Part of a musical I am developing based on the 1980s Sierra adventure game "King's Quest". A medieval hero has some time alone with his thoughts on a quest to kill the dragon who holds his lady love prisoner. The song ends abruptly as the hero King Graham comes face to face with his foe.
Lyrics, vocals, and arrangement by Ian Michalski.
Lyrics
Up right as the dawn is breaking
On medieval mountains
Fine day for a quest
To rescue yonder damsel
Chained up in the tower
Oh pray be strong
My fragile flower
I speed to your aid
Through forests thick with bramble
Somewhere in the maze of rocks and trees
I see before me
There lives a scaly beast intent to kill me
Tall standing above
the tower with my only love
to strike first with might and sword
oh heaven will me
I must be mad
Off to slay the dragon
Why do I go
Off to slay the dragon
For a girl who I don’t know
Off to slay the dragon
Duty calls me though
Off to slay the dragon
Down into a cave
Where I expect my foe is waiting
Bones lining the walls of heroes gone before me
Two glowing eyes run towards me as they
Pierce the darkness
Is this my finest hour or just a tragic story?
I must be mad
Off to slay the dragon
Why do I go
Off to slay the dragon
For a girl who I don’t know
Off to slay the dragon
Duty calls me though
Off to slay the dragon
