"Afro Blue" is a jazz standard composed by Mongo Santamaría, perhaps best known in its arrangement by John Coltrane.  Afro Blue was the first Jazz standard built upon a typical African 3:2 cross-rhythm, or hemiola.   The song begins with the bass repeatedly playing 6 cross-beats per each measure of 12/8, or 6 cross-beats per 4 main beats—6:4.

Afro Blue: Lyrics by, Oscar Brown, Jr

Dream of a land my soul is from, I hear a hand stroke on the drum.

Shades of delight, Cocoa hue.  Rich as the night, Afro blue.

Elegant boy, Beautiful girl.  Dancing for joy.  Delicate whirl, Shades of delight.
Cocoa hue, Rich as the night. Afro blue.

Two young lovers dance face to face, With undulating grace.  They gently sway, Then slip away
To some secluded place.

Dream of a land my soul is from, I hear a hand stroke on the drum.

Shades of delight, Cocoa hue.  Rich as the night, Afro blue.

Elegant boy, Beautiful girl.  Dancing for joy. Delicate whirl.  Shades of delight, Cocoa hue.  Rich as the night
Afro blue.

Two young lovers dance face to face, With undulating grace.  They gently sway. Then slip away To some secluded place'  Afro blue...  Afro blue...

Very smooth and relaxing.  Hope you enjoy...

Happy New Year!

Hello Griff,

verry smooth song and exactly the sound I like the most. Soft guitar and piano playing. Hmmm... love it.....

The rhythm sounds like a hard nut to crack for every musican. I would not like to play this song live

Happy New Year

Hi Griff:

First let me wish a wonderfull 2014, and if not best, at least so good as i know that it was for you, the last one!

About this work... well i have to tell you that is necessary courage to play a standard  like this... (i believe that in your country you say "you have to got the balls"  )

I think your aproach to the song is very interesting, because you pick a tune of a "mestre conguero" but you left out all the rythm section , and leave the rhythm of the song only to the piano ... that turns the version much more Jazzy and more similar to the Coltrane version.

As a latin, like i am, of course i like the latin flavour of the Mongo version, but of course the Coltrane version is also  magnific and the Drums in there, played by Mongo is speecheless...

Your version was, to me one of the best, if not the best cover that i ever heard in here, not only because like i said before, it requires courage to present a theme like this, but also because you play the piano parts devinely and my only criticism is that is too short... i would like a longer version....

One question.... the guitar is a vst sound?

All the best to you,

Emanuel

Hi Griff,

Cool and smooth as usual. Very interesting to hear different rhythms. Your explanation of the origin of the song and rhythm is very interesting and appreciated, thanks for educating us.

Well done my friend.

Cheers,

Stuart

I'm not a great connoisseur of jazz music, but with time I learned to listen more carefully to try to understand it.
Now even though I did not become a teacher, can I still give my opinion and what better time than this.
I think that in this type of music you are certainly a master, you can clearly hear that you exit the heart and the result is amazing.
Also in this passage seems to me to complete all the basics of composition, I think it's great music.
for you I offer my congratulations, great job

Happy New Year

Hey Griff, normally I rarely hear jazz, but it always fascinates me with all its facets. The song I did not know but I've googled and listened to the version of John Coltrane.
I find that very great what you've done from the song - your own beautiful version that has all my respect - what you can, you can feel it and you live the music. Congratulations and I wish you, the 2014 is a good year for you. Make something of it and stay healthy and get us, so we have even more of this wonderful music ... lg Andi

Hi griff
beautiful, smooth jazz. Exciting rhythm you've chosen and a very nice guitar and piano melody make this piece a pleasure.

I would imagine that gives some percussions the song even more diverse.

Very nice jazz, beautifully arranged.

I like very much.

en liebe gruess und en guete rutsch ins 2014 vom

Hi Griff,

at frist, at happy new year to you and all the best wishes from the continent, your soul is from...

Very intersting rythm! Def. not easy to play this clean, as you did it.

Allthoug jazz is not really my favoured style, I enjoyed to listen to this song. Do you know how many times i have to listen to some african rythm, before I get them??

Hey Griff

WOW!  I remember my piano teacher always making me COUNT out loud and I hated it and I hated the metronome too. I'm curious .....did you count on this song or just let it flow?  I'm guessing the flow.

That was truly amazing.  I always had trouble with Brubeck's "Take Five" but this is WAY more sophisticated

Great job and HaPpY NeW YeAr!
