When I activate Asio Driver I can't hear real time playback in Samplitude

JPGR29 wrote on 9/9/2014, 2:16 PM

I'm trying to record MIDI into samplitude and I kept getting this error;

"for software instruments realtime monitoring you have to activate the following options:

-ASIO driver system
-ASIO software monitoring or FX monitoring
-input monitoring (REC M)"

So I went and hit Asio Driver instead of MME and I can't hear playback. I have to go back to MME to hear it and then back to Asio to record. So when I'm using MIDI drums I have no idea what im playing until I'm done and I listen to it.

Hi,

This problem always annoys me.

This may help. Once you get everything lined up in the program preferences, including monitoring, close the preferences. Right-click on the red Record button on the transport control.

This brings up the following screen. Click on Info.

This should bring up the following screen. My problem was that my headphones were plugged into the front output and it was not activated. Activate the correct device for monitoring.

Failing that, check the Windows playback devices and volume control options. Right-click on the speaker in the tray at the bottom of the Windows screen.

Let us know if this helps. If you have problems upstream with the Program preferences, I have the screens for my setup.

Hi there. I am having similar problems. I wondered if you might be able to clarify?  I tried the ASIO driver and then went to the box you describe by pressing 'y' key to get the mdii options dialogue... from there I got the box with the spanner etc.. however, I did not get a list like yours, of options..  (E.G. headphones / speakers etc) it just says "high def audio device"  is this because my PC is too old, or 'cause I'm using Samplitude 2014, or just that it won't work ..  ?  I got as far as (after three days)  getting a sound.. yippee.  I now have my voice playing back..  much better quality if I use MME rather than ASIO and as I say, neither lets me monitor my vocal.. which means I cannot hear my voice as I am singing.   very hard to make a professional vocal if you cannot monitor.. the monitor button tells me it will only work with ASIO...  I tried using ASIO4ALL and it won't even give me playback..  soon buying a new more powerful PC and want to buy the new samplitude but if I can't use my mic and Irig Pro with it I will choose another DAW ...  please help someone!!  Magix just will not respond or get back to me. They gave me a response 'ticket' days ago.. still waiting for a human response. tried phoning and they do not want to talk to customers at all. I watched the videos but they gloss over these crucial details and do not help at all. I have wasted hours of my life trying to record this song. My music track is all done.. sounding great. I did it in Magix Music Maker actually.  But I'm now in Samplitude, and cannot get the vocal on  as no monitor facility

Hi,

You should have started a new thread as this one was quite old.

I presume that your iRig is connected through a USB port, correct? Did any software driver come with it?

I presume that you are using Samplitude Music Stuidio and not Samplitude Pro, correct?

Try this. In program settings, use ASIO4All and click on Mix Input and Playback under Monitoring Behaviour - bottom right of the Audio Setup screen.

Right click on the record button in the Transport control. If you are using 1 mic, set it to Mono. Under Options, try Mixer FX Monitoring, and make sure that Playback during recording is checked.

(I am using Samplitude Pro X3 but SMS should be similar)

Close this and check the main screen. Make sure that you have armed the track that you will record to by turning on the red record button of the track and that you turned on the monitor.

Try recording.

The sound should play back through he headphones attached to the iRig. I don't have one but my M-Audio M-Track is similar.

Does that help?

Hi, I know, you're right. I think desperation clouded my judgement but I got so frustrated last night I just jumped in.

yes, all your assumptions were correct so yes I will try your suggestions one by one and feedback, and thank you! I got another useless reply back form Magix this morning. I am slightly disgusted with them now actually. But anyway. I will try these suggestions and I want you to know I sincerely appreciate the contact and effort to communicate. Regards. Lyn

lyn-s98 wrote on 4/6/2017, 8:45 AM

footnote to that being the Irig Pro (a tiny little rectangular unit that mic goes in one end and the USB connection into the other end) does not have headphone socket so my headphones are connected to my speakers ...  will try the other stuff anyway in case it helps and let you know if I make a breakthrough. If I do not get results soon in Samplitude, I will try to record the vocals in Magix Music Maker and just master the song in Samplitude then wait for my new PC before I record any more music!  The reason I mixed the music down (to a WAV file) to sing against is because MMM just keeps crashing now as I think it cannot handle more than 32 tracks n my PC. But is I take the music in and sing against it no on MMM perhaps It will allow me to add a few vocals without crashing. It will be a bit like 'karaoke' but, whatever, if I can just get this one project finished I can refine all my hardware n software, budget permitting ;)

Tried going into settings , as you say it's not exactly the same as the pro version but I found it, and when the ASIO box comes up (I photographed it but do not know how to show you this), it only gives me one option. The option is:  high definition audio device.  That is it. I cannot choose form a load of possibilities in this settings box. They are simply not there.

lyn-s98 wrote on 4/6/2017, 9:16 AM

also when I right click the (large) red button at the bottom, (having armed the track already, of course, by pressing the tiny red button), absolutely nothing comes up, it's literally just the button to start and stop recording.

lyn-s98 wrote on 4/6/2017, 9:29 AM

OK scratch last comment I got the transport bar red button (it's at the top on my screen not the bottom.. yep I followed the instructions you gave to no avail I am afraid to say. Got that little info button, yeah, none of it makes any difference I cannot hear shit out of the headphones now, not even the playback either. Have a choice to go back to MME (none ASIO) and record with no monitoring at all, or, record on a different operating system that will allow me to use my microphone, Irig Pro, and allow me to hear what I am recording.

browj2 wrote on 4/6/2017, 4:30 PM

I don't know how to help. There is undoubtedly a way to get the program working with a USB input, ASIO4All and monitoring through headphones connected to the computer's audio card. Maybe someone else knows.

My setup works fine because I monitor through the M-Track.

Hi browj2 and lyn-s98,

ASIO4All has one major advantage over "standard" ASIO devices; it allows the user to select (sometimes) a different "input" and "output" (standard ASIO requires both to be "the same").

The setting should be available in the ASIO4All control panel. You need to click on the spanner icon, bottom right, which will open a screen similar to the one pictured below. It should include the output to your headphones, which you can click on and select (the small icon and arrow to the left of the specific item should light up).

Unfortunately, there is no guarantee this will work but it's certainly worth a try!

Hi

The reason for using ASIO4All is that it allows ASIO to be used with devices which do not support ASIO natively eg sound cards.

This is probably the reason ASIO does not work with your audio device.

Browj2  that's OK thank you for all your input anyway.   Hi Emmrecs   Yep I went into that window..  it only offers me one choice, sometimes two and have tried both. one is "high definition audio device" (speakers)  and one is "Irig Pro"  I tried choosing one then the other as the output device but nothing allows the monitor facility to kick in or the playback even to happen. I can get playback of a vocal using the MME driver but not using the ASIO4ALL driver or the ASIO Magix low latency option...  I reckon my pc sound card cannot cope with what is going on . I have a choice of choosing a brand new different working platform and or software, of ditching the Irig Pro scenario in which case how do I sing into a pc? what gear would I buy? I love my microphone but if I have to buy a cheap nasty one that goes USB in so be it.. but would I not then need a midi interface box to replace the Irig and end up with the same problem all over again?

lyn-s98 wrote on 4/7/2017, 6:28 AM

Johnebaker   thanks mate. Think that's more or less the conclusion I am reaching today, on my fourth day of trying to get this vocal on. I'm so depressed!  LOL And the song is good too. I wouldn't mind if it was a shitty demo but it has turned out to be a bit of a thing and I love it. That's life. Oh for the days when I could afford to go to a studio. Yet not, really, as I love the control of home recording so much, except when I hit a wall like this.. ;)  I sincerely appreciate the communication from everyone trying to help. has at least taken the pressure down a notch or two making contact with human beings.  I know it takes ages to type stuff out and you have other things to do and do not take it for granted when someone takes a few minutes just to try. Thanks people.

Hi,

What I think that you should be looking at is replacing the iRig with either a more advanced one like my M-Audio M-Track, or similar from Focusrite, Presonus or Behringer. You get 2 inputs for mic/guitar, and you can monitor back from the computer and or direct and adjust the level of the mix that you are monitoring.

When you record with only one mic or instrument, make sure that you select mono in the recording screen or you will end up with a stereo object with sound on one channel and nothing on the other. Not a big problem, just annoying to have to take 10 seconds to make the adjustment.

Good luck!

Hi

Also look at the Blue Yeti USB microphones, several users here have them and they appear to be very happy with them - note you can also connect your headphones to the mic to save loads of trailing cables.

Their support site is also very good.

Before deciding whether to purchase the PC you linked to do be aware that the PC processor you linked to is an old Intel Core 2 2.33 GHz model not an i5 or i7 processor.

What is the specification of your current PC?

Hi Browj   I will defo take a look at your suggestions. The M Aido, witout looking, sounds similar to something I had years ago called a Fast track which had two inputs and headphone socket but, in those days - 8 years ago, latency was too much of a huge issue and I never enjoyed using it back then and threw it away in the end. I know things have improved a lot since then. I got the Irig Pro  (around 100 pounds) because it seemed the best idea to be able to use my senheiser microphone with it, (not a USB mic, obviously)  as I like the tone of it over my crappy USB Samsung podcast mic, which is not suitable for singing but OK for talking I suppose. My idea was to use Irig Pro to get rid of all the noise, and be the mdi interface, and compressor etc, straight into my Ipad using Amblitube as the DAW (excellent programme) and using Audiobus to link the mic apps, vocal effects app (Vocal Live) and Amblitube..  you can buy microphone simulator apps which are actually amazing too, if I wanted to change the mic tone. None of that worked out. The reason is Ipad starts glitching and saying I need more storage space, and no matter how much I purchase it keeps wanting more. I got so sick of the noise - like a hissing noise reminded me of cassette tape (!) as well.. so, that all fell apart and I began to go back to explore using my home PC with my existing gear, and almost almost got there, too, apart form I cannot finish my track because cannot monitor these vocals, and here we all are he he  .. John you asked about the spec of my PC. It's a Dell Pentium 2 dual core home PC and it is full of crap as it is used by my husband and myself for all our photos, videos, email and everything. That is why I wanted to have a dedicated machine just for music and nothing else.. I want a  Mac but cannot afford one so.  I used to own a Mac G4 in 2002, I bought it for 5000, sold it for 900 a year later when I needed the money as had used all of my funds making a studio album!  ah well, back to reality now I can only ever spare a few hundred at any given time so.. yet I do not want to go down the studio route as I'm in love with the concept of doing everything at home, for the amount of artistic control and freedoms that brings. just got to get a setup that works that I can just get up in the morning and get on with it, LOL   it's a question of getting equipment that works well together and something with loads of RAM I think! Thank you for the opinion about that ebay PC.. was not at all sure.. someone on ebay kindly sent me the link as a suggestion, I had been looking at his refurbed ex corporate Mac books, is why..

johnebaker wrote on 4/9/2017, 8:52 AM

Hi

IMHO the best route for you at the moment is to go for a different audio USB interface.

A friend of mine uses a (IIRC) Rode studio mic plugged into a Focusrite audio interface and has no problems with his dual core PC. His 'recording studio' is the cupboard under the stairs!

Personally I would give the old PC a thorough clean up both physically inside and the hard drive - run Disk Cleanup and a Defrag - Defrag is not necessary if you have Windows 10 it does it automatically by default - and wait a little longer saving up for a brand new one.

Keep your eye open for a good deal, you should be able to get a decent PC for about £120 - 150 more than the refurbished one.

Hi,

The ASIO driver greatly reduces latency to an imperceptible level. The audio interfaces, like my M-Track and the Focusrite have XLR inputs for mics and other instruments, plus phantom power if needed. This is really the only way to go. Try to find someone who has one of these and try it out - with at least ASIO4All.

My keyboard is plugged in to a USB port and does not go through the M-Track. I have no problem recording both audio and keyboard at the same time (ok, my playing and singing are bad) and monitoring both plus whatever is already in the arranger.

I'm trying to record MIDI into samplitude and I kept getting this error;

"for software instruments realtime monitoring you have to activate the following options:

-ASIO driver system
-ASIO software monitoring or FX monitoring
-input monitoring (REC M)"

So I changed it and it still gives me the same message.

I played with the playback devices in the WDM Device List. I found that I could hear the click track with only my headphones enabled. Later I (while unselected) Enabled then Disabled HD Audio SPDIF, leaving the headphones active and I still got the message, But, the instruments started working.

I could keep doing this as a work around, but I would rather not have to do that every time.

Any help?

I have Pro X3 Build 157, 64bit. Windows 10 64bit.

Hi.

Just one thought: your screenshot of the ASIO4All control panel shows that your ASTRO Wireless Transmitter is active as output, rather than what I would have expected to see, your HD Audio Device. However, I see that that only offers SPDIF options for output. Very strange! Does it really NOT have any analogue output options to allow you to plug speakers and/or headphones in to it?

Unfortunately I am fairly unfamiliar with music software and how connected devices work with them. But Samplitude is the one I will stick with and learn, as I've tried many others before and did not like them. The ASTRO is running through optical, I don't know if that helps. I'm just using on board sound hardware. Will be getting a roland rubix24 usb audio interface (or something similar) soon, would that change anything?

I find it strange that I get the asio message, but can go in to the control panel and click on and off, the hd audio and then the VSTi's work, just running through the headphones.
