Why can't I hear anything?

jacobv wrote on 4/25/2018, 9:46 PM

So I just downloaded the free version of music maker, and when I booted it up and tried to mess with the keyboard, I couldn't hear anything. I tried inserting some samples and seeing if I could hear those, but to no avail either. When I was pressing the keyboard, I think that the app didn't even recognize it or something. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi, welcome to the Magix forums.

We really do need rather more information about your computer; please read this post and give us ALL the detail requested there, including exactly which version of MM you have; look under Help>About.

To help resolve the issue, with MM open on your screen, go to File>Settings>Program Settings (shortcut P) and then the Audio/MIDI tab and check what is shown on the Audio Playback screen; the setting here must match what your computer uses for audio playback. If you're not sure what the setting should be, that's when the info about your computer becomes essential to us, perhaps also a screenshot of that Audio/MIDI tab!

To add something to what Jeff said: We've been getting the problem you described, with first-time Music Maker users not getting any audio output from the application, more frequently ever since we switched to using ASIO drivers by default in the 25.x (a.k.a. 2018) generation of Music Maker. It usually happens when there are multiple audio devices/drivers (e.g. regular sound hardware + USB headset) in your system, and the ASIO driver defaults to the "wrong" option. This usually doesn't mean that you cannot use ASIO drivers on your configuration. You will be able to use ASIO and benefit from the low recording latency times. You just need to enter the "Advanced" configuration option for the generic ASIO driver (via the dialog described above), and make sure to choose the device you actually want to use from the "WDM Device List" in the "MAGIX Low Latency 2016" configuration screen. Usually this should be your on-board sound hardware or audio interface that you actually connected your speakers/headphones to. Outside of that, you also have other drivers types to choose from. (WASAPI also delivers low recording latency time.)

I hope this information helps!

@ralftaro

Hi

A problem that occurs regularly in the forum is the inability to listen to other audio sources while MMM is active and using ASIO to drive the sound card, ie the supplied Magix ASIO or ASIO4All.

A typical example where this is needed is when trying follow a tutorial in a web browser and work in MMM at the same time.

Thanks everyone! I took the advice you gave me about the ASIO and it's fixed now. Thanks again!

Hi John,

I'm afraid that's a general limitation of ASIO drivers, which demand exclusive access to the system's sound hardware resources. Music Maker running on ASIO drivers will cut off access to the sound hardware for other applications using different driver types, like e.g. your web browser playing back a YouTube clip. You can only work around this problem by using Music Maker with a sound driver type that won't cause this problem. Unfortunately, WASAPI seems to behave in much the same manner. So, in such a scenario, you may be relegated to using Wave or DirectSound drivers for playback in Music Maker, at least temporarily. You can still switch to ASIO or WASAPI when actually doing time-critical audio or MIDI recordings.

Cheers!

Hello, it's been multiple years now, is there a proper way to fix this issue? I still have to pick whether I want to hear my MIDI or Spotify. I've used both ASIO and WASAPI, as well as Wave and Direct, Wave and Direct just don't let me hear my MIDI at all, although I can hear spotify again. At this point, I'm stuck using my phone in the background to hear my backing track through Spotify. Not to be rude, but if there still isn't a fix for this, that's just unacceptable.

@Sanchenski

Welcome to the Magix forums.

I copy below, with some bolding for emphasis, the first sentence from @ralftaro's reply earlier in the thread:

I'm afraid that's a general limitation of ASIO drivers, which demand exclusive access to the system's sound hardware resources

There isn't a fix for this and there never will be, until and unless someone creates "ASIO2", which is highly unlikely!

Since any further discussion is really pointless, for the reason quoted above, this thread is now closed.

@Sanchenski

Hi

Try using ASIO4All drivers, do note though this can introduce latency which is why MMM takes direct control of the sound card to the exclusion of other programs.
