VPX/MMS update schedule

Can-Dive wrote on 8/17/2024, 7:53 PM

A question for long term users. I assume new features are introduced in the new annual versions of the program(s) but in the interim, what is the expected update schedule for the software that addresses fixes, bugs etc; quarterly? semiannually?

I've noted in other posts, members indicating that outstanding bugs from previous versions haven't been addressed and still exist in the current version.

@Can-Dive

There's no "schedule" that I am aware of. MEP 2022 (or MMS, can't remember) was a mess when first issued and had 6 updates in the space of 4 months. Then nothing. MMS 2023 had 3 in three months.

I suspect they assign criticality to bugs and fix the worst ones as soon as they can; the rest? Cost-benefit analysis, if you get my drift...

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

@Can-Dive

Hi, a new plugin is added occasionally but new features are very rarely added if ever, in my mind MMS isn't that much different to the old MEP I remember. They change the interface occasionally & move some buttons around to make it look like it's been worked on but I always get the feeling that they interfere with it as little as poss, don't rock the boat type of thing.

Bug fixes is a hard one to answer, like you says there's bugs that are yrs old & when bugs are fixed they seem to introduce other bugs, I'm not the one to ask but I do remember a VPX16 review post where the OP listed bug fixes but the more he looked the more bugs he found.

I'm sure they do do some work on these programs, the biggest change I remember was the added Infusion engine that increased export times dramatically, but I also remember opening the program & apart from the increase in speed the program was pretty much the same as it was & I could just carry as before, basically don't hold your breath waiting.

---------------

PS, in fact if I remember correctly, this has been discussed, there used to be an option to group & resize objects in unison, that option went away. There's so much they could do to these programs but they don't, maybe there's a limitation to the software & they're happy to just let it ride as it is.

VPX 12

Can-Dive wrote on 8/17/2024, 11:53 PM

From my observation as a new user, features from Vegas Pro are being passed down to VPX/MMS (in their recent versions) and I believe the infusion engine is being incorporated into Vegas. This cross-pollination adds value to all products, saves time and entices users to upgrade within their respective software. And herein lies the problem. Time spent on new features leave little time for developers to fix code that need it.

But, I would think transplanting new code/features from Vegas Pro, frees up time for maintenance since the development team is not starting from scratch and the hard lifting has already been done by the Vegas team. I also noticed, based on its release history, that Vegas Pro has about 4 - 5 builds a year so I thought this committed process/time schedule would apply to other Magix products (maybe not as frequent). Hence my original query.

All of these are as they have been for quite a while (I don't know about the 360° stuff, I don't use it)

Hi Gid.

There's been a couple of AI effects added & an old Boris chroma key studio 'effect' but there have been 0 Vegas Pro features added, I'm happy to be corrected on this ...

I think you are correct. The base programming in each editor does not appear to be the same. I'm sure even porting the Infusion Engine III was not that easy to do and relies more on the ability of comparison GPU drivers from AMD, nVidia, and Intel and their hardware acceleration capabilities more than the software programming or else Adobe and others would not have been able to do similar in their editors.

Even between VPX and MMS there are noticeable differences in the way some parts of the program are handled such as VPX getting the better 64 bit audio processing engine while at least in MMS 2024 it is still stuck with a 32 bit processing engine. You can tell if like me you have a lot of third party vst effects and see the different effects that will or will not load into the two programs if you only have a 32 bit or 64 bit version of a particular plugin.

I think the same is true of the OFX based video effects with VPX showing considerable more control options that MMS.

I personally don't think they are bugs but more probably variations in the programs different base programming which would make porting differences between the two platforms considerably more difficult than one would think.

The big drawback for me at least switching back and forth between Vegas and MMS/VPX is the workflow setup. I constantly lose myself in Vegas due to the unfamiliarity of workflow and setup. It is the more professional to my mind due to the increased abilities in control of both plugins and increased variation of file type handling but at the normal cost of with more complexity comes a larger learning curve and more choices that can lead to causing a malfunction along the way. I think that is why on the whole VPX and MMS for the majority of non professional users is more stable with less crashes.

@CubeAce  Hi, I've used Vegas for 4yrs now & find it the other way around, like you say there's a learning curve but there's a few things I'm now used to doing in VP that I get wrong initially when coming back & using MMS, like the track order or being able to click anywhere in the timeline window to position the cursor, there's also a few simple things I can't do in MMS like double click an event/object, transition or drag on the timeline to create a range/region for loop playing etc. Both of these need to be done on the timeline header in MMS.

I only have VPX14 & I rarely use it so it's hard to talk about OFX or plugins in VPX vs MMS, all I can say is that all my plugins work fully in VP.

VP18, 19, 20 & the early 21 version all had crashing problems but since VP21 version (300) & VP22 I honestly can't remember the last time it crashed, seriously on that subject VP is now pretty much solid, for me anyway & I've noticed a distinct drop in the amount of complaints on the forum about crashing.

VP21 version (300-315) & VP22 are a little messed up in parts, some of the new improvements they're doing are a little unfinished but there are boxes that can be ticked to revert those features to the previous build & it's early days so hopefully they'll sort all these things out. VP22 has just come out & the bits that are 'messed up' are mainly 22 related & aren't exactly editing stopping problems, it's things like the new explorer window & the changes in timeline mouse options.

I've always said & still do on the Vegas forum that MMS was good for me as an intro to editing & it's fast export is a good one esp for new users, nobody wants to sit waiting to see how their creation turned out, One thing I learnt was masking, in MMS everything is B/W masks, this helps understand what a mask is actually doing (despite the track order being upside down 😉) simply because you can see it. I bought my mate MMS last yr so he could start making some YT videos.

I'd have to check but I'm fairly sure that the infusion engine is not being added to VP, there may be some collaboration between 'Magix' & Vegas with the rewrite of VP but that's about as far as it goes, I could be completely wrong...

-----------

there's also few simple things I can't do in MMS

I wasn't going to share this but to embellish that comment, I use the large majority of these & yep there's a learning curve but once learnt quite a few actually make 'the workflow setup' more ergonomic.

In no particular order. (Some can be done in MMS but I explain.. )

  • Track compositing (Blend modes & Custom compositing) I know 'compositing' is just layering blah blah😋, this is different.
  • Parent/child of tracks - Trackmotion moving all clips & what gets affected by an effect.
  • Track Grouping & collapsing of groups
  • Reorganising tracks by just dragging the whole track.
  • Built in 3D of tracks
  • The fx chain can have multiples of the same fx & reordering them
  • Scripts
  • Zoom preview window without the need of Ctrl being pressed
  • Plugins / extensions like HOS or Voukoder
  • There's no export with transparency in MMS, not even with a png.
  • limited render/export options in MMS
  • Adjustment tracks
  • Adjustment events
  • Click anywhere in the timeline window to position the play marker,
  • Mouse wheel zooms out & in the timeline positioning the marker central.
  • Double click, events, spaces, transitions to select that region & loop play etc.
  • loop regions, multiple regions can be created, Regions can be 'saved' with markers.
  • Colour grading is limited in MMS
  • Timeline time format, frames, time & frames etc.
  • Import subtitle srt.
  • There's a lot more transition controls
  • A lot of my plugins don't work in MMS, some don't work at all & some only work partially
  • The different ways an fx can be applied, to an event (inc at the MediaFX level), the track, the whole project. Or all options at the same time.
  • Masking in MMs has to be done with a B/W mask or sorts,
  • Greater control of the project settings, colour & pixel aspect
  • Some .MOV files don't play at all or very well in MMS for me.
  • Multiple options for sectioning in VP, I don't like the Section option in MMS, the way it works has been debated on here a few times over the yrs
  • Right click & drag media onto the timeline - Video/Audio only - Add Across Time, Add Across Tracks or Add as Takes, (Media can be added as Takes, each Take can then be chosen at will.), I like HOS when editing an image in an external editor, it auto adds it to the timeline as a Take making it easy to revert to the unedited image if you wish.
  • Drag the ends of events to loop play, no need to duplicate events.
  • On screen stereo audio bus, some of my phone clips had L or R channel damage, I can easily see if this is the case.
  • Nesting, (I know VPX has a version of this.)

@Gid @AAProds @Can-Dive

Hi Gid.

It is interesting to see other people's requirements. Yours seem to be the same as if you worked for a special effects company😂.

Most film and TV production companies would not need most of the problems you listed. Some of your problems with MMS are actually sorted in VPX such as the colour correction tool limitations in MMS or by some of the optional third party effects packages but that increases the work flow which should not be necessary.

One of my main gripes personally is with the text editor. It used to work flawlessly but now getting the outline and 3D sections to work correctly along with the drop shadow is next to impossible but used to work well. It may be why there are some third party effects plugins that can rectify these problems but again increases unnecessary work flow and adds to the computation power needed. I agree about the way the timeline needs to be expanded and how looping modes are handled. Could be quicker and simpler.

Also why is not sound also sped up along with speeding up video content? I think part of the answer to that one is the different frame rates involved between video and sound tracks but should still be possible to do even then correcting for pitch change.

I think you are not completely correct about the track order being 'wrong'. If like me you had come from editing stills using Photoshop the track ordering would be familiar and more intuitive and Adobe were one of the first early adopters of both mediums editing requirements.

@CubeAce Hi,

Yes I do like to play with effects but a lot of those listed come into play with just general editing,

I haven't listed any problems have I? I've listed features that are in most other editors but not MMS. I'd like to know which of that list are available in VPX?

It'd be interesting to see the difference with VPX Colour, you say colour correction & I say colour grading - (in MMS), I assume we're talking about the same thing but also this isn't my forte & we can't really include third party effects because pretty much any of those could be added to either program,

This the Colour Grading I meant. 🤷‍♂️

------------------------------------------

I think you are not completely correct about the track order being 'wrong'. If like me you had come from editing stills using Photoshop the track ordering would be familiar and more intuitive and Adobe were one of the first early adopters of both mediums editing requirements.

I'm not sure I understand that, Is Photoshop different to Gimp? Overlays go on the layer (track) above the base image.

----------------------------------------

Yeah the text editor 3D stuff is a little broken in MMS. Vegas Titles & text is a bit rubbish, there's been many requests for an update, official reply is that there are no plans at the moment because all focus is on the main VP upgrade, at the moment external text editors like Boris's Title studio or NB Titler Pro are needed for fancier stuff.

----------------------------------------

Also why is not sound also sped up along with speeding up video content? I think part of the answer to that one is the different frame rates involved between video and sound tracks but should still be possible to do even then correcting for pitch change.

Are you talking about the MMS Speed effect? That was discussed recently & I saw that it moved just the video & not the audio, it should really work like the Stretch mouse option if the two objects Video & Audio are grouped.

Hi Ray

. . . . main gripes personally is with the text editor . . . .

Outline, Drop Shadow and 3D are working fine in MMS 2025 and VPX 16, I cannot remember any issues with these, this is MEP 2022.

. . . . why is not sound also sped up along with speeding up video content . . . .

There were some Speed bugs which have been fixed - I cannot remember which version, nor find any mention of it in my patch notes, definitely fixed in MMS 2025 and VPX 16.

@Gid

Hi Gid

These are the Colour correction/grading tools in VPX (16), IIRC older versions are the same.

Thanks I'll have a look at VPX14, I'm not one to go too deep into the colour options, I just know there's fewer 'buttons' 😁 I'm sure the options in VPX are more than enough.

I was think of different titles, I do remember the 3D title problems but I didn't open MMS to check, a quick look just now & they seem ok,

Hi John.

I forgot to update my profile to MMS 2024 Suite. I haven't run MEP 2022 for some time now.

Memory of past use of 3D and drop shadow is probably through rose tinted glasses rather than reality which seems to be the same as it always was. The effect for me is not blended enough with too much sharpness to edges. Also the drop shadow never really brings the text away from the background the same way I can do in photo editing.

Hi Ray

I can see the issue you are having - the 3D is not deep enough for the size of the text to be visible, the Drop shadow has to be increased dramatically to compensate for the 3D offsets, it also helps if you differentiate the drop shadow and 3D colours slightly as shown in the example below.

Hi John.

If you look closely to my settings I had changed both border width and colour all be it not as dramatic as your example. My problem with it is it still looks very much 2D slapped onto the foreground no matter the settings. To get what I would prefer I have to make the text in Photoshop and either import it as a PSD file or transparent png file along with the drop shadow.

@Gid my understanding is that a lot of older code in Vegas are being rewritten, including the video engine. The Dev's have posted that this is going to take a bit of time. It won't happen in one shot or even in VP22 by it's end.

It has been stated in the forums that Vegas is the focus on the development team. One of the reasons for the demise of Vegas Movie Studio was so that the dev team could concentrate solely on Vegas Pro. And as new coding is replacing old coding, there is a guarantee of bugs along the way. They are constantly moving forward, and that's a good thing.

I've worked in VP21 B315 and haven't experienced a single crash. Now with VP22 B93, a couple of hiccups that were reported and the error report sent in. But it's working fine for me.

Oh, and as for sharing of "resources" between Vegas and Magix, how about Vegas Stabilizer in MMS 2024 Suite and VPX14? The AI is definitely from Vegas along with the HUB. I "think" that these are modular in nature, so bringing them over isn't like starting from scratch. And I think going forward, that there will be more "cross pollinating" between Vegas and Magix.

@CubeAce Vegas does work like Photoshop and it's layers as @Gid has pointed out. But it's a matter of what "we" consider "intuitive". To each user, "intuitive" is different. My transition to Vegas was from Pinnacle Studio, which edits in the same way as Vegas. It was a matter of learning where everything was located. And yes, the menu system was a little overwhelming at first, but like learning how to edit over 20 decades ago, created a learning curve of "how", it's the same with any software. Try to figure out keyframing in MMS if you've never done it before. But I am flexible and can adapt to upside down, or right side up editing. My preference (because of video nomenclature) is that overlays are just that, laid over a clip, not under it. And since I have several OFX plugins, it' makes Vegas the choice. Maybe VPX will get things going with OFX like they should have a long time ago.

@Can-Dive, to your original question about updates. I would guess if there was a global "showstopper", that would get fixed in a reasonable amount of time. Old bugs the still exist, will probably still exist. Some things can't be fixed without a total rewrite of the code, and that isn't going to happen.

And as you know, I still recommend MMS to those looking to replace Videostudio Pro, and even Pinnacle Studio. The cost of admission is low, and the cost of updating is really low once you are in the "system".

Gid wrote on 8/19/2024, 8:48 AM

@Reyfox Hi, I can't tell if you're questioning my comments or agreeing?

Yep I've mentioned that VP improvements are in their early days & hopefully bugs will be resolved, whether there's a collaboration between 'Magix' & Vegas can only be presumptuous as they're now owned by the same company, but from Vegas posts or should I say the lack of any discussion on that topic is all speculative.

I've worked in VP21 B315 and haven't experienced a single crash. Now with VP22 B93, a couple of hiccups that were reported and the error report sent in. But it's working fine for me.

Yep - 'since VP21 version (300) & VP22 I honestly can't remember the last time it crashed, seriously on that subject VP is now pretty much solid,'

Oh, and as for sharing of "resources" between Vegas and Magix, how about Vegas Stabilizer in MMS 2024 Suite and VPX14?

I mentioned there's a couple of AI effects added (Where did they come from when added to Vegas, are they 'Vegas' effects or were they acquired from somewhere else?) & Boris's keyer, those are ones that come to mind as recent additions but I'm fairly certain that there has been a Vegas stabilizer inc for quite a while.... A quick search - This post from 2019 MEP2020 Effects / Vegas Video Stabilization not working, So why that is relevant I'm not sure in a conversation about updates & new features, not exactly a new feature & the reason I didn't mention it. Apart from that namesake fx that was added 5yrs ago & what is in software terms a long time ago there is 0 evidence to suggest any 'sharing of resources'.

I'd have to check but I'm fairly sure that the infusion engine is not being added to VP, there may be some collaboration between 'Magix' & Vegas with the rewrite of VP but that's about as far as it goes, I could be completely wrong...

I'll repeat I could be completely wrong on whatever collaboration is happing if any.

@Gid it has been a tough day. I have a project that is becoming a "learning" experience. Overcoming some hurdles I've put upon myself. So I misread your comment on the Infusion engine coming to Vegas. I too doubt it, but I am sure that what is being done to the video engine does have the help of those who put together the Infusion 3 engine.

There appears to be sharing of Vegas AI, and the Hub. Where Vegas got them from (AI), I do believe they are inhouse but could be wrong. So maybe the Infusion (or something similar) is a part of the shared resources. Boris FX we know comes from Boris. But you are correct about "new features". AI and Hub are new here. This indicates that there is some sort of "sharing" going on. To what extent, I have zero idea. But with the current state of affairs in Magix, I would suspect "sharing" is going to be happening if it hasn't happened already.

@CubeAce, you wrote in reply to @Gid's long list of what can't be done in MMS,

Most film and TV production companies would not need most of the problems you listed.

I would beg to differ. Film editing is done digitally for the most part. And all that was mentioned are used in conjunction with the editing. All are a part of the professional editing software that is used in film. Even TV isn't chopped together video but require grading and correcting, looping while editing, etc.. These are tools that even I use. Once you get used to having them, it's hard to go back to a time when you didn't have them. The color tools limitations are better in VPX, but certainly not up to what professionals would use. One trip even with Vegas Color Grading panel is enough to show otherwise. Don't bother going to the de facto standard in color correcting/grading, Davinci Resolve's Color page.

Of course, with "more" comes the learning curve. But the Vegas learning curve isn't as steep as it looks. I thought it would be difficult, but it hasn't been.

Hi all.

I've been away camping (boondocking) for the last week with little electricity and intermittent cell phone access and attending and filming a wedding.

@Can-Dive

Currently, the main difference between VPX and Vegas is that Vegas has a team working on it, VPX has...nobody? So, don't expect much in the way of bug fixes. Magix has a team working diligently on Samplitude/Sequoia and probably Music Maker.

I have maintained and shared a bug list on the forum that I have routinely (except for the last year or so) sent to Magix. There are bugs that have been there for a very long time. They range from probably hard to fix to ignorance as to how some features used to work, to stupid.

The interface with Xara still works but has problems that can be worked around. The main problem is that Magix and Xara have divorced. Thus, there will be no fixes for this and Photo Designer (a Xara product) no longer comes with VPX/MMS.

Audio Cleaning Lab, now misnamed Sound Forge Audio Cleaning Lab, was the first Magix program that I used. This is and always has been the upgrade to Music Editor that comes with VPX/MMS. I have purchased most upgrades over the years. The current version doesn't work with VPX/MMS - the wave file doesn't open. On the stupid side, there is an 101 error that most, not all, users have, upon opening SFACL4 and it keeps coming back. Magix should have corrected this but has refused as their audio resources are all working on Samplitude and Music Maker it would seem. This 101 error is an embarrassment or should be to Magix.

There was a time that you could right-click on the audio part of a video clip in VPX/MEP and Edit wave externally would show up. It would do a mixdown of the audio, replacing the audio with a wave file, then open this wave file in ACL for cleaning and mastering. The last version to do this properly was Audio & Music Lab Premium (ACL was split into the full-featured AML and the stunted ACL). Guess what, AML still works even with VPX16, does the mixdown and opens the wave file. So why hasn't Magix fixed SFACL 1 through 4 to work properly? Now, you have to do the mixdown yourself - I did a tutorial on this.

I'm getting away from VPX with SFACL, but I consider it to be representative of the bug-fixing problems at Magix.

More stupid - SFACL1 only had a Stereo selection for recording, no Mono. I raised a ticket. Fixed in SFACL2.

Close to stupid - SFACL4 - the interface with SpectraLayers doesn't work properly. This is a big selling point for SFACL4 and it doesn't work. Do they not at least try playing back to see if it works? Ticket raised twice - no action.

More stupid - and back to VPX and the import screen, you can trim the source clip, and you can import/drag this from the Source monitor to the timeline or to the Project Temp Folder (PTF). @Gid - putting a trimmed clip in the PTF is about the same as what you mentioned about adding as a Take in Vegas. You can then put this on the timeline where and when you want. In VPX 15, this was broken - the trimmed clip would show up in the PTF as 1 second long. However, you could drag or send to the PTF a trimmed clip from the timeline and the duration would be correct. In VPX16, Magix fixed the import trimmed clip to PTF problem, but broke sending a trimmed clip from the timeline to the PTF - it shows the duration correctly, but playing it back or dragging it onto the timeline only gives 1 second. This, I consider to be a stupid bug and should already have been fixed, but no.

On the harder side, I guess that fixing the XY keyframing bug for the HitFilm plugins was too hard.

One of the new features of VPX16 and MMS2025 is the new interface for capture, called MAGIX Capture. It works as a standalone and I would not be surprised to see a variant of this show up with Vegas. Unfortunately, the audio capture is MP3 instead of Wave, and the sample rate is 44kHz instead of 48. There is no button to select Mono instead of Stereo, so those of us with an external interface and a mic plugged in to the left or right channel only, get left or right. The legacy recording parameters have a Stereo/Mono selection. While not bugs, I consider this to be ignorance. Magix should fix this.

For @Gid, nesting. This is very simple to do by just dragging a second movie onto the timeline of another movie. There, you can apply effects to this nested object. However, and this may be a new bug, a week ago I tried this by dragging/nesting 4 movies into a main movie. They were all truncated. Not good. Maybe they were too long. More testing required.

For @Gid, you mentioned that "Masking in MMs has to be done with a B/W mask or sorts." Alpha masking is usually done using B/W with/without gradation, as far as I know, is it not? I can use a colour swatch, say Yellow, and use that as a mask. Actually, I use the white swatch and resize it for masking out small problems (using a corrected image underneath). In VPX you can mask out green, blue or using Hide Color, select a colour from the video/image using the pipette, so no B/W mask required. See also the colour replacement feature indicated below.

Can you elaborate on other ways to apply masks other than what I just indicated.

@Gid has given a pretty good listing of some features of Vegas not available in VPX, however, many are just different ways to do the same thing - like zooming in the Preview monitor, the timeline, playback marker positioning, etc.

BTW, can one zoom out of the preview monitor in Vegas now like in VPX/MMS to see beyond the boundary?

There are a few more that can be added to the Vegas list, like:

  • Editing on the timeline using the Speech to Text feature (or was that the inverse)
  • Mask creation by drawing a mask (only available in VPX using Xara)
  • Better detailed meter in the Mixer.

However, VPX has features not available in Vegas and I won't go into them right now.

Vegas - new features

Note that Vegas 22 now has audio synchronization - has been available in VPX/MMS/MEP for as long as I can remember. From what I see on the Vegas forum, this is a work in progress.

Also, Vegas has just added Beat Detection, a work in progress - also has been available in VPX for a few generations, along with the BPM Wizard that has been there for as long as I remember. Since Vegas has an audio engineer on this, I expect the feature to end up much better than the tools in VPX.

Colour Correction/Colour Grading

The main difference between Vegas and VPX that has been mentioned is Colour Correction/Colour Grading. I just spent a couple of hours going through the documentation (not the manual) about this subject on the Vegas site. I highly recommend that users read these excellent articles. However, the only thing that I found in Vegas that is not in VPX for this is the graph of Hue vs Hue curve.

Maybe I have missed something.

From what I read, in more recent versions of Vegas, the Colour wheels and curves were combined onto 1 screen with tabs for other adjustments for exposure and sliders. In VPX, as @johnebaker has indicated, there is the Color Correction wheels interface with other tools, but there are also Brightness/Contrast with tools for Gamma, HDR Gamma and Gradation Curves (combined and separate RGB curves with Bézier capability). These 3 screens make up what you see in Vegas. There are also Levels and LAB Color tools. The scopes are the same as in Vegas except that there is slightly more detail - in Vegas, the Histogram has Mean and Std Deviation indications, and the Vectorscope has more numbers, but nothing of significance.

@Gid - Note the list of Video Effects in the left column of the above images. There are many more than what you showed from Movie Studio. Just one of the difference between VPX and MMS.

I did not find anything in the Vegas documents and tutorials that I could not do in VPX for Colour Correction/Grading, other than the aforementioned Hue vs Hue curve, which I could replicate with the various tools. Watching the monitors is key when doing this.

The main difference is in the jargon and some translation is necessary.

As best I can figure, first in Vegas then VPX:

  • One wheel controls the darkest parts of the image, the Lift - In VPX- Color Correction/Shadow;
  • One controls the middle part of the image, the Gamma - in VPX- Color Correction/Mid
  • The third controls the brightest parts of the image, the Gain - In VPX- Color Correction/Lights
  • Sometimes there’s a fourth wheel, which controls all areas of the picture at once, usually known as Offset - In VPX- Color/Hue.

There are more, but those are the main points.

One thing in Vegas that I think can be done is multiple plugins of the same thing in the plugin chain. So I would expect that one could do colour grading and then add a second colour grading to the chain.

Other than what I have mentioned, perhaps someone can point out to me what Vegas can do that cannot be done in VPX for Colour Correction/Grading.

I did not notice whether or not the Vegas colour tools could be keyframed. In VPX, the only tools that I could find that could not be keyframed were the Gradation Curves.

For you Vegas users, which colour tools can and cannot be keyframed in Vegas?

As well, I saw a mention in the Vegas documents about colour replacement but didn't find how to do this.

In VPX, Color Correction, you can replace colours by selecting them and then adjusting the wheels. See the result in the video below. No masks were used. This is close to the same as what I showed above under Chromakey, Hide Colour.

New AI features from Vegas - these are OFX plugins, so I would assume that this would be the major way to get effects from Vegas to VPX and vice versa.

@Reyfox - We still don't know the extent of OFX capability/compatibility in VPX, but I believe that you mentioned BCC OFX could not be used with VPX. I have them installed on my Surface Pro and they work fine with VPX16, with a big X as I didn't buy them. Also, in previous versions of VPX, BCC Title Studio was very slow. I tried again with VPX16 and it seems to work much better.

@browj2 I appreciate your honesty with most of this, audio & colour grading are not my forte so I'm not going to get too deep into that but keyframing in the 'Colour Grading panel?' is a good question, I'm not sure if you can but there are many colour fxs that can be keyframed. The Colour Grading panel & these fxs can be applied at the Event, Media & Track level.

-----------------

putting a trimmed clip in the PTF is about the same as what you mentioned about adding as a Take in Vegas. You can then put this on the timeline where and when you want.

That would be a Subclip in Vegas not a Take.

-----------------

Everything you said about masking is as I said 'B/W mask or sorts' & the 'colour swatch' is just Chroma Key - Colour that is shown in your image by 'Transparent' on the object below, Vegas has colour options in the Chroma key too but it also has Bezier masking & the Mask option in Pan/Crop. So my statement is correct, there is no masking option in MMS beyond B/W masks of sorts. I would put your colour swatch version closer to a 'compositing' option rather than a 'masking' option, I know we've discussed compositing before & that it is just layering/overlaying, that's why I've put compositing in quotation marks because with Chroma key you're just removing a certain colour so it overlays the image below .. I wouldn't class cutting out part of an image so you can see part of the image below as a masking effect exactly, I know that it could be argued but as you say -

Mask creation by drawing a mask (only available in VPX using Xara)

------------------

BTW, can one zoom out of the preview monitor in Vegas now like in VPX/MMS to see beyond the boundary?

Yes that has been a feature since VP20.

Concerning “nesting”, you don’t have to drag a movie from another saved movie to do it in Vegas. Maybe there is a different understanding on creating a nested timeline. You can nest the tracks together in your current movie to have “one” track. You don’t have to leave the software. And, you can also drop a .veg file onto the timeline, which would be another project. I think we've discussed this feature before.

Syncing audio has been around for a bit with Vegas. it's not new.

Yes, they've added beat detector. I've been using Vegasaur to do that. Now, it's built in along with Tempo detection and all it's settings.

What I would like to see and have always asked for is the ability to lock a track like in VPX. For whatever reason, it can not be done right now in Vegas. Bummer....

I haven't seen anything like Adjustment Events in VPX. Also, can you add effects to an entire track or am I missing something? I I tried in MMS/VPX, but I must be doing something wrong.

Track motion an entire track in 3D space? Compositing at the track level?

There is more to the Color Panel than what you wrote about. Looking at that article, it is showing Vegas Pro 18 color panel. But the article is a good primer. Bezier masking can be done within the Color Panel. I suggest you download a trial version of VP22 and take a look. Reading about the older color panel is ok, but new features have been added. You can color correct/grade to the event (clip), the entire track, and using Vegas Color, the entire project.

Notice the RL Color Wheels? Range Limited. If you want to understand how important this can be, here is a video explaining it.

And additional color tools.

The tools are fairly extensive and go beyond the Vegas tools already included. It's not that you can not color grade/correct in just about any software, some users require more tools to do it. And then some require Resolve. I'm not one of them. And no, you can not keyframe your color grading in the color panel pictured above. If it can be done, I am not aware of it. But using Vegas Color as @Gid has shown, yes you can. Also, you can, if you decide you like your grading, create a LUT.

One thing I do like about Vegas is that I can have all of my scopes open all the time without that window being shared with the Source (in Vegas, the Trimmer), unless again, I am missing something. I've been known to do that.

The video you shared with the changing color, in Vegas (or any NLE), that would be secondary color correction. .

As for BorisFX Continuum Complete 2024.5 OFX plugins and VPX, since you have them installed (demo mode), I'd like to see BCC+Film Stocks accessed via the FX Editor. You should see this below.

But it's good to hear that Magix is making strides with improving OFX compatibility in VPX. They should. NBFX has removed some of the features in the TotalFX for Magix compatibility (transitions comes to mind). The TotalFX7 (now TotalFX360) works in both Vegas and Resolve fully. The same with BorisFX and Ignite Pro 5 (it's no longer sold/supported).

But one plugin that I have that is extremely important to my workflow is having Smartsound (Sonicfire Pro) available. Yes, there is the HUB and all it's music. But with Smartsound, the ability to customize length, instruments, mood, etc., are important to me. It's not an OFX plugin, so it will not show up in Resolve.

I know with upgraded software sometimes comes bugs that were not a part of a previous version that we have. So waiting for a bug fix can hurt our workflow. With Vegas, I can have every version of the software I've bought (14-22) installed and can work with all of them open, copy/pasting between them I don't worry about upgrading and losing a previous version. Such is the case right now with portrait still images in Vegas 22. It's a "no go". But, they appear as they should in VP21. And even within versions, we have access to all the builds in case an update messes up something. It's in the user forum
