Transitions -- actual A/B instead of to/from black

MF.Laboo wrote on 3/5/2023, 10:35 AM

Using VP X 14 with a very low-level (one might say dumb) question, but this has been plaguing me and I can't find a specific tutorial online. When I try to apply a transition, I can't get it to do an actual A/B transition either between clips on the same track, or stacked clips. Instead, no matter what transition I use, the transition ignores the content of one of the clips and transitions into or out of black.

Typical example, I want to end the clip by transitioning from the video into a JPG. I butt them both up on the same track and drop a transition on top of them. When I play or render it, the transition effect works, but goes to black and I never see the JPG. I get the same results with video clips as well as JPGs, etc, and it never works any differently no matter how I mess with the transition params.

Is there a single correct way to do this, am I missing a key step beyond just drag-and-drop, is there something specific I'm doing wrong?

System: Dell 800 desktop, 8th gen i5, Win10, 32gb ram, integrated graphics card, Nothing the least bit unusual.

Hi.

Video clips must be overlapped on the same track to get a transition or the transition is only applied to one side. Do not butt join clips for this.

This is most easily controlled using the timeline view in the video editor.

Hi

. . . . Video clips must be overlapped on the same track to get a transition  . . . Do not butt join clips for this . . . .

  • For clips on same track - this would only apply to creating a crossfade by pushing one clip over the other.

If applying any transition from the transition selector icon on a clip they must be butted together if on the same track.

  • For separated clips, the transition effect required must be applied to the end/start of the stacked clips as shown, the clips being overlapped by the length of the transition as shown below:

    Note:

You have to manually create the fade Fade through Black transition where you put fade outs on both clips you should halve the length of each fade out/in for an equal timed transition. You can create asymmetric fade through black transitions if you wish.

With a manual fade out/in on clips that are not on the same track you cannot change the colour of the fade as in the Fade through black preset.

Thanks for the link and detailed info. I wasn't aware this process was the same in MEP and VPX. Very useful to know, I won't be so shy looking at MEP tutorials next time. I followed your steps successfully and am quite pleased with the results.

Hi.

VPX and MEP projects can be opened in either program (of same or close generation versions) and the settings stay intact unless then subsequently altered in either program as long as MEP can also handle the same file type. Workflow is almost identical but VPX just has way more options and in some instances finer control over some plugins.
