Handbrake is a video converter and does not work with audio files.

Hi John. I think @SSB wants to change the audio within the video file to another format. They are screen recordings from PS2 and PS3 consoles via a capture card that Movie Studio and even VPX are not reading the audio from although they play well enough in VLC. The media info data.

For some reason I thought we were dealing with a separate audio file. 🙁

I tried the Handbrake conversion to h.264 / AAC stereo and Handbrake identifies the audio as 'unknown' and treats it as 7.1 Surround Sound as MediaInfo says it is, however loading the original file into VPX - it does not recognize that it is multi-channel and has no audio. 😕

While the converted file does import into MMS 2023, I am getting some random crackling / muffled ticking in the first 2 mins of the clip and loss of audio for 12 secs at 33m 26secs with random clicking and/or muffled ticking - the audio waveform at this time indicates it should be loud enough to here clearly, however there is nothing but the random click/tick which sometimes appears other times not.

Rewrite of my deleted post:

AVIDemux will convert the 8 channels into stereo without re-encoding the video (ie fast):

Open the file then Audio Menu>Select Track>tick track 1.

On the left, at Audio Output, in the dropdown choose AAC (Lav)

On the Audio Configure button, set whatever bitrate you'd like

On the Audio Filters button, Main tab, choose Mixer>Remix>Stereo

Then, change Output Format to MP4 Muxer and Save As. The video won't be re-encoded and the audio will be saved as 2 channel L and R.

From your M4V, the crackles are in the recording; I get the same crackles in VideoRedo and Virtual Dub, as well as the same crackle when I start and stop playback in either MMS or VideoRedo.

If you want to keep your system clean, there is no need to "install" AVIDemux; download the "portable" version from here:

https://www.videohelp.com/software/AviDemux

Then just extract the Zip file (Windows right-click menu>Extract All) and run the EXE file in the extracted folder.

I have never used any of these types of programs but remember the spelling being different in your previous posts and I am curious as it seems to be a neat program.

I am not hearing any distortion of seeing any clipping of the waveforms when played in VLC. There are however frequencies and lower frequency synth sounds that could produce harmonic rattles in smaller audio drivers such as TV panel speakers or low wattage speakers that some people use as computer monitors. The little meter you see in the clip is my calibrated BBC PPM software monitoring meter which gives me left, right, combined mono and summed stereo power.

There is also the subject of the loud click when starting the clip or coming out of the player. That is being caused by only a half wave form being recorded at the start and end of a recording. This is what a normal sound wave looks like with peaks above and below the zero volt line.

This is what is happening when starting or stopping the clip. Starting.

Where it stops.

Something is wrong somewhere and could be another cause of distortions on playback for an audio transducer that does not have high power requirements and is a full range transducer. It looks like a capacitor discharge but in reality I have no idea. It could just be caused by a bad connection of a plug or a low voltage leakage. Either way it may only be a problem if clips are cross faded. Nothing is definite.

Hi John.

There is no permanent DC offset within the waveform I can see. Just that peak whenever the file is initiated or exited from. Whether this is caused by VLC playing the four tracks of audio that are recorded at once or not I'm not sure but it results in the last two waveforms you see in my post above where no negative voltage exists during the thumps.

Here is what I'm experiencing. Please excuse some of the delays of operation in the video.

I cannot reproduce that behaviour from any other video file I have using VLC player.

Thanks you guys. Yeah to describe it correctly. It’s probably an ocational thump, crackling and clicks. The electrical sound was gone after i tryed handbrake.

I’l follow the instructions. If I dont encode them. The videos get rather bad

Can you show images of the setup and a description of how you get the files from one device to another including any microphone and headphone setup, leads used from which outputs to what inputs, and any additional software or hardware involved as well as methods (audio mixing etc) to this topic please?

I have two desktop sounds and 1 for ps2 and 1 for ps3 in nebula Screen recorder.

i’ve reseted the settings already. I have an external hardrive. The thump and crackle is still there when basically just have screen recorder open. I use magix video pro 2014. And there’s the bass thump click thing when i close the screen recorder. Before i started recording the videos. I thought it was just something wrong with my speakers. So I ignored it.

Really did’nt help with the avidemux method. Wonder if I’m just going to fix the settings and record the game again.

I personally don't think that anything you are proposing to do is likely to solve your problem.

The thump you are hearing is happening at the recording preamp stage and most possibly from the connections from one device to another. Thumps like that almost always come from where the signal is weakest and gets amplified in the record chain. So a mismatch between the output of one device going into the input of another device. It could be an impedance or voltage mismatch or a combination of both. A powered mic where a passive mic should be used.

Examples

Using a microphone that uses an internal battery as opposed to one that gets its power from the device it is plugged into or has a weak signal.

A headphone output plugged into a line input with the volume set too high or too low. Ideally it should be a line out to line in. Never plug a line out into a mic input.

The other thing is your screen recorder. For whatever reason I can't get to either a download page for it or much in the way of getting to the setup instructions or even screen shots of it. The page I found in the link doesn't go into much detail and none of the links go to download pages. So I don't know how to guide you to a suitable setup for use with editing the output. Any help there could be useful. There may not be a suitable codec within the program to use for an editing package but I would assume for this purpose the 'Optimize for recording' option should be used. There seems to be no way I can see to export the audio to only two channels or mix volumes.

AFAICS the Nebula (previously called Nitro ?) Screen recorder has been removed from the Microsoft Store.

I also found this post that suggested the Nebula Screen Recorder was a rebadged version of OBS.

The issue could be in the audio chain from the PS2/3 to the PC - most likely suspect being the audio sockets used on the PS2/3 - the PS3 is upto 16 yrs old and the PS2 up to 22 yrs old - or PC and may be loose or worn.

Yeah! I was going to reinstall it. But it was gone from the store. I did’nt have an issue with this last year when i recorded ps3 on nebula. And ps2 works great when just playing on tv.

Capturing the sound depends on how you are capturing the video from the PS2.

If you are using a USB video grabber with yellow/red/white connector eg something like the one shown below

then you should be able capture both video and audio through the video grabber, with the correct AV cable ie yellow/red/white RCA connectors on one end and a Sony AV plug on the other.

If you are not using a video grabber, how are you capturing (recording) the video from the PS 2 ?
