Video footage filmed on an iPhone looks ''washed-out colour'' | Help??

Apollo89x wrote on 10/21/2022, 12:36 PM

Hello, I've got 150 video files, which were filmed on an iPhone, uploaded onto (wetransfer), and then downloaded by me onto my Windows 10 laptop.

When I opened these videos (in a few different video players) on my computer though, the colour in all of them looks very ''washed-out''.
(The videos were all filmed outdoors, in sunshine | So I'm almost certain the raw footage on the phones looks perfect, not washed-out like this!)

I have tried:

  • Converting the files from .MOV to .MP4 | But the colour still remains washed-out.

  • Opening the videos in a few different video-editing programs (Windows Moview-Maker / Adove After-Effects / Magix Movie Edit Pro...
    (However in the first 2 programs the colour remained washed-out looking / In MEP the washed-outness is removed, but instead it becomes overly-saturated/over-contrasted colour-wise!)

Ultimately I have paid £3,000 cash for this footage (can't get a refund / nor can get any access to or info on the raw phone-footage, due to not being able to communicate with the person)...
But so would desperately love if anyone on here can help me find a method of how to make this iPhone footage just look ''normal / true to it's raw capture'', when accessing/editing it on my Windows laptop?

@Apollo89x

I suspect no-one will be able to really help you unless you are able and willing to make at least ONE of these files available to other users to download from a file-sharing site. If you do this, please remember to post the link here and make sure that downloading is not password-protected!

I am happy to do that | Although not sure why people would need a copy of the video itself?

My question was about the ''technical elements''...
As it seems that HDR iphone footage seems to not be compatible with any non-Apple software/on non-Apple devices, and thus this HDR footage is getting distorted when viewed in any video-editing programs on my Windows computer.

But so I just wondered if anyone knew any methods of how to fix this ''Apple iphone .MOV footage incompatibility issue''?

Hi

Download MediaInfo and analyse one of the 150 clips and post the results - see this tutorial on how to set up and get the data into the correct format for adding to a comment.

An educated guess would be that these video clips have been recorded in S-Log format.

Hi.

Any HRD footage should look washed out. It is a high dynamic range with deliberate low saturation and has to be colour graded / tone mapped. I would think if you have 150 files, unless they were taken in studio lighting conditions they may well need some individual tuning to match each other.

I don't have proper HDR files but do have a D-Cine-Like 'flat' profile footage which is a pseudo 8 bit version.

It is supposed to give a creator more individual control over the look of the finished footage.

In terms of solutions, the only workable one I have found so far is:

Get Premiere Pro | Import the footage into there | Change the ''Colour Space Overide tab'' to: Rec 2020 | Add on a 'LUT' which I discovered via this video: | And then export as MP4

*Whilst the footage is signficantly better via this method, it still looks abit over-saturated :: However as it's outdoors footage, I really really didn't want to start adjusting the saturation or contrast.

So wondered if there is any other methods to simply ''remove the HDR-ness from the raw footage''?

@Apollo89x

I think the problem is Movie Studio does not handle 10 bit files natively whereas VPX does.

Your shown MadiaInfo data.
