What Apple format: Apple ProRes or HEVC codecs can Movie Studio run?

Tusk wrote on 11/9/2024, 3:03 PM

Hi, I just bought a iPhone 16 Pro for the explicit reason it seems to take much better concert videos than the pre 1phone 15 pro iterations. I've seen some examples of videos taken in 4k 120 which are impressive. Also because Apple has been forced to use USB C jack for charging/data, it's apparently now possible to save video files directly to exteranl ssd drives instead of relying on the phone memory capacity. This unlocks the ability to record in Apple ProRes that supposedly captures a ton of information for post editing. So I need to know where i can find a list of formats/codecs the Magix Studio, or in my case, Movie Edit Pro Plus, can run.

I've been able to get past some issues of my Magix software not recognising large MP4 files I downloaded from my iPhone previously by running it first through the free DaVinci Resolve. Not optimum, but it works.

So before I invest more into utilizing the expanded capabilities of the new iPhone Pro's in video editing, I'd like to know if my editing software can even run it. Supposedly, I read DaVinci Resolve can run it, but not the 'RAW' version. I have very limited knowledge of codecs and formats, so any info will help before I buy more hardware for my iPhone.

Thanks, Tusk

@Tusk Hi, that's not an easy one to answer, as far as I know the only official list is this one on the Magix website that doesn't really go into details regarding some files like .MOV (ProRes..). There's so many variants of media formats that not all can be listed.

I know my Magix Movie Studio 2025 (renamed from Movie Edit Pro) will play 'most' .MOV but not some, It will play all my MP4 files tho,

I'm pretty sure MP4 ProRes is not a thing so I think either your comment is a bit mixed up or I'm misunderstanding it. I suspect it's more likely that the problems you were having with your MP4's is because they were recorded MP4 HEVC not MP4 AVC, HEVC is a newer version of a compression technique used to reduce the video information taken by the phone camera to fit it on the memory on the phone. A lot of older software will not be able to play those files & in fact some newer programs have only just caught up & are now able to play them, most phones are auto set to record MP4 HEVC but can be changed in the phone settings to record in MP4 AVC which all software will play.

If you want to share a sample file/s that comes straight from your iPhone on Google Drive we'll be happy to try it in the Latest Movie Studio versions.

Or share the MediaInfo of the file/s & well try & replicate them, of course an original file from your phone would be better 👍

The App is called MediaInfo, download it, it's free & a fast download with no added adverts or any of that rubbish. https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo.
After downloading, right click on the media file in your Windows folder, open MediaInfo, choose Text from the options at the top, drag the edges of the window that pops up so it shows all the information & screen capture that page, post that image on here using the arrow button next to the smiley at the top of a new comment 👍

PS. in your Signature it shows your PC/laptop specs but it doesn't mention a graphics card (GPU), do you have a separate GPU?

@Gid the MP4 comment was a different issue, it was an example of how I overcame an issue of the Magix software refusing to load the file. It had uploaded files of the exact same type from the same iphone before and after, so there's something about that file specifically that Magix didn't like.

Last case resort is to run it again through DaVinci Resolve and output the ProRes file as an MP4 to use. It's just that these are usually very large files, so doing it that way doubles the storage I'm using up. I think I've read Magix Vegas runs ProRes, but I can't assume that my Movie Studio will run it.

@Tusk OK. but that info isn't enough..

As I wrote I suspect your MP4 that your were having problems with were MP4 HEVC & 'running it first through the free DaVinci Resolve' you were inadvertently converting them MP4 AVC & so yes they would then work without problems.

I have very limited knowledge of codecs and formats, so any info will help before I buy more hardware for my iPhone.

ProRes is a recording format, MP4 is a container. A container is like a folder that 'contains' information of what format the video was recorded in amongst other information, if you look at my picture that I've duplicated below i've underlined in red .mov prores, but there's other bits i've marked in green that say 422, In other videos I have there's other versions like 420, 444 etc. Some work & some don't, That is why you need to share the MediaInfo or a sample of one of your phone vids.

-------------------

PS.

I think I've read Magix Vegas runs ProRes,

I have the latest Vegas Pro & yes it will play all my .MOV ProRes without any issues & it will also export (render) in MOV ProRes, If you're going to upgrade I would suggest you go down the Vegas route esp if you're using ProRes but that is a different program & there's a separate forum for that. I can play a sample file in Both programs for you but I can't advise about Vegas in this forum.

You can download the trial of Vegas Pro without it affecting your Magix Movie Pro Plus as it is a different program & not related in any way.

@Tusk

Hi

To expand on @Gid's comment:

Movie Edit Pro 2017 will import the following formats available on the iPhone:

  • AVC/h.264 4K UHD - 8 bit only
  • HEVC/h.265 4K UHD - 8 bit only

Note: they are both MP4 files - 'MP4' is a container file format not a video codec standard

Movie Studio 2025 will import:

  • AVC/h.264 4K UHD - 8 bit only
  • HEVC/h.265 4K UHD - 8 bit and 10 bit (HDR) - however:

The Dolby Vision I cannot get to import into MMS 2025, VPX16, even though Quicktime is installed (it is required). It would appear the Windows Quicktime is too old to support this format.

. . . .  examples of videos taken in 4k 120 which are impressive . . . .

While they are impressive, there a some factors to take into account:

  • To view the Dolby Vision recordings (HEVC) in 10 bit HDR correctly, your monitor and other playback device must also be HDR devices and you must be able to export 10 bit video, MMS 2025 does not support this, Video Pro X 16 does.

Added: the playback devices must also support the Dolby Vision format, without this the video is in false colours.

One upside is that 10 bit video, when converted to 8 bit correctly, can look better than when recording in 8 bit.

  • If you are making Blu-Ray discs, they are encoded in AVC/h.264 which does not support HDR (10 bit) video.

  • For concert videos recording at 120 fps is, IMHO, pointless, high framerates such as 120 fps, or more, are beneficial if you are recording scenes with a lot of fast action and close up, eg Grand Prix from close to the trackside, or wanting to slow down the movie for a 'Slo Mo' effect.

Recording at 60 fps will save you having to handle even larger files and ensure a smoother playback on your PC.

With respect to Vegas Pro, it has its own forum for questions and issues regarding the use of Vegas Pro should you decide to go down that route, link is at the bottom of this forums pages.

@Gid I cannot get the Dolby Vision files to load in VP 19 - they are blank and no error messages.

@Bol sigh, another codec issue? It looks like there may be more issues than I had counted on w/ ProRes .MOV format. I'd read that iMovie can run the ProRes files, so another 'last resort' way I could at least use the video, but I just did a few seconds of trial to see what happens w/ the file it produces, nothing good, unfortunately. Not only will the phone's native IMovie app not output the ProRes file to an MP4 (error message pops up), I airdropped the .MOV ProRes file to my other phone to upload to my Google drive to download to my computer to see if I can run it on Davinci Resolve, and even that upload caused an error message.

So my last resort to pull the .MOV from my iPhone will hopefully be the SSD drive I'm ordering. Supposedly, the iPhone camera can record onto the SSD drive, then I can hopefully download the file from that to my PC (fingers crossed).

@johnebaker Agreed, concert footage at 120 is likely not worth it. I saw some really great concert video from iPhone 16 Pro 4k but never asked about what other settings they used, just know it was really clear, an upgrade from my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I have no idea if they recorded using ProRes, it just seemed to be one of the biggest camera upgrades for the newer iPhones, so I thought I might investigate it.

Since I've been getting camera access (last show I even got sound board audio!), I used my iPhones as a '3rd level' back up in case something goes wrong w/ my external mics/stage view cameras. Also, I'm hoping to get to the point of trust w/ the artists, I might be able to put iphones up on the stage, like near a keyboard w/ a mini tripod or something for potentially more dynamic shots. ProRes and the iPhone's cinematic feature are being lauded for the quality, so it's worth seeing if I can

Thanks for the info

@Tusk @johnebaker @Gid @Bol

Hi all.

First.

Can I say that I have had two updates to QuickTime in the last month. They appear to be security updates only. Looking at the Apple security release website it only states 'For the protection of our customers, Apple doesn't disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are generally available'.

Second.

People expect to be able to edit new wrappers and codecs that require a lot of additional computing power due to the amount of additional compression and complexity these codecs produce on older equipment and while it may sometimes be possible, the experience can be far from desirable and often very frustrating as a lot of the performance of a program relies on the hardware to be capable of supporting the editing requirements.

Gid still has one of the most powerful desktops on the forum and he does not typically have the same problems using some codec variations some of the rest of us sometimes come across.

Ray.

@CubeAce I know, I know, I'm constantly chasing the next best thing, on a budget that can't possibly keep up with. I'd upgraded my editing PC and it now can handle editing a 90 minute concerts w/ 4 video media sources, but because I've been getting more reliable access, I'm becoming more adventurous as to the possibilities, looking more at equipment potential rather than doing the best w/ what I could get into the venue.

I've made a decision this year to go to fewer shows, so I'm trying to make the shows I do go to have the best media I can come up with. The iPhones have saved my butt many times for their ability to handle loud concert audio w/ a bit of Magix post editing, THE reason I've stayed w/ Magix is their audio editing flexibility. I'm just hoping the video side of iPhones catch up to their audio. iPhones need to be able to deal w/ fluorescent blues, reds and purples better to make them complete for what I need...

@CubeAce Hi, yes my PC has the specs to power through some material that may bog down other's PC's but if a program has a 'fault' it still shows on my PC, I generally avoid .MOV with MMS, some play/load but stutter when played, some just load a white timeline video object + the audio track.

If I turn on 'Reduce frame rate' the ones that do load ok then play better but they don't seem to be smooth, I'm not 100% sure what exactly 'Reduce frame rate' does apart from what the name implies but we all know what a slowed down clip, a clip with a low frame rate or a 30p file on a 60p project plays like, I think you know what I mean so like I say I jus avoid .MOV in MMS completely. (I have Quicktime Installed, I also have Adobe PP & AE installed, whether that makes any difference reg codecs that have been added at some point I've no idea)

@Gid Yup my iPhone files will at times send my Magix into a weird, spastic save bar when I save a project. I hate to have to rely on anything Apple as I was around when the Macintosh made graphic design a whole lot better, but everything was too 'exclusive' aka expensive, but I cannot argue w/ the iPhone's audio being 'at least' useable, something I couldn't say about any android, windows phones etc I'd used before I finally accepted iPhones. (Talking phones because you can get phones into venues but not cameras). I edit music videos, I can handle less than great video, but for music videos, decent audio is essential...

Unless others on this board have a suggestion for android phones w/ good mics that can handle loud concerts? That's really the only reason I've stuck iPhones, despite all the exclusivity they force on their users...

There's no point in you 'running it first through the free DaVinci Resolve' if you don't entirely know what you're doing, It may not help us help you in the long run but MediaInfo is a good learning tool for you & will help us be a little clearer about your situation. .

@Tusk

Depending on the phone, Android based phones can use external microphones to improve audio quality in video footage. There are various blogs on the subject such as the one here. However, if it's the audio that is the main concern why use the highest quality for the video content? An Android phone will also use H265 for highest quality so that editing problem won't go away except you may not get the quality as you would get in Pro-res.

I do get that people want the best quality they can obtain but that often means having to stay within a given system throughout for reliable results. Especially when using Apple products.

Apple want you to use Apple products throughout your production. It's what they do.

Windows with Android will be as bad with AV1. I can edit video with AV1 but it is a painful experience on my machine that does not have the needed hardware.

Looking at the recompressed video above, that file does not do the video justice.

Ray.

ProRes and ProRes RAW are two different recording formats (codecs).
So you should pay close attention to the settings for ProRes on your iPhone.
For example, not a single Magix software is licensed for Pro Res RAW.
I couldn't convert Pro Res RAW into another format using Handbrake, XMedia Recode or CAPCUT.
No program imported these files.
So pay close attention to which ProRes variant you use.

@johnebaker Hi, I don't know to be honest, that's why I asked for a sample, I know RAW files often need some kind of 'pro' program to use so @Marc-Goder's 'No program imported these files' comment intrigued me. I have other programs that I'd like to try also. 🤷‍♂️ (VP22 is the latest 😉)

PS a quick Google search says -

Apple ProRes RAW is also extremely flexible when it comes to editing choices and is supported in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro, Avid, and Assimilate Scratch, with more manufacturers looking to add capability soon.

It was over a year ago when Avid announced in a press release that it would natively support ProRes RAW. Now, 14 months later, the company has released v2020. 10 of Media Composer which finally supports ProRes RAW for both macOS and Windows.

@johnebaker Looking through the Vegas forum - 'Seems this is ProRes RAW, not yet supported', that was on the 5/2/2023 so I'm guessing it was reg VP21 as there's no mention on the thread what VP version. There was some quite big changes mid way in VP21's updates but I'm guessing from the general comments that ProRes RAW is still not supported. There's mention of an earlier Beta version/codec but apparently Adobe made them remove it, there's also mention of shooting in ProRes 10bit as an alternative, I didn't look deeper into that.

---------

Like I say I'm just curious, we know that some people can load a certain file & some can't, why is the question, different PC setups, GPU & CPU - AMD vs Intel? what other programs & codecs are installed? A little bit like we install Quicktime, we don't use Quicktime directly we install it for the little extras that come with it that allow some file types to be used in other programs, I have Adobe AE & PP installed, they're not licenced anymore but they are still installed.. 🤷‍♂️

Hi Gid

Thanks for the info.

I have installed the Apple Prores RAW codec for Windows, and get the following for the Prores formats:

RAW HQ

  • VP 19 will not import
  • VPX and MMS 2025 will import, ie puts an object on the timeline, however no video/audio
  • QuickTime Player - no video, audio plays
  • VLC will not play

4:4:4 and 4:2:2

  • VP will import with video/sound
  • VPX and MMS 2025 will import, however video only
  • Quicktime player - plays with video and audio
  • VLC plays with video and sound

Interesting that VPX and MMS pick up the codec, at least for the video portion.

Hi everyone,

Just an update from my side.

I completely agree with the answer from @johnebaker which he wrote on: November 11, 2024 at 12:13 PM.

I have converted one of my movie clips to an Apple ProRes Mov file myself. I have QT_Lite_410.exe installed on my computer, which can be downloaded from: QuickTime Lite 4.1.0.0.0 for Windows - Filehippo.com.

With this I can put various ProRes MOV files on the timeline of MMS2025 and Pro X16. Only I have image in the preview screen but no sound, because MMS2025 and Pro X16 do not support the PCM audio codec. I also downloaded the file 4.2K 23.976 ProRes RAW HQ.mov and was able to put it on the timeline, but then I only see white frames on the timeline, but now again no sound.

@johnebaker Hi, thanks for the Apple ProRes RAW codec link, I save my downloads in a folder funny enough called 'Downloads' 😏 & when I downloaded that one it said I already have it, ie it had the ... (1) at the end, so whether I have it already & it's installed I don't know, I installed it again. 👍

@me_again Hi, I did see that when i searched for samples but now you've suggested it I've downloaded it 👍

@Marc-Goder Hi, I'll read through that link 👍

BTW, I've used ProRes, 422 & 444... in Vegas since getting VP18, they play so much better than MP4, mainly in the early version of Vegas where variable footage or HEVC could lag a bit & needed to be converted, the simple answer was to convert to ProRes for a fluid playback performance. Things in VP have improved a lot since then, variable is better & HEVC is not a problem at all. Now I use ProRes .MOV for it's alpha channel, or I use MagicYUV AVI, both create big files but as I mentioned earlier .MOV's don't play well for me in MMS whereas AVI's work without problems.

The 'RAW' part of any format always intrigues me.

I need to restart my PC, I'll get back to you.

I'm not surprised by these results, ProRes RAW downloaded from that link.

VLC Player & MPC Player won't play it.

VP22 loads but no picture.

MMS & VPX14 just a white video object.

Just out of curiousity Boris Mocha Pro & silhouette don't want to play either, Boris have to be friends with Adobe to stay 'pro' & a lot of their tutorials are Adobe AE centred, a lot of their plugins only work 100% in AE. I guess the RAW bit is not required & beyond my comprehension.

Resolve 19 also only shows audio
