I think we need a lot more information!

First, "just shut it off": what, the program, the computer?

Second, what is "EMPTY"? And what do you mean by "upper left"?

My suspicion is that you shut down your computer whilst MEP was still running/saving your project/attempting to close. In which case, regrettably it is almost certain that your project is corrupted and unusable.

However, if you have set the option to Autosave, if you check the folder where your projects are saved you should find a series labelled "(your project name).BAK_MV_". There could be up to 10 of them. You need to find the most recent one and try to open it. If that fails try the next oldest, and so on. Clearly, you will have lost any changes made subsequent to that usable version.

There is also a more than slim chance that, if you did shut down your computer whilst MEP was still running, it may have suffered some "damage" which will require at least a repair.
