Audio Issue-MTS Files

Hi

This from the german forum member who quotes Magix support below:-

Please try the following:

1. Start the program and create an empty project. There you import any video or photo file
2. Click "File> Export Movie> Video as MPEG Video ..." (NOT MPEG4!)
3. Select preset "Standard PAL AC3" and start export
4. Now you should see a message to download an extension package. Download this

The problem should then be resolved.

I am not sure but there may be a different result if you import an Mpeg file with a 5.1 DD soundtrack due to the stereo mixdown that occurs on import, depending on your response to the continue / ignore prompt that appears at that point. Not that it should make a difference as the codec download dialogue is in response to the AC-3 encoder being called for the export part.

@Michal-MST

The video solution worked for me.
I actually tried a restore point to roll back the windows update but that didn't work.
I was panicking because I have 2 sony and 2 Canon cameras with no audio and the video solution worked.
Thank you so much micha-misterski

Hi

This from the german forum member who quotes Magix support below:-

Thanks for looking out for the solution in the German forum.

This is exactly what MagiX support asked me to do, but it did not work.

They sent me something on friday, I will try them if I have time this weekend.

Jumping in here with the same problem. I'm assuming it was the windows update as well. I have MEP Plus 2017. I haven't used it since April and had a nasty "wake-up call" today when I put in our latest concert videos ***(in M2TS Format BTW)*** and got no sound. Interestingly an attempt to show the wave-form of the audio in case it helped resulted only in a flatline. I thought it was the camera, but then I found that a m2ts video I'd used in April didn't work either. So I re-installed MEP Plus 2017 completely and . . .nada.

Then I threw in a MP4 YouTube clip just to see what happened and THAT worked. Unfortunately, converting the files to MP4 gives really lousy quality. So here I am on the Magix site. First I looked to see if here was some kind of update, which there was, and my PC is downloading it (all 850 MBs or so) right now.

Now I'm here at the forum. Rats! I could have saved myself that fat download if I'd come here first. As soon as it's finished, I'll try the solutions suggested here.

siegbrunn wrote on 5/21/2018, 1:03 PM

OK. Finally got to the point where I could try this. Loaded a 3 minute M2TS video that I had used before in MEP Plus (interestingly again, this time the Audio Wave WAS visible.

I followed the instructions above from

Scenestealer  (5/12/2018, 1:39 PM )

"Please try the following:

I did get the window saying it had to download something, I said OK, there was a moving bar to show the download and that was it. Further attempt to export just brought the same window. What on earth do I do now?

@siegbrunn
Hi.
Did you try the post by micha-misterski using the YouTube solution.
It is a bit hard to follow because there is no narration in the video.
I exported as AVCHD and changed the audio setting to surround as shown in thee video.
It told me to download the package, I did that and problem was resolved without even knowing it.
I loaded one of my MTS files and audio was back.
Doug.

Hi @siegbrunn

Different people get different results and as I mentioned earlier, it may have something to do with the Stereo versus Surround and the continue/ignore selection in the export.

Further - a couple more possibilities to get the expansion package installed from the German members is to:-

  1. Restart the computer after.
  2. Run MEP with Rt. click>"Run as Administrator"

I too think it has something to do with Stereo vs Surround settings. Mine do not have the Surround settings and my mpeg playback is still silent. There is no Surround select on my Advanced settings, how did you guys get it ?

This is how mine looked like....

The short term solution until you get it sorted is to convert the footage to MP4 in Movie Maker and then import that into VPX. It's double handling but it works and Movie Maker converts faster than Magix.
It will get you editing again until the problem is sorted.
As mentioned, I also did a restore point to before the Windows update. Worth a try.

I did try converting to MP4, but the quality of the videos was absolutely dreadful. It looked like a YouTube video that had been re-copied 20 times or so in different formats. I used Any Video Converter for, but I saw no quality settings.
I also have Handbrake, but have used it only to make clips for posting in YouTube smaller. Any advice on how to get a better conversion? Or another format that looks better that MEP+ will accept?
I'll try the new start and the Admin program start as well.

DugsBugs wrote on 5/22/2018, 2:12 AM

Use Movie Maker and choose Save Movie for HD Display. The quality is great.

siegbrunn wrote on 5/22/2018, 3:49 AM

Thanks, DugsBugs. I haven't used MMaker for 15 years and frankly I was a bit afraid it would be a waste of time or that it wouldn't accept m2ts. But nothing else is working so. . .. BTW, just restarted and will try first to start MEP as Admin. Maybe I'll get lucky :).

The video solution definitely worked for me and like everyone else I was panicking. Good luck.

wongck wrote on 5/22/2018, 4:11 AM

The temporary work around would be to rollback to Windows 1709. Windows 10 stores the previous version for 30 days before removing it completely. So you have a chance to revert back.
After the rollback, when you shutdown, you choose "shutdown" ... and not choose "shutdown & patch". So you can use previous version of Windows 10 until a solution is found for those having issues like me.

But unfortunately for me, I cannot revert back as MagiX Support is asking me to test out some solutions.

@siegbrunn

The issue you are having sounds like, pun intended, a similar issue that occurred when Windows 10 was first released.

Try updating your sound card drivers to the latest version, ensuring you get the drivers from the audio chipset manufacturer, if on board, or if you have a third party audio card from the manufacturer.

Magix has said that it's the latest Win 10 update that has messed everything up and they are working on it. Some have been able to solve it with a downloadable extension package that you get when you try to export a film. (see various descriptions above in this thread) I tried that but after the download offer it appeared to be downloaded and then nothing happens - even with a restart.
I am now struggling with Win Movie Maker. to fill the gap till Magix figures this out. What is the highest quality video I can use with WinMM? It doesn't seem to accept M2TS files, and the MP4 conversions I made of the files yesterday were just awful - had to toss them. What's best? Avi? wmv? etc etc??

Hi

. . . . . Magix has said that it's the latest Win 10 update that has messed everything up and they are working on it . . . . .

That is good to know, however, AFAICS, there was no previous mention until now that Magix have confirmed it is an issue with the Windows 10 April 2018 update.

. . . . What's best? Avi? wmv? etc etc?? . . . .

The supported HD/Full HD formats for import are MPEG 2, MP4 and MOV, however for MPEG 2 and MP4 the appropriate codecs must be installed on the PC, if they are not installed play one of the formats with WMP and the codecs should be downloaded and installed WMM should then be able to then use these, for MOV you need Quicktime installed.

It is not recommended to install any all-in-one codec pack, these can cause issues with VPX and MEP.

. . . . I used Any Video Converter for, but I saw no quality settings. . . . .

The quality ie bitrate settings are under the Video option bottom right of the interface, try setting the bitrate to 6000 or higher for mp4, alternatively AVI will give good quality conversion however the file sizes can be enormous.

I converted my MTS files to MP4 using Aimersoft's Video Converter Ultimate. In the settings menu, you need to configure the frame-rate of the export file to match the MTS file and also make sure you set the bit rate high enough otherwise you will lose quality. So far, so good for editing new stuff, but the conversion has added a considerable amount of time to my workstream processes. Also this doesn't solve the problem of some "in-flight" projects as the sound is lost on those. It would take me days to recreate the same edited content starting from newly converted MP4s, so I am still searching for another solution.

Thank you Thank you johnebaker! That information is VERY useful for me. I've been looking for this answer for a while now. In the meantime I've really just been wasting time diddling around with formats I really don't understand. I'm copying you post and saving it to check every time I need to convert stuff. (I'm too old to memorize all this any more.) ☺️

And ArnieB, I feel for you for your running projects. I am so fortunate that the current project wasn't already started on MEP+. I would have thrown the computer out the window from frustration. (Alrthough we live on ground level with grass outside and probably the PC would have survived. I then would have had to kick it to death and send the pieces to Magix - - - - or Microsoft)

Hi John EB

. . . . Magix has said that it's the latest Win 10 update that has messed everything up and they are working on it . . . . .

That is good to know, however, AFAICS, there was no previous mention until now that Magix have confirmed it is an issue with the Windows 10 April 2018 update.

It has been confirmed that the problem is triggered by the Win10 update but I think the problem is with how Magix access the codec / license from within their programs. The fact that the Trial versions can no longer access the codec at all seems to indicate that the Trials had access to the codec via Windows without the licensing hooha and this has changed in Windows. It should work (and has for many) in the purchased program via the activation process described in this thread.

For those having trouble it may be worth checking in "Help > About MEP" that they have not ended up with a Trial version with something like "0 days remaining" in the window in Help>About. This has occurred previously when people have reinstalled from full programs.

@ArnieB

Also this doesn't solve the problem of some "in-flight" projects as the sound is lost on those.

Just a thought and it may not work but I am wondering if you created "proxies" in your running project, which automatically replaces the AC3 sound file in the timeline with a .WAV, whether this would make the sound audible and allow export with some other format like MP4 with AAC sound. Probably not though because the conversion to WAV for the proxy creation would probably need the AC3 codec. Easy enough to try though - just start a new project and select "Create Proxies" and import a single .MTS clip. I can not try this because I have delayed the 1803 update because of the sound problems and like you I have running projects.

I do not understand why it takes them 2 weeks to confirm that it is due to Windows 1803 update. I already told them that I can get back audio when I roll back to Windows 1709. When I do the update again to Windows 1803, mpeg playback is silent again.

Anyway I figure that it is using Windows Audio codecs because after I removed Windows Media Player from my system, I do not have AC3 capability anymore in my Advanced Encoding screen. After re-installing Windows Media Player I get back the AC3 option. I removed and reinstalled Windows Media Player in hope that it resolves the silent mpeg playback... it did not.

I will try the proxies, may be I can still use MEP for editing.

One thing is clear that I cannot encode any video now as the output video is soundless.

I am sure MagiX is working on a solution.

I guess the key to all this debacle is to turn off automatic updates for Windows.
If everything is doing what you need before the update then the old saying "If it's not broken then don't fix it"
I have rolled back to previous version and disabled updates. Generally updates don't have any improvement on how my computer works.
Unfortunately we are forced to do the Magix updates in the hope that things that worked well before don't stop working after an update.
I have all my audio back but I don't know if it was the roll back or the AVCHD solution in the forum that fixed it. Maybe both.
Doug.
