Wavehammer 2.0, can someone elaborate a little on it?

Former user wrote on 2/6/2022, 3:30 PM

On SFP, I have Wavehammer 2.0 and have tried to research on how to leverage it. Apart from marketing text, there is scant information on it. Most of my audio work is voice-over, interviews, and audio-for-video, which is mainly documentary and field recordings. Where would Wavehammer 2.0 be most effective? Is there another product you would compare Wavehammer 2.0 to? There are a lot of software VST compressors out there, is Wavehammer 2.0 comparable to any?

It sounds colorless to me and I already have many plug-ins that will simply flatten peaks. I do not like the UI either. But that is my option.

@rraud That's why I ask, so I can learn what the pro's think. 😉 If there are other tools you use, please enlighten. I am just trying to understand what it is that Wavehammer 2.0 is supposed to do and best-use-case scenarios.

Hi

. . . . here is scant information on it. . . . . just trying to understand what it is that Wavehammer 2.0 is supposed to do . . . .

Other than what is in the manual there is little in the way of detail of how and what to set for the Wave Hammer plug-in which is an audio compressor and a volume maximizer.

There are many alternatives, some free, which IMHO are better, personally I use the MeldaProduction mDynamicEQ, which has a good manual here and can be tried for free.

@johnebaker Oh, so you are saying Wavehammer2.0 is a dynamicEQ. Thanks! I never would have guessed!

rraud wrote on 2/7/2022, 11:22 AM

Wave Hammer 2.0 is a 4-band compressor and can be used for some paragraphic EQ chores, with or w/o dynamics.

OT: btw @johnebaker, I love how the MeldaProduction plug-ins can be resized. The overall skin display is nifty as well and has many other display options.

Hi

the Melda Production mDynamicEQ has up to 5 bands and each band has a set of parameters which can be set as shown below, the bands can also be adjusted for width and depth using the 4 handles on each band indicator in the graph display.

I use it in Music Maker, Movie Edit Pro and Video Pro X.

There is a very extensive discussion in the Vegas-Pro forum, some of which is about Wavehammer. There are also many basic things of sound editing discussed.
It's in German, but you can use translation programs.

And - if you want to read through the whole thread and possibly work through it on a test basis - reserve at least one day for it as a precaution.

@Walter.I Thanks for the link. I want to learn more about the tools I have with SFP, as they include a lot, and understand what they are used for. Part of the reason why I get other tools is that I do not always understand the SFP way of doing things. For example, the SFP parametric EQ looks confusing (but later saw the 'track parametric EQ' which is closer to what I am used to). I picked up the DDMF IIEQ Pro because it is well-reviewed and affordable. I was trained in school to use Adobe, and Audition includes a nice parametric EQ--so with DDMF I could sort of re-create experiences from school in SFP. Now, bit by bit. I am getting used to the SFP way of doing things. Maybe I will grow past SFP tools or stick with it, but I at least want to properly understand and leverage them first. Had I a better underlying knowledge, maybe I would not care about the way the tool looks. In school, learning Adobe took precedence over underlying principles.

Here is a free 1.5 octave graphic EQ that I like from https://www.manda-audio.com/products.php
It sports a separate HP and LP filter section with 6,12 or 24 dB/oct slopes. The UI is real nice and most importantly, it sounds good.

@rraud Thanks, another weapon in the arsenal. 😀 @johnebaker I have heard of Melda, they seem to be well regarded and respected. Plus, they have a free library of plugins. I will give them a try. Thanks.

As for Soundforgpro itself, I think the more plugins you occupy, the less control and sensibility you dominate.
SFpro has its own workflow clearly divided in
1,
Process: here the fundamental go e.g. Normalize-[sys]Maximize peak value can drift your voice.

2,
Effects: here WaveHammer-[sys]Voice gives your voice in a similar loudness by speaking (not here too weak there too strong etc.).

3,
Tools: NoiseReduction-make a preset for your record environment such as your livingroom, and you get clean and natural voice, more natural than iZotopeRX.

4,
FX Favorites: Organized for category or origin. You can see teh WaveHammer2.0 is a SequoiaFX.
I own ACID pro so I copied the Analog Modelling Suite hereby.
In short, there're at least 3 parallel FXsystems you needn't go one by one. Just use these which you do like.
I think the WaveHammer2.0 is more a style redesigner more than a dynamicEQ. Never used.

5,
As for my voice recording, I'd add a NoiseGate filter then, mostly this one:

Neither noise reduction pack (NR-2.0 or RX Elements) can attenuate acoustical reflections, They can reduce din type noise (HVAC for instance). The pricey RX Advanced has a de-verb tool as does SpectraLayers Pro. There are less pricey de-verb plugs available singularly.

Yelandkeil wrote on 2/8/2022, 12:11 PM

@rraud, thanks to point it out.

Wrong expression of mine. I mean the constant noise in the living room. e.g. my PC-case is just half meter away if I record and concentrate looking into my monitor.

PS:

It's strange by me. My SFpro works only with the version 14.0.0.65. All the other versions just crash due to data format or data with markers/regions.

Any way, I don't know why.

I find using this helps a lot with attenuating room sounds when doing voice-over :
