either of the leftmost 2 buttons to view the range, moves it back to the correct location. Subsequently pressing on the ff/rewind buttons moves the playback marker but not the range. Something is wrong here. Further playing around and the ff/rewind buttons changed the images but did not move the playback marker (or the range) anymore. These buttons need review and correction.
  6. Errors in the manuals about the Edit Trimmer (pdf and chm):
    • In VPX and MEP, right-click on a video clip shows the "Edit Trimmer," whereas the manual calls it a "Cut Trimmer." The manuals should be corrected to "Edit Trimmer."
See page 112 in the pdf file.
    • The shortcut for moving 5 frames at a time is Ctrl+Alt+click on the arrow. The manual states on page 110 "With the Ctrl key you can increase the frame rate gradually to 5 frames per mouse-click." The Ctrl key does nothing when held down and the left or right arrow clicked, and there is no increasing the frame rate gradually to 5 frames per mouse-click. It goes immediately to 5 frames per mouse click with Ctrl+Alt.

EDIT: I did some tests with the latest MEP and things were much worse. Someone who can understand what each arrow/parameter is supposed to do should do a thorough review, including going into the Trimmer (both trimmers, actually) from different clips, and trying both the arrows and the 5 frames at a time and watching carefully what happens, including what happens to objects on other tracks.

I am trying to do a tutorial on the Edit Trimmer, and it is very difficult when there are many things that don't work as they are supposed to.

Hi,

Here is another problem. I think that this has been mentioned in the past.

EDIT

22. Object Properties - Change colour of All selected clips does not work. Only the one right-clicked on changes colour.

Could someone please confirm this. Confirmed by John EB.

Confirmed sort of - it is not the first one that changes - it is the one that is right clicked on to get to properties that changes.

Hi Mathias,

We haven't had any confirmation from you or questions about the problems raised. Are there any questions? What is the status of the next patch?

There are a few problems, like not being able to use takes and black screen caused by either or both or some of the New Blue and Hit Film plugins, along with a major slowdown in exporting when using some. These should get priority.

Here is a link to a video showing miscellaneous problems with the Edit Trimmer referred to in my problems 15 and 21.

I just went through the similar thread on the German forum. There appear to be more problems. Has anyone tested, through to export: 1. Making a panorama, and 2. Using the mirror commands under rotation?

Mathias indicated on the German forum that there is a very good beta testing team. If so, how come there have been so many problems, some that are quite basic like the startup menu, and so many problems that have been around for a long time?

I had mentioned that it was strange there are differing problems in different parts of the world.
I have tested the mirror effect and seems to be working for me.
I generally don't have much use for this unless I want to mirror a photo.
All the export functions I am using seem to be ok like wmv, mxv, wave and mp3 although sometimes an export will stop at a random point and freeze everything but that has only been on one particular project I was working on. I don't use panorama so I don't know about that one.
The program is working the best it has for a long time. I hope it stays that way.
There will always be bugs because there is simply too much within the program and everyone uses it differently.
I have been playing around with a couple of other programs like Premier and Final cut and they do my head in with all the hidden areas and tiny buttons to find and they don't even accept some of the basic video formats without converting first.
I'll stay where I am.
Doug.

@johnebaker

I should have noted more carefully the problems mentioned on the German site. I did some tests with rotation, PiP rotation on photo and video, a few different ways, exports were all correct. I did one panorama. VPX made one out of 2 of the 3 photos, the first one being a too difficult, I presume as the overlapping part was much darker and the entire photo was a little too high. So, I didn't find any problem. Maybe I should have tried with more photos.

This thread has been moved out of the sticky area, as has the one in German, so I presume that a new patch is imminent. It would be nice to get some feedback from Mathias, particularly on the bugs that I mentioned for which I could add illustrations/videos, in case they need help understanding the problems.

@DugsBugs

Glad to see that you're not going anywhere. The program works well, but it would be nice to have most of the bugs resolved, especially ones that cause major problems with exporting. It should not be taking 1h40m to export a 5 or 6 second video, but that was a special case that most users would probably not encounter.

I have trouble with wmv files produced by Vasco da Gama running extremely slow in VPX; playback is terrible. They were produced at the same size and framerate as the project. My workaround is to export to mxv and use that. I presume that you had a similar problem with wmv files that you made. Magix should look into this.

Hi John CB
I did play around with MXV for a short time but there wasn't a lot of gain in it.
I still have to export to WMV to give to the customer anyway.
I have only had problems with wmv if I add it to the current project. It tends to be choppy to preview.
I found the end file size was huge for MXV. Well over 20 gig for a 40 minute video.
It seemed to be quicker to work with but it was still a 3 part process from edit to export.
Neat video is the thing that slows my export down so I usually set it to work overnight ready for me in the morning.
1h40 for a couple of seconds would drive me batty. I have never had that since about VPX2 or 3 when a basic export would take all night but the computers weren't up to it back then.
I don't expect to hear too much from Mathias because this topic started at "how do you like version 16.0.1.255" and has grown to a major bug finding exercise.
If it makes you feel any better, even the new slideshow maker I am using has freezing and crashing problems all because of a file the program produces that needs to be deleted periodically within the program files because it becomes corrupted. I think it is just software in general.
My photo shop doesn't work like it once did. It won't even let me save a jpg to the main hard drive.
The joys of editing.
Doug.

That's a little unfair. He did say at the start of this topic that the feedback was valuable and to let him know what we are struggling with.

browj2 wrote on 7/20/2018, 12:18 AM

@DugsBugs

Neat Video is one of the main ones that I have to export to mxv and then edit, or it just drags everything down, if it's of any length.

The example of the very lengthy export for a short project that I used is in another thread, and I made the MVP and source available for others to try.

The German forum seemed to be all over the place with their comments. I hope people, including Magix, take my listing in a positive and helpful sense. I don't think that it helps to make unstructured comments without example and illustration. Sometimes it's hard to reproduce a problem without a detailed description. Without a list, one loses track.

Overall, the program works very well for me. Most problems I can work around, but given the price of the program, bugs and other problems, especially those found by the users, should be resolved.

One problem seems to be that each time that there are new features issued, something gets broken, so it's good to catch these and resolve them as quickly as possible. Mathias did us and Magix a favour by starting these threads. I hope he keeps it up.

As for other programs, I just struggled with the latest version of Vasco da Gama (11.11). A problem that was in the early patches had been corrected (I gave MotionStudios a detailed video of the problems), but the problems seem to be back, and worse, in the latest patch.

Programs get so complicated that it is almost impossible to check everything with each patch to make sure that nothing was broken. Magix is not alone. I find that they usually sort out main problems quickly, as they did in the first go-round here.

On top of it all we, and software developers, have to contend with changes to Windows. I finally gave in and updated to 1803 yesterday.

Back to editing.

I didn't have a choice with the 1803, it happened without me knowing.
There has been another 2 updates to the 1803 since the original one in April but I don't think they are causing too many problems. We can't stay back with the old versions forever otherwise we would all be using XP or windows 7 still.

Hi guys

Just on the Windows thing I read a comment in the German forum where they reported that a post 1803 patch KBxxxxxxx seemed to have speeded up things in VPX (or MEP?). I thought it may have been coincidental but who knows?

The latest VPX has had some changes under the hood, like the reduced aliasing in 4k preview or export, plus the AVX performance optimisations, that may represent some challenges for hardware and OS - I mean - it is strange that in these updates some have trouble with certain features and others not - like the guys reporting poorer performance with VPX10.

According to Intel the use of AVX can lead to a performance boost in the calculations, but there is a catch, use of AVX does also mean an increase of the voltage to the processor which in turn heats up the processor which in turn will throttle down the processor frequency (all according to intel). I suppose if you have a system with poor or standard cooling, then your video performance may drastically drop when AVX is used constantly. I also assume this especially so in laptops with their less than optimal cooling. So AVX = performance boost and performance drop at the same time (if the processor core frequencies drop), so in the end, will there be a gain or a loss, I do not know...

I am testing Video Pro X for the first day. My forst impression: It never will replaces Vegas Pro 15.
I created a sequence, put a photo object. I was trying to put 3 effects LEVELS, one for each color, RED, GREEN and BLUE. To my horror, the program only agrees to put LEVELS only once. In other programs, such as Vegas PRO, I can put the LEVELS effect as many times on the same object as I want. I had a terrible first impression of the software.!
I also tried to create a new sequence (called MOVIE in Video Pro X) and tried to drag-and-drop the first sequence in this new one. The program did not accept it. I think the best thing I can do is uninstall and quit forever, and go back to Vegas Pro, full of regret, and with the tail between my legs.

Hi John,

I can't reproduce this. I tried a couple of ways.

@VagnerJanuario-deSouza

Hi,

I'm surprised that you would be trying to go from Vegas to VPX. Vegas does have more features, and it's quite different from VPX. Editing in VPX and MEP is straight-forward; Vegas seems very strange, convoluted to me, having to create layers or special tracks. Anyone trying to change from one to the other will have a steep learning curve.

For the nested sequences, if you installed the trial version or even the paid version and did not update right away, then nested sequences doesn't work. See my list of bugs. It was quickly resolved by the update. If you did have the latest patch, then please describe in detail what you did.

For colour correction, I'm not sure what you were trying to do. Were you using the curves under Brightness/Contrast, under Color, or under Color correction?

You can independently set the curves under Brightness/Contrast for each of the RGB colours.

One thing that you cannot do is have the same effect multiple times on the same object. I don't know why anyone would want this. Another thing that has been asked for multiple times, is the ability to rearrange the order of effects.

One thing that you can do in VPX, that I don't think is available in Vegas yet, is to copy only selected effects from one object ("event" in Vegasese) and paste on another object or multiple objects. Perhaps you could confirm this.

You can also save the effect as LUT. Then you put it on the clip, change what you want again, export again to the LUT, and endlessly. And what ? Where this Magix has limitations ;) There is no: P

For the nested sequences, if you installed the trial version or even the paid version and did not update right away, then nested sequences doesn't work.

Just a note on that - be aware that the Trial version is always an unpatched version for some strange reason, but the patches will work on the trial.

I believe @VagnerJanuario-deSouza is using the "Levels" effect adjustment in the Effects pool John CB.

Good tip there from @Michal-MST, plus Magix say that a LUT uses far less computing resources that the combined single effects when applied.

Browj2, you wrote
"For the nested sequences, if you installed the trial version or even the paid version and did not update right away, then nested sequences doesn't work. See my list of bugs. It was quickly resolved by the update."

I just consider it stupid to launch a program without fixing known bugs. It would be much better to resolve the bugs before releasing the trial file. This disregard of MAGIX for the user has made me return to Vegas Pro. Ah! Vegas Pro can selectively do copy / paste effects. And using multiple instances of the same plugin on the same object is possible in Vegas, and I can put the sequence of plugins on the same object in whatever order I want.
I hope that MAGIX does not leave Vegas, recently acquired from Sony.

We have released a new patch: Version 16.0.1.268

This is why I would like to continue the discussion in the new thread I created: https://www.magix.info/us/forum/feedback-how-do-you-like-version-16-0-1-268--1208859/

I know I have been tagged several times and I will try get back to you. Honestly, I don't have the time to answer everything. But I will make sure that your feedback is always forwarded to the Video Pro X team.

Thank you all – we appreciate every comment.
