Video Pro X14 lags/freezes on Move or Resize, even when run as Admin

Video Pro X14 lags/freezes on Move and Resize, even when run as Admin.

When I try to Move or Resize a jpg image, or when I try to color text, Video Pro X freezes for 10 or 20 seconds.

REVISED: This workaround worked once only: Disable SecurityHealthSystray.exe in Windows Task Manager / Startup, and then reboot. VPX must also be run as Admin.

After a few minutes, VPX crashed, and then the workaround stopped working.

UPDATE: If I move a clip, deselect it, and then reselect it, I have to wait a minute before I can move it again. After waiting, I can move it repeatedly without any lag. But if I deselect it and then reselect it, I encounter the lag again.

UPDATE #2: Rebooting Windows with msconfig / Diagnostic Startup does not help.

The problem gets even worse if I put text in front of the jpg image, and then try to move or resize the two items alternately.

Has anyone else encountered this freeze / lag problem?

Any suggestions?

I'm using:
Video Pro X14 version 20.0.3.175
OS: Windows 11 version 22h2

Hi.

Short answer. Yes, very much so but I'm surprised with you having a 3080 GPU.

What CPU are you running? Intel 9th gen or older perhaps?

Hi

In addition to @CubeAce question:

Which Antivirus program are you using?

Have tried restarting the computer Windows buttton, Power icon, Restart .

Are the RTX 3080 drivers up to date, the latest version is 526.98 (31.0.15.2698).

Finally, and this may sound odd - if you are using a wireless mouse try changing the battery - I had the same issue with lagging, as you have commented, last week. The mouse battery was nearly flat - a new battery an VPX sprung to life.

Thanks for your reply @CubeAce.

I bought the 3080 graphics card a few months ago, hoping it would enable me to use my chronically dysfunctional VPX installation, but the new graphics card did not fix the problem at all. Nor did upgrading to Windows 11. VPX used to work fine, a long time ago. I suspect Magix has not kept up with all the Windows updates which Microsoft forces on everyone every month. But that's just a guess.

To test my hardware, I tried using Davinci Resolve 18.0.3 just now, and it's still working fine, even after my recent upgrade to Windows 11 version 22h2. In DR, I can move, resize, and crop images easily, without the slightest lag. So I guess it is not my computer configuration that is preventing that functionality in VPX.

However, I'm reluctant to switch to DR because of how it stores and backs-up projects deep within nested folders. Blackmagic's stupidity on that point undermines my confidence in their judgment. Moreover, their deeply-nested folders actually break backups in some cases.

Also, I've been using Cubase Pro 12 recently, without any issues, so my computer is fine with that too.

As for my actual computer components, they are listed in my signature, but for your convenience, I have added them to my original post, and they are below as well:

Windows Defender. It seems to be working.

Okay, I tried that, but it made no difference.

Okay, I've updated the driver, but again, there's no difference.

I'm using a *wired* Kensington trackball mouse. It seems reliable in all respects.

I've also done some system maintenance, such as registry cleanup and sfc /scannow, but the lag / freezing remains.

Any other thoughts?

@Galaxy

Hi.

I'm the same as you. No wireless mouse or keyboard.

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with the program as such.

I think the program needs a newer generation CPU that can handle resizable bar.

To be more precise, the motherboard must be able to use resizable bar.

Your 3080 is capable of using resizable bar with the correct motherboard but those motherboards start with 10th gen Intel CPUs and onward.

Both Windows and the program are relying more now on that change for improved performance and better compatibility with Intel's' own Arc graphics cards, but the newer nvidia cards can use resizable bar as well, with a supporting motherboard.

At least that is my conclusion based on that people here using tenth gen CPUs onward with a decent graphics card do not seem to be suffering this problem with VPX 14. I suspect some AMD Ryzen based users have also benefited as they used resizable bar before Intel.

I am willing to accept this is all speculation on my part and I could be wrong but I'm also noticing an increase and alteration of the amounts of ram being used compared to how my last version of VPX used it. In some situations where my graphics card would have handled a certain processing job it is now being done by the CPU instead and I have no idea why that has changed.

In fact on my system I can't export longer project renders using my nvidia GPU only, as it crashes the program.

Now I see I'm not the only one with this problem I will raise a ticket with Magix.

Out of interest, does this happen when working with HD as well as 4k material?

Do you find cross-fades make the playback stutter?

Does adding more than one effect to a clip make playback stutter?

Have you had to change your audio buffer and samples since changing over to VPX 14?

Hi

Thanks for the specs of you PC, it should not have any difficulty running VPX 14.

Unfortunately I have to disagree with @CubeAce comment:

. . . . I think the program needs a newer generation CPU that can handle resizable bar . . . .

Resizable Bar is a feature to take advantage of multiple graphic cards/chipsets (GPUs) to enable what in essence is parallel processing and encoding across all installed GPU's that support Re-Bar. It has no bearing on the response time of the PC to the mouse actions - sorry Ray.

However I do agree with Rays comment: . . . . I don't think there is anything wrong with the program . . . .

Hi John.

It might not be resizable bar per se but something is difference about how the resources are allocated to different tasks in this version of the Infusion engine. Tasks that were assigned to being used by my Intel HD 630 now get completed by the CPU and that is when I see the most amount of freezing or stuttering. If the HD 630 does get used then the program can just stop with this warning.

John, you know I keep everything as up to date as I can and the VPX specs say's 🙄 that HD 630 is compatible.

I would have thought a 3080 in a system should be sufficient but obviously not. It may just also need a more powerful processor as well, with or without an internal GPU. After all, we know older processors beyond a certain age do not work with previous generations of VPX etc.

The system does not crash at all only using CPU power on my machine but a slug on crutches would be faster and playback is not reliably smooth, even with proxy files, or pre-rendering. In fact it sometimes makes it worse.

Ray.

Hi John.

No, I'm getting that as well as my other problems. No sign of CPU, GPU or disc usage during the freeze, it just freezes for an indiscriminate period of time. Even a tiny movement of a clip can trigger it. It is worse when I have only one GPU enabled. No crashes doing that so far, only freezes.

Good idea. Thanks.

Out of interest, does this happen when working with HD as well as 4k material?

I've never attempted 4k. Only HD, and that's enough of a challenge.

Do you find cross-fades make the playback stutter?

No.

Does adding more than one effect to a clip make playback stutter?

I tried just now. When I applied the second effect, VPX froze for about a minute, but then I was able to play without any apparent stuttering.

Have you had to change your audio buffer and samples since changing over to VPX 14?

No, I haven't had much trouble with the audio. Generally, playback is fine.

It's when I try to move or resize objects, or use the color selector, that freezing and lagging become a problem. As for other effects, I don't use them much, because I don't want to invest much time or effort if it's so hard to get basic features such as zooming and panning to work.

Until recently, I was using version 10, and that was having problems too. But even v10 was working ok as recently as Jan 2022. After the problems started, I thought that upgrading to VPX 14 would fix them, but no, the problems have persisted.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi

Not sure if this is part of the problem but the Xtreme Intel CPUs do not have Integrated GPUs.

I think the Size / Position effect is normally HW accelerated by the Intel GPU.

Also, if it is a Skylake it is a 6th Gen, so it is from 2016 approx.

Hi @johnebaker

Thanks for your suggestions.

Was this an 'in situ' upgrade or a total wipe and fresh install?

I upgraded to Windows 11 from Windows 10. Neither was a clean install.

While I was still on Windows 10, VPX 10 was usable, but never great. It really started malfunctioning seriously early in 2022, if I recall correctly. Upgrading to Windows 11 and then to VPX 14 did not help. Nor did upgrading my video card.

Windows 11 updates - are the following updates installed - KB5019980, KB5020622, KB5017271 ?

Those Windows updates were not installed. I have now installed them, but the problem remains.

The next step would be to re-install the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables - see this Support article step 4

Okay, I've installed the C++ redistributables now, but VPX 14 is still lagging and freezing.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you ever had the hard drive checked for errors with " chkdsk C: /x /f /r "

I'm using SSD drives for the OS and data, and some people have had problems with chkdsk on SSD drives.

For example, https://www.tomshardware.com/news/chkdsk-windows-10-command-breaking-ssds

As a last resort, I might try chkdsk, but not until I've exhausted all other options.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion.

I don't think my processor is Xtreme, but you're right, it does not have an Integrated GPU.

I think the Size / Position effect is normally HW accelerated by the Intel GPU.

Even if an integrated GPU were present, wouldn't it automatically be deactivated upon installation of a GPU card?

Actually, my CPU is 9th generation, as indicated by the 9 in the product name: Intel i7-9800x Skylake processor.

Also, my installation of VPX 10 was functional until mid-January 2022, so my hardware must have been adequate. The next time I tried to use it, in late March, I encountered the lagging and freezing. In the interim, I did nothing to my computer but install the required monthly Windows 10 updates.

Since then, I have upgraded to Windows 11 and VPX 14, and I have installed a better graphics card too, but the problem remains.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestions.

Hi John.

I have looked at the use of resizable bar further and it can be used with one GPU in the system and is CPU (and motherboard dependent as well. (10th gen onward for Intel).

Please read here and here. I know the articles relate to gaming but I'm sure there are crossover points along the line somewhere. It may also explain why Magix is recommending the use of game ready drivers.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . Even if an integrated GPU were present, wouldn't it automatically be deactivated upon installation of a GPU card? . . . .

Short answer - not anymore.

To get back on track after the diversion into Re-Bar - the issue you are having is very odd, and has been carried over from Windows 10 to 11.

At this point I would suggest you raise a Support ticket, if you have not done so, and give Magix full details of the steps taken to try and fix the issue. They may ask you to download an analysis tool to do an analysis of the PC and upload the data back to them to analyse.

@johnebaker

As you advised, I have submitted a support request to Magix, as follows:

For the past 8 months, VPX has been malfunctioning so much that it is barely usable. Can you please help me fix this problem?

When I try to move or resize a jpg image, or when I try to color text, Video Pro X freezes for 20 seconds, or often much longer.

Sometimes, I can move a clip without any lag, but that is rare. If I deselect a clip after moving it, and then reselect it and try to move it, there is always a lag.

Generally, I make quite simple HD videos, 1920 x 1080. I have no trouble with audio or video playback.

The problem started in March 2022. At the time, the only recent change I had made to my computer was to install the monthly Windows updates, as required by Microsoft.

To solve the problem, I have taken the following steps, none of which have made any difference:

  • I upgraded from VPX 10 to VPX 14.
  • I upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
  • I upgraded my graphics card from Asus ROG GTX 1070 to EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3: 12G
  • I updated the RTX 3080 drivers.
  • I upgraded to windows 11 version 22H2.
  • I tried running VPX 14 as admin.
  • I disabled SecurityHealthSystray.exe in Windows Task Manager / Startup, and then rebooted.
  • I rebooted Windows with msconfig / Diagnostic Startup.
  • I uninstalled and reinstalled VPX 14.
  • I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth successfully.
  • I ran sfc /scannow successfully.
  • I installed the following Windows updates: KB5019980, KB5020622, KB5017271
  • I re-installed the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables.

Davinci Resolve and Cubase Pro 12 both work very well on my computer. I have no trouble with any other software. My antivirus software is Windows Defender.

I am using the following software and hardware:

  • Video Pro X14 version 20.0.3.175
  • OS: Windows 11 version 22h2
  • Graphics card: EVGA RTX 3080 FTW3
  • USB Audio interface: RME Fireface UCX
  • Asus X299 motherboard
  • Intel i7-9800x Skylake processor,
  • 64 GB RAM Kingston HyperX
  • Corsair Pro 850 watt power supply
  • Dell UHD monitor
  • Wired Kensington trackball mouse
  • The program and data are on separate SSD Drives.

You're right, I didn't name my USB audio interface correctly. The actual name is RME Fireface UCX. To avoid confusion, I'll update my spec list in my previous posts.

Are those drivers up to date?

Good question. The driver was fairly recent, but I've now installed the latest driver. Unfortunately, that did not solve the lagging / freezing problem.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Hi.

As my problems have got worse since the latest VPX 14 update I am still looking for ways to improve it but to date nothing I do is improving anything. There are definitely more than a few things about the way VPX 14 is behaving I can't explain or understand. Especially as they have downgraded their own expectations.

Improved: Optimized performance when using objects without "Size/Pos/Rotate" effect

I would laugh at that if I wasn't having such a bad experience. That's even within the core package and not a third party effect. They are much worse. So is altering Gamma. 😣😣😣😟🤬

Hi Ray

. . . . As my problems have got worse since the latest VPX 14 update . . . .

So far I am not seeing any lag issues with moving objects etc.

Assuming you are testing the 'Harry Potter' project I suspect that the high number of 'layers' and effects you have in that project is causing lag while processing the preview image - IIRC you had similar issues with the '2 minutes' projects intro and outros a while ago.

An indicator of this may be how long the preview processing/caching bar takes to get to 100% before playback actually starts.
