Using Soundforge 12 to rip sound from DVD playback?

Hi,

I just had to reinstall soundforge 12 on my windows 10 machine after doing a reinstallation of the Windows10 operating system.

Soundforge works fine with editing existing files, but i am unable to use the app to record wav files from DVD playback. I did try messing around with the parameters in the "audio" tab (particularly switching the _Audio Device Type_) found in the preferences area of the software. However despite that, it is still not possible to make sound recordings from dvd playback, although I know that it was quite easy to do before the reinstallation of windows10 happened.

Please advise!

What kind of material is on the DVD? It is usually possible to import media files directly.

Otherwise, If your wish to record 'what you hear'', some PCs have this ability.. some do not. I had two Toshiba Satellites that would not allow recording the soundcard output. All of my Dell PCs could.. Win 98 through Win 10). It is not a limitation of Sound Forge. There are utilities to allow this if your PC cannot record the soundcard output natively. Though i do not recall any URLs off-hand, so you may have to search.

In your PC's 'Record' sound settings, look for and enable "Stereo mix" (as it is called in Realtek cards) Then in the Sound Forge Device / Record settings, the "Mix" or "Speakers left and right options should be available in the device routing record parameters. (Options> Preferences> Audio", select the 'Record' tab.)

The record UI was changed starting with SF Pro 11:
- After initiating a 'new' timeline to record to, go to the "View> Record options" menu and make any parameter changes if so desired.
- Leave the "Record options" window open and select "Arm" from the transport (shortcut: Ctrl+ Shift+ A)
- Viewing the record level meters in the Record options window, make any necessary record level adjustments in the output device.
- Commence recording by selecting "Record" in the transport (shortcut: Ctrl+ R) .

Thanks for your reply. I upgraded to SFpro14 and then followed your instructions, with the same result: the software is successfully trying to record, but without any of the actual sound coming thru to be recorded (the recording waveform in SFpro14 showed a flat line). Also, I watched the PC's "record" setting while attempting to record, and noticed that the recording path was indeed set to 'Realtek audio // stereo mix' (it was green & enabled) but the "loudness bar" to the right of the icon on the recording tab did not show anything during playback. So it seems clear that the Realtek stereo path works fine with playback but not with recording, despite the fact that both recording and playback Realtek devices are enabled. Also, when looking at the "system volume" window, the media player and master volume channel both show the sounds of playback, but the soundforge line in that window shows no sound passing thru that channel. Lastly, I went out of my way to update the Realtek driver, rebooted the computer and tried recording again, but to no avail.

Additionally i tried to open the contents of the dvd (star trek TNG) in SFpro16, but the software couldn't "see" any of the files there, and hence there wasn't anything there that could be opened.

What do you suggest?

The DVD likely has some kind of copy protection, but that should not affect recording the soundcard's audio output. I think 'Video Redo' can open the DVD media files on a copy protected DVD.. though I not not totally sure.

If you are seeing the soundcard "Speakers" or 'Mix" output in the device routing, you may be missing a setting somewhere. Naturally the card's output volume controls the record level in SF.

Check the Windows Privacy settings as well, A recent Win 10 update locked out all recording sources going into Sound Forge and Vegas on my PC.

What kind of PC do you have? As I stated, my Toshiba PC's had Realtek soundcards but recording the output could not be done without a third-party app.

Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the windows privacy settings: that was the ticket; I had the 'microphone' settings to be completely off. Turning that main switch back on enabled SFpro14 to perform 'what you hear' recording.

How does one do "Video Redo"? I didn't see that in the pulldown menus.

@eric194814

"VideoReDo" is a separate app. See this page.

Yes, Video Redo is a separate app. I am not very familiar with Video Redo. The very knowledgeable "Musicvid" can probably answer any questions about it. Maybe query this over on the Vegas Pro forum or PM MV (Musicvid).
