Soundforge recording in mono / one channel only

Hi, I just bought a focusrite Scarlett 3.0 usb interface, and when I went to record things into Soundforge audio studio ,the audio showed up in one channel only. I thought it may be because of an older version of soundforge (9 or something) so I upgraded to audio studio 14 and the same problem exists. This didn't happen with my old yamaha usb mixer, so I am wondering if it's the controls in the focusrite or something I need to alter in soundforge itself. Thanks for any advice

Do you use the correct audio cable?

+1 Make sure you're not using a monophonic audio cable.

Yes, I use a standard xlr cable for the mic and the USB cable that came with the unit. When attempting a recording with a bass guitar I am using a standard instrument cable. The conditions did not exist when using my old USB mixer. The cables have not changed.

The standard cables fir microphones and guitars are usually monophonic. Look up pictures with the differences between monophonic and stereo audio cables. You'll see that the phone jacks look different.

With your old mixer, the mono signal probably got routed to two channels. It sounds like that isn't happening with your Focusrite.

An older version of SF should not make any difference in this case.

Check the audio device settings in "Options> Preferences> Audio", in the Record tab settings, confirm the Scarlett interface left channel is assigned to SF Channel 1, the right, to SF Channel 2.

As was stated, you may not be using the correct cable for a stereo source.

btw, welcome to the Magix Sound Forge users forum @Tai-Hake.

So I figured it out finally once I had time to sit around and fiddle with it @rraud you were mostly correct here, and I thank you again for your insight. In Sound Forge Audio Studio 9 there is no "record tab" but what I had to do was set the recording device as "input 1" or "input 2" depending on which one I was using. The signal came in through both channels. In Sound Forge 14 it was as you said- on the recording tab i merely had to specify the input of the audio device, once I told it which one to use (Focusrite USB ASIO in this instance). I can get back to recording now. Woo!
