How can I get 3 starting points to all end at the same destination? I need to animate the fact that people are traveling from different places in the country and all coming together in one location. I am using Movie Edit Pro Premium v.17.
. . . .How can I get 3 starting points to all end at the same destination? . . .
This is not possible with the Travel Route Animation - it is not sophisticated enough to do this, and AFIK there is no software that can create the effect.
A work around is to create one route, import this into MEP and then add and animated images of for example a car or plane to follow other paths to the destination using keyframes.
Note the workaround can be time consuming and may require you to create several images in png format with a transparent background.
It can be done in Vasco da Gama (Motion Studios), with up to 10 routes. I started one with 2 routes, 2 different planes, starting at slightly different times from very different locations, heading to the same destination. I did one with 2 cars starting from the same point at slightly different times (one behind the other), following the first car, to the same destination. Motion Studios had a tutorial with 3 simultaneous routes, but I can't find it.
You would probably need the Pro version to do this.
"...and AFIK there is no software that can create the effect."
Hi John,
I can think of two! 😉
As well as Vasco da Gama (resident expert John CB), there's Google Earth. I use that for most of my route animations because of its versatility. That would extend to multiple simultaneous routes, although so far I've had no need to do that.
Downside? Quite a learning curve, including occasional use of other tools to time-stamp routes prior to working in GE.
Of course, as usual the devil is in the details. For example:
Walk/drive/rail/plane? All the same or mixed? Simplistic (e.g. straight lines or simple curves), or realistic (following paths/roads/railway lines/flight paths)? Theoretical (e.g drawn manually or calculated by Google Maps) or actual GPS recordings? Symbols heading the way, or plain lines (solid/dashed/etc)? Animation timing realistic (showing relative journey times) or simple (e.g, with simultaneous or arbitrraily stepped arrivals)? Etc, etc.
As you say, even MEP could do the job with some key framing effort, supplemented by work in an image editor supporting layers.
Interesting, I never knew it could do simultaneous multiple starting point tracks to a single point, I will have to revisit it at some point in the future.
At the moment I use Vasco de Gama or roll my own if in the UK or Europe depending on what I need.
I used a straight white line 10 px thick and set two key frames for each route, at the start and end. It's rather fiddly and a fair bit of trial and error was involved, but if it's good enough for Michael Portillo's 'Great British Railway Journeys'... 😉
@terrypin that is exactly what I am looking for! Thank you! Could you provide a little more insight into how you accomplished that? I cannot figure out how to get google earth to animate the path I draw between my placemarks, (much less figure out how to make the font bigger on the placemarks). Sorry for all the questions, I am quite new at this, and I cannot find even a basic tutorial on youtube.
I didn’t use GE for that. (I’d use GE for more complex projects,) As mentioned, I did it by placing a KF at the end and then the start of each of the three routes. Try that and come back with any problems. I found it easiest to start by using Rotation to get the angle of the line set first, then defining the lengths and positions.
Or if it’s an urgent one-off, use the site’s PM facility to establish email contact to discuss details and I’ll try to make a video clip for you, like my example, over the next day or two.
How do you locate the travel route function. Looked in the edit menu under wizards and there is not option for it. Where can this be found? Is there an additional download?
First, can you confirm you have Movie Edit Pro, and if so, which exact version and variant? If you do have MEP but TRA is not showing for you as an option under Edit>Wizards I'm guessing you have the Basic version of the program.
So which variant did you buy? Basic, Plus or Premium? The advice here is always to go with the Premium version if you can afford it, though very often, albeit not currently, Premium is cheaper than Plus.
Given that you mention 2 versions that are the same price and having looked at the current web site offers, I assume you have bought Basic since it is listed at the same price as Plus. Did you also view this page, which compares the different variants, showing that TRA is NOT included in the Basic version?
However, since you purchased the app only 2 days ago you should be able to contact Magix Sales, via the email you received when you purchased, and ask that they allow you to "upgrade" to the Plus version, especially since, as you say, the price is the same.
Send an email to Magix sales via the email you received for downloading the program and tell them you accidentally ordered the wrong product. They should send a reply along the lines of please delete the program from your hard drive and reorder (buy) the correct version. After downloading and completing the install we can verify the new version and refund you for your previous purchase. Which is what I had to do after I purchased a wrong upgrade. You will have to delete any third party applications that came with that version beforehand as well.
