What software is recommended for Suite 2024

Jennifer-Barnes wrote on 5/30/2024, 2:32 AM

Just upgraded Suite from 2022 to 2024.
Finding it very slow - frequently frozen + taking 30mins to process a 20min DVD quality film.
Will need to upgrade my computer and looking for suggestions to give to computer team.

Process films up to 60mins, HD or SD usually.
Not gaming, just work as normal otherwise.

OS Name:                   Microsoft Windows 10 Home

Hi

I have removed all the superfluous information from the system specification you have given?

Is the processor in your system a 10th generation Intel with integrated graphics, - please give the specific model number including any suffix, eg i5-10400, i7-10700K etc ?

Is there an Nvidia or AMD graphics card in the system, if so which model?

In MMS 2024 settings what are the Device options, Import, Processing and Export options set to?

In Windows settings, Accessibility, Text cursor, Text cursor indicator is turned off, if not turn it off.

Hi.

Your system is relying in an internal GPU within the main Intel processor. These work but are slow at some computations. For that we would recommend a separate graphics card and if speed is important then the higher the specification card the better. Personally IMHO price vs performance for video at present would be a mid tier card such as the nvidia 4080.

But that does not explain the frozen / freezing aspect of your problems which is more likely down to lack of drive space on the C: drive, which depending on the project size and quality of the files such as 4K 50frames per second then you could need as much as 20% of free space on your C: drive or more if it is a small drive. (500GBs or less). Also having the source video files on the C: drive does not help with the amount of read and write cycles needed when dealing with large file sizes on Solid State Drives.

If you are running a lot of parallel tracks the amount of audio buffers could also be a problem and may need increasing slightly in the programs settings for playback, increasing the buffer and sample sizes one at a time. That needs to be done later in the fault finding stages as it is a less likely problem at this stage unless you are running a lot of tracks at once. I would start by telling us how large your C: drive is and how much free space there is on it and then the total length of your problem project along with the resolution.

The 10th gen processor itself should be fine along with the HD 630 integrated GPU, I myself am running a 9th gen CPU with the same graphics chip embedded and not suffering the same problems but I am also running an additional nvidia 3060 GPU (slightly older than a 4080) and have over 600GBs of free C: drive space. So the freezing is probably a drive space problem but the slowness of exporting is down to you not having a second, third party GPU that is much more capable of faster processing, especially when it comes to 3D rendering of any kind.

Hi

Are the Intel UHD 630 drivers up to date - the latest version is 31.0.101.2128 available here.

. . . . taking 30mins to process a 20min DVD quality film . . . .

Assuming you mean rendering and burning to disc or ISO image, this is quite possible depending on what effects have been applied to the video and/or images on the timeline, some are not Hardware Accelerated.

As @CubeAce has commented, adding a separate GPU such as a NVidia RTX 2000, 3000, 4000 series may help render performance.

Both John and I should have pointed out not to be tempted to get too cheap a graphics card. I am not overly sure of AMD graphics cards relating to performance but in the Case of nvidia cards I personally would not go for a 1600 series or earlier. The reason I suggested a 4080 is because at present in the UK at least that card is the cheapest for it's equivalent performance figures to the earlier 20 and 30 series which are currently more expensive than the 4080. If you want to go to a higher performing card then it is a question of diminishing returns as card prices increase verses the amount of additional performance you get for video editing and exporting.

Please do not avoid looking at the amount of free space on your C: drive that you have as the temp files created by the program can get really huge.

The 16GBs of motherboard ram you have should be sufficient for most projects but using something like New Blue Titler Pro may need more if you alter any of the preset templates.

Some freezing on playback may be alleviated by using proxy files for the timeline playback or reducing the video quality in the monitor or reducing the amount of frames used per second. All of which can be found by the little lightning symbol on the timeline.

I would have added a picture but at present The forum won't allow me to upload one.
