"Standardize" Audio Across All Video Clips on One Time Line

geo234 wrote on 12/11/2012, 6:53 AM

Each brief clip has spoken audio at different levels.  It's a really slow and inaccurate process to compare each one "by ear".  Is there a way to select all the clips and bring them way up in volume and just short of clipping (distortion)?  If not, what would be the best way to do this?

Hi

For me the easiest way would be to - Right click the audio portion of the clips and select Normalize - this will bring all the levels to a more even volume.

Note if the volume levels are very low you may introduce some 'noise' which you can try reducing by Right click the audio portion again and selecting the Audio cleaning option

You can the use the Mixer (M key) to control the overall track volume.

Hi

John's suggestion does exactly as you describe after selecting all (Edit Menu or shift+click). Shortcoming is as he mentioned - it will bring up background or fan or tape noise from the camcorder on really quiet clips. The thing there which is slightly annoying is that if you try to reduce the level with the handle in the middle of the clip, all the normalization on that clip gets removed and you can only get it back to the maximum that was available with the handle method, which is often not enough. Luckily applying a volume curve (rt click audio track) alows you to lower the level without resetting the Normalization.
