My projects can take hundreds of gigs of footage. Creating proxy files for all these takes an absurdly long time. I have yet to understand the reason behind it, so can someone explain it to me? Here's my issue:
The main difference between MEP 2014 and 2015 is that 2015 is a 64 bit program, which means it can use more memory and can perform some operations faster than the 32 bit versions.
What I suspect has happened with your computer is that the switch to 64 bit has tipped your computer over the edge with respect to achieving smooth playback when not using proxy files.
Proxy files have two uses -
they give smoother preview playback on lower specification computers when working with HD video
they can be used for export or DVD creation - this gives a signiicant speed increase in rendering the video particularly if the source video is HD.
. . . . preview on effects and fades is difficult . . .
Depending on the fades and effects you have used they may not use hardware acceleration to render them during preview - crossfades, colour fades and some 3D transitions are hardware accelerated, many other effects, eg blinds, are not hardware accelerated.
Hiya John. Thanks for your answer(s) (you seem to answer all my questions). I've contacted support but they haven't provided an answer yet. It seems bizarre to me that the 64bit version doesn't run as smoothly when it has access to much more ram. I've been doing some testing and come to the conclusion that MEP 2015 (without proxy rendering) demands more CPU power than MEP 2014, and more than my pc can provide (SHE'S GIVIN EET ALL SHE'S GOT CAP'N!).
The 64bit takes more ram, but, for playback it only increases from 800-900 (MEP 2014) to 1,300-1,400 (MEP 2015). This is running 4 similtaneous HD (MOV) videos on playback, with proxy rendering off in 2015. (and before you say that no one ever does this this... I do, for multiple reasons, not just because I'm a bit nuts).
In these links, the 2014 version runs perfectly smoothly on playback, whereas the 2015 version immediately lags.
It appears to me that the 64bit MEP 2015 is demanding more CPU and my 3.2Ghz quad, which is getting on now (2011), can't cope. However, if I proxy render the files, the CPU demand is reduced substantially, but the ram is only reduced a bit.
What this tells me is that I will continue to use 2014 version, and maybe upgrade to the 2014 pro version, until I reach the limits of that program, which will force me to the 2015 with proxy rendering... at least until I build a new PC, which is not an option for a good while. Or, I'll just bite the bullet and learn premiere/AE. It's been on my PC for a year now, but Magix has always been so simple and convenient for me.
