VPX - patch 16.0.2.317

@DugsBugs

Strange.

Try using the MS uninstall tool to make sure that nothing is left, like a patch. If something is still there, then you won't be able to reinstall VPX.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/17588/windows-fix-problems-that-block-programs-being-installed-or-removed

This was a solution given to me by Magix and has worked in the past.

Thanks John.
Yes I have used the tool. I have had it for a while.
There are no pro x 10 files remaining on the computer although it still remembers my product code and email.
The program installs but it is unusable.

Well I did a full custom install rolling back to Windows 1803 and everything is working great.
Amazing what a good clean out does.
It's a case of too much rubbish that can't simply be uninstalled or deleted.
I was able to get the 1803 download from Microsoft support via remote session.
It actually fixed the freezing i was getting at startup.
I'm still going to stay with VPX 298 for now.
Happy days at the moment.
Doug.

I recently upgraded from Video Pro X 15 to 16. Multicam worked fine before. It was not the best, but it never hung up on me. Now, the first time I go to multicam under X 16, and it stutters and judders and can't do it even with proxy files. I did not even need proxy files before with 2 cameras. This is a big bummer. I am under Windows 7 and I have the latest update. Yes, this Lenova laptop is older, but it has an intel i7 4 core CPU and ran fine before with 8gig ram. I have tried changing various settings such as cache and others. I can make it worse, but not better.

Welcome to the Magix forums.

I recently upgraded from Video Pro X 15 to 16

The most recent version of VPX is 10, so I suspect you are actually referring to Magix Vegas Pro. If so, the dedicated forum for it is here. I suggest you repost your question there. 😀

No Jeff. I am speaking of Video Pro X. The version I currently have installed is 16.0.2.317
Everything worked... OK with version 15. There have always been some bugs with the timeline, and one is still there, but Multicam worked with no hickups without proxy files. Now it barely works with proxy files. How can I revert back to the last version of Video Pro X 15? You say the most recent version is VPX 10? Something is wrong here.

Something is wrong here...

Hi Glenn:

What's wrong is Magix's numbering system! Magix run two parallel numbering systems. The commercial numbering has, as Jeff comments, recently moved from VPX 9 to VPX 10. However, as you have found, if you click the Help | About menu, it will tell you you are running a number like 16.0.2.317.

This dichotomy is never explained anywhere on the Magix website that I'm aware of. Indeed, I suspect that Magix is trying to manage such a wide portfolio of products since the Vegas line was added that the sales & marketing, and the development areas are trying to keep so many balls in the air they never have time to catch on how tricky their numbering systems can be for the humble punter. I just hope they have a better grasp internally!

It's even more complicated now that the so-called "Update Service" system has been introduced; you can buy VPX version X at some point in time, and later you may slide seamlessly but without warning to actually possessing a copy of VPX X+1 say, with your internal version (the currently 16.0..) creeping up through various patches and upgrades. It's a great way for no-one (and certainly here on the Forum) to be entirely sure what they're dealing with. [Sorry - minor rant over!]

Coming back to your original point, multi-cam in VPX ceased to function correctly via an update at the end of July 2018, and has been broken ever since (seven and a half months). Hopefully Magix will sort this soon, because their advertising still falsely claims that VPX can do multicam. We shall see. I need multicam in my work too, so I am entirely sympathetic to your plight. I've put my copy of VPX back on the shelf until they sort it, and have been surviving on an old copy of Movie Edit Pro 2017 which still does multicam perfectly.

Best wishes - Mike -

@Glenn-Woiler

OK. Understood. (And my apologies for my last post.)

The "numbering system" for VPX is somewhat confusing, to say the least! There have only ever been 10 versions of VPX, (if you check the standard installation folder on your computer, it's C:\ProgramFiles\MAGIX\Video Pro X\10) but the Help>About does indeed say 16.0.2.317! I can't explain the apparent anomaly!

I've not needed to do any multicam work for some time but VPX (10) has been reliable for me. However, it would be very useful to know rather more about the format of your video files. The free MediaInfo utility will tell exactly which codecs etc. are used and you could post the result of the Text view to your next reply.

It would also be useful if you could give us rather more information about your computer. You mention you have an intel i7 processor, but precisely which one? What about Hard Drive (type, size free space) and is there a separate GPU or is all graphics processing done by the CPU? Also, I have to say I think 8GB RAM is the absolute bare minimum to ensure even reasonably smooth playback/editing, sorry! You can see the spec of my desktop in my signature if you would like to compare set-ups.

As to reverting to the previous version - N.B I have no knowledge of whether this will work - but previous version(s) should be listed, with their product keys and download links in your MAGIX account service page. However, bear in mind that you must completely uninstall the current version before you attempt to install the older version (this tutorial gives very detailed instructions on how to do this - you can ignore the fact that it was originally written for users experiencing problems following any upgrade to Windows 10) but I'm pretty certain you will lose most if not all add-ons which have been offered in earlier versions and you may well not be able to restore them.

In the long run, given that Microsoft has announced the end of its support for Windows 7, you may find that you need to "bite the bullet" and make the move to Win 10. (I moved straight from 7 to 10 and have never regretted it!) Whether that change will also necessitate a new computer...?! 😢

Thanks Jeff for all that. Last time I looked, the Magix folder for VPN said... VPN 8 !

I'll try to get you all the info you asked for. Busy at the moment. My original laptop on Windows 8.1 died last year so I put this (VPX) on another old laptop designed for engineering. It has a 4 core (8 cores) i7 with Windows 7 and was surprisingly fast... better than the older first VPX laptop. All is good, except this Lenova does not have a quality display so color correction has been difficult. But, I bought a new Lenova from B&H with a 6 core i7 a few months ago with Windows 10. I wanted to try VPX on it. To my surprise, the older "15" version did not like Windows 10. Stupid me... not thinking about the complexities of operating systems and software... I complained that audio was missing in clips and was given a free upgrade to this version that works with Windows 10. Unfortunately, the new very fast laptop that runs Resolve perfectly with nice monitor, did not run VPX nearly as well as the old laptop with Windows 7. So, I let the older laptop update to version build "16" to find out that, although parts of it look more polished, it had some problems! One such problem, unless I don't know how to do it, is when applying a Swing effect - transition to the end of a still image, I could not reverse the movement so the image swings out instead of "in" as it does when at the head of the clip image. I could do this with the old version 15. I tried everything I could think of and searched it and there is no way to reverse the transition. So, other than a fade for a still image... transition effects were gone for me. I guess I need to dig in and learn Davinci Resolve. It, the full version, came free with my new Blackmagic Pocket4k. I do mostly sermons and nature videos and VPX was a very fast way to get it done, but now... not so sure anymore. The new laptop with 16 gigs ram hickups and studders trying to do anything with VPX.

@Glenn-Woiler

Hi Glenn,

Swing 1 effect: I tried VPX7 and VPX10 and I can't get it to swing out at the end of an image. Clicking on Horizontal has no discernable effect. The only thing that I can do is Vertical, which changes the swing from the right to the left; strange. I also tried in the latest MEP and it does the same.

The one thing that I did notice is that in VPX10 and MEP, the swing effect does not complete itself correctly. In VPX10, it kind of fades out. In VPX7, after swinging, it shrinks from the back to the front. In MEP, it does not even fade out at the end.

There are some strange things in these latest versions.

For the types of transitions like Swing, I use Pixelan 3D Six Pack. However, it does not have a straight swing towards the front as you mention for VPX. It does have curls towards the front.

@Recycler

Hi Jeff,

About the versions: On my laptop, VPX is installed under:

C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X\10

but the program data is all under:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Video Pro X\8

Do you or anyone else remember having to download and install the additional stuff from the time that we got 8 until now (10)? I don't. I think this is why the program data is still under 8 and not 10.

That reminds me, I have added some collages and user effects in there that I should back up to a safe place and documented, ready to be added back in should the program data be renewed in a future version.

All:

Overall, I have noticed a general problem with playback as soon as any effect is applied. I cannot even get rendered transitions to play back smoothly. For me on my desktop, rendering a range no longer seems to have any effect. I'll do some tests on my Surface Pro.

I have updated the list with #20 added. All have been passed on to Magix. The fellow handling the ticket has been ill, so progress was affected.

Frustrating. I must say, in years past, before the world of HD, I edited in Liquid Edition, by Pinnacle. There were very high quality page peels, page turns, curls, and all sorts of variations and each effect transition was adjustable in just about every aspect of the look - curl diameter, direction, and so much more. It hurts to need something like this and not have it in VPX. Before that, I was editing with Video Action by DPS on a 486 computer. The effects back then were even better. I have no idea what add on package would give me what I used to have. Granted... I did not use the bulk of effects because they can be hoaky, but still... I miss those days.

@Glenn-Woiler

I keep Pinnacle Studio around just in case I want to use some of its effects, but mainly for the music (Scorefitter).

Take a look at the Pixelan 3D Six Pack. Scroll down a bit to see the examples in actions. There is a trial version of all Pixelan products. The watermark disappears when you purchase.

http://www.pixelan.com/3d/intro.htm

I also use Pixelan SpiceMaster Pro, not just for transitions, but for some other effects as well. See my tutorials on this. It is incredibly powerful and totally flexible.

We're getting off topic here.

It has been many months now with no resolution of the 20 items on the bug list (see the first page of this thread). This is ridiculous!

I am particularly peeved about not being able to use the interface with Xara. I already went through about 2 years of frustration with Magix when they broke it the last time. Then, the video would not advance in the Xara animator. Now, we don't even see the video. This should have been fixed within 1 week of the problem being identified and reported.

Hi Doug,

Sorry to hear of your problems. The only thing that I can suggest is that you use the Microsoft uninstaller program to make sure that you get rid of any patches, and then reinstall. There must be something more causing your problems - Windows, hardware, Mondays...

All:

I have just refreshed a (raised a new) ticket with Magix giving them the list with references and images. I find it very frustrating that these bugs have not been given priority, especially ones like the link with Xara, using the External Audio Editor (2 bugs), and the Multi-cam problems.

Judging from what I saw with MEP, we can expect to get some new titles (fonts) and no bug fixes.

Grrrr! Just looked back at the various patches and bug lists and it goes back to July of last year. Basically, we've had a dud version of VPX that cannot be used properly for almost a year. What do we have to do to get Magix to fix the problems, some of which are as simple as giving us 2 folders of missing icons?

@DugsBugs

Glad to see that you got VPX10 working again. We need to keep bugging Magix to fix this program.

Hi All

"Mouse pointer no longer disappears when moving and trimming objects in the timeline"

I presume this is in fact fixed - as I have not yet had the courage to install any recent update of the program even though there are some new features I would like. Ridiculous!

Have they also fixed the problem where the mouse pointer "sticks" to the playhead if you happen to be dragging it when the program decides to Autosave? Not that I am hopeful because this has been a bug for many versions.

Where some are reporting poorer performance with recent versions I just want to suggest checking you Windows Power Settings are set to "Performance" and not "Balanced". I had this inexplicably change on my system and suspected a Windows update had been the cause. Lo, on checking the Asus driver downloads for my Asus Z170 Mobo I stumbled across an update fix (for the Asus AI Suite which I use for my mild overclock, fan control, etc.) which referred to a Win10 update that caused the power plan to return to "Balanced". So strange things can happen....

Hi Peter

No issue here with 'disappearing mouse pointer' on version 16.0.2.322.

. . . . where the mouse pointer "sticks" to the playhead if you happen to be dragging it when the program decides to Autosave . . . .

I have not seen this happen with VPX or MEP, however, I have had this happen in other programs eg Firefox and Chrome when scrolling using a mouse with a scroll wheel and have accidentally clicked the wheel which, for the mice I have - Logitech, Microsoft and Dell - puts it into 'auto scroll by mouse movement'.

Hi guys,

I haven't noticed the mouse pointer disappearing when moving or trimming objects recently, so it may have been fixed.

However, I don't think that the mouse pointer sticking to the playhead if you happen to be dragging when the program does an autosave has been resolved. I didn't report it; I just lived with it. I did have some cases of crashes occurring during an autosave when dragging an object. I'll watch for this.

No reply back from Magix yet about my "new" ticket raised on Monday. I sent an update yesterday noting that nothing had been fixed since Monday. I'll send a reminder tomorrow if I don't see a major fix tomorrow morning; there was nothing today.

Thanks for the info, the mouse sticking is definitely not a scroll wheel problem and has been also mentioned in the German Forum prior to the patch.
