Hi,

Take a look at this video about Pinnacle Studio and dynamic video masking. They show that there is a lot of fine-tuning to do and you can use the brush. The mask detects the outline, but goes off occasionally. In this case, it seemed to me that the narrator did not exaggerate the capabilities. Quite interesting.

Photo editing programs have similar line following features. Xara and PaintShop Pro, the only 2 that I have, can do this. However, fine-tuning is often necessary on just one image when the distinction between the object and the background is difficult. Imagine for a video.

With VPX/MMS, we have or had Xara in which we could create an animated mask that could be adjusted frame by frame or skip some frames and tween between them. Unfortunately, Xara never improved on this. Worse, the line following feature for a photo that Xara has doesn't work in the animation mode on the background video. They had all the potential, were way ahead of the game, but never capitalized on it. A shame. I wonder what Magix has in mind for this, having lost even the minimal ability to do animated masking and rotoscoping thanks to their divorce from Xara.

Given that other companies, like Boris (Mocha) and proDAD(Hide) are already doing and specializing in this type of thing and are way ahead, I find it strange that Vegas/Magix would invest money in trying to do the same. The same goes for video stabilization. Mercalli is already way ahead.

Hi,

response from Magix support about updating that bug that limits a clip transferred from the timeline to the temporary folder to one second:
"I cannot tell you at the moment whether this bug will be fixed before the release of VPX 16."

The reason for having masking and stabilizing within the software is because everyone else has it. You see in Pinnacle it's there, and has been for over 3 years. It's there in other editing software, so you have to have it in "yours" to be competitive.

Masking is easy in Pinnacle as was shown in the video. The results, depending on the footage, can be really good. In Vegas though, it's "hit or miss" and is massively slow in responding to inputs. The "AI" isn't so smart at this time.

As for stabilizing footage, that too should be a part of the software. Vegas stabilization works great when you have a reasonably smooth clip and want to smooth it out a little more. Why should someone be have to buy Mocha or Mercalli, although Mocha Vegas is included in Vegas Suite.

@Reyfox

Hi

. . . . Vegas stabilization works great when you have a reasonably smooth clip and want to smooth it out a little more . . . .

It can be good, however I have observed 3 'unintended results' with it.

  1. Over aggressive zoom - I have commented on this before here, AFAICS there is no way to reduce the zoom, only add to it.

  2. A tendency to darken the video, see clip below

  3. Unwanted smoothing out of zoom effect done in camera, at the end of this clip the in camera zoom was done intentionally, Vegas 'stabilised it out'

@johnebaker maybe it's me, but the Vegas and Original look, the color looks the same. It's Mercalli that looks brighter than the Original.

One way to know for sure is compare the scopes.

Additionally, this is what I see in Vegas Pro when I select Vegas Video s Stabilization. It certainly a few more features than MMS or VPX.

With Vegas Split Screen View on the Preview window, I can see if there is a color change/shift, and am not seeing it when I've used it, like just now to test.

@Reyfox Hi, do you have Mocha Vegas? I don't think stabilisation is inc in that version but there may be a way of using the data in conjunction with another fx.. 🤷‍♂️

@anyone, This is a post on the Vegas forum ref to stabilisation , I didn't post my result (video) with Mocha Pro because it was not as good as a couple of the other suggestions. https://www.vegascreativesoftware.info/us/forum/stabilization--142393/?page=1

Reyfox wrote on 4/3/2024, 12:00 PM

@Former user yes, I have Mocha Vegas. You can use it for stabiliztion.

Former user wrote on 4/3/2024, 12:18 PM

@Reyfox Thanks 👍 Yep, but as I thought the data needs to be transferred to a Vegas fx, in that case it's PinP or Vegas's Stabilization.

Reyfox wrote on 4/3/2024, 12:29 PM

@Former user, for sure the data needs to be transferred, just like it was with masking.. But it is doable to stabilize along with masking/tracking. A good addition to Vegas.

This Monday, if the expected update for Vegas Pro comes out, Magix VPX could very well do the same to make its users more optimistic!

@Former user You should have Mocha Pro 2023, which now has the same capabilities as Mocha Vegas.

New in Mocha Pro 2023 v10.0.5

VEGAS Pro Mask and Tracking Controls: The Mocha Pro OFX Plug-In now supports VEGAS tracking data and Bezier Mask controls in the latest update to VEGAS Pro 21.

Former user wrote on 4/7/2024, 4:38 AM

@Nalmcruto I know, but I don't know why you're telling me this, the discussion was about stabilisation in Vegas Mocha not Mocha Pro, whether they have some of the same capabilities or not they're not the same fx, I can't add Mocha Pro to a project & from that determine what Vegas Mocha can do. My main point was curiousity about whether Vegas Mocha has stabilization, it doesn't but Mocha Pro does have built in Stabilization..

Reyfox wrote on 4/7/2024, 9:34 AM

@Former user I am by no means a Mocha "anything" when it comes to using it. While it doesn't have a "stabilization" button so to speak, the video can be stabilized in Mocha Vegas. Not as easy to use as say Mercalli for sure, but it's addition to Vegas as a tool is a great feature.

Right now, I am "in between" projects. That, and my yearly allergies has me not wanting to do anything.

With Vegas Stabilization in Magix Movie Studio, there are really no adjustments. More in VPX, but even a couple more in Vegas.

I shoot everything I edit, so I can have stable videos. Even using the Vegas stabilizer works for what I need. Subtle stabilization.

@Reyfox Same here, normally my camera is on a lightweight tripod or just handheld, I've learnt over the yrs to not move too fast & consider the final view i want so I rarely need stabilization, but I do work outside or on not so solid floors/ground, the wind can affect the tripod, something I'm doing or someone walking around,

This is on a tripod but it must have been touching the drill stand or the bench, also there's boards on the floor with as always plenty of sawdust,

Orig

Stabilized with Mocha Pro, to be honest as you say any of the basic inbuilt stabilization options do for me,

I like the first video more! 😉

I've read some people say they will fix it in post. I'm one to not want to spend time "fixing" anything in post. Tweaking, yes, fixing, I'd rather not. But, it's good to have tools that will help that happen.
