sound interference when video overlay plays

bruce-clarke wrote on 7/1/2022, 1:57 AM

Hello everyone

Not been long using video editing to this level but Im having a problem with sound interference ( sounds like radio interference) when my video overlay starts to play then interference stops when overlay is finished. My earier videos did not have this interference and now interference is just there. My settings have not changed.

Anyone help me please.

@bruce-clarke

Hi Bruce and welcome to the user to user forums.

The problem with adding more material to additional tracks within any video editor is mainly the way audio has to be handled to stay in sync with the video footage. This involves 'blocks' of audio being loaded temporarily into a buffer memory ready to be synced to the frames being rendered in real time when either playing back in the program of during export. The more tracks in the timeline editor, the more memory has to be allocated to the systems memory to be ready in time for use when needed.

Because of this there is adjustment available within the programs menu.

Within Movie Studio (or whichever version of the program you have) go to.

File / Settings / Program / Playback where you will find the audio buffer and sample rate adjustment options.

You can either increase the amount of audio buffer up to a maximum of 9 or alter the audio sample rates in double amount increments.

These alterations are not without some disadvantages which on the whole should be minor and mainly effect the delay between using playback controls before the program responds or delays in the audio mixer controls when in use. There is a relationship between the settings and sometimes altering just one of them by one increment is enough in that project to avoid the sounds you are hearing.

Generally speaking adjusting the amount of samples in one block (Buffer number) is enough to reduced the audio clicking you hear but may not be. That method tends to produce less lag than adding additional buffers but it can be a balancing act to get best performance of audio quality vs lag.

I would personally recommend not to use the Direct sound option over the Wave driver option.

Other considerations should also be considered.

If you are importing separate audio tracks what is their bit depth and sampling frequencies?

Remember that the final rendered video will not be exporting audio beyond 16 bit or 48kHz.

Therefore any wav file loaded into the program above those parameters will need additional buffer memory beyond what is essentially needed and may result in unnecessary buffer / sampling rate alterations.

That worry does not normally apply to imported video clips that normally stick to normal conventional audio bit and sample rates.

Generally I also keep my computers audio settings to 24 bit 48kHz as a maximum for good measure but that is optional and possibly me being a bit overcautious.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . my video overlay starts to play then interference stops when overlay is finished.. . . .

If the buffers size change does not fix the 'interference' noise, can you clarify what you mean by video overlay and post a screenshot of the timeline showing that section where the 'overlay' is, for clarity click the small square top right of the timeline pane to make it full screen before taking the screenshot

Click the same icon after taking the screenshot to return to normal.

It would also help if you put your computer specification in your Profile, Signature - see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with if it is a laptop - see my Signature as an example.

Hi Ray

Thanks for your help, I will try looking at those settings though I don't know why the problem just suddenly started without any changes.

I certainly hope I can solve this interference as I find this video overlay really works well with my videos.

Again thanks for your input Ray.

Hi

Well Im back to my problem with interference in my video, I have tried changing settings in magix settings to no avail.

Its just strange how my first 2 videos dont have this problem when doing picture in picture....nothing has changed in my laptop though I did have a problem with computer being very slow when using magix software so I did do some speeding up computer settings via instruction video by kevin stratvert on youtube so I can get more use of my ram and this really helped the flow of magix software.

Hmmm....I did have a situation with my microphone that I bought to do voice over in my vids and i could not get the mic to work, the headphones work but not the mic. I looked at updating the realtek drivers as I was getting no settings to configure microphone in windows 10. One thing led to another and found myself updating some update from realtek website and low and behold my headphones stopped working too arrrgh.

I manage to uninstall this update but my sound still nackered.....I was now at the end of the road to know what to do to fix this and I went for the windows rescue thing where windows 10 gets a reinstall. You know what...it worked and both my mic and headphone works.

I reinstalled magix and all my other stuff and did the kevin stratvert thing make computer go faster and yes my computer runs like a dream...I only have 6gb ram and with magix running my ram measures about just short of the red line.

So this brings me back to my still current situation with magix, thats where my first post came in after all that above story.

Is it crazy to ask why am I still getting interference when picture in picture is used. I could add that the software Im using is the new version 2022 where as the other version was a 2021. I now forget just exactly when interference started, did it start in 2021 addition or was it 2022 addition.

I know ,clear as mud but can anyone help.....

Bruce

p.s sorry for the long winded story but I hope you enjoyed all the same....

@bruce-clarke

Hi Bruce

. . . . I know ,clear as mud but can anyone help.... . . . .

The issues are in there somewhere! 😂

They are:

. . . . did the kevin stratvert thing make computer go faster . . . .

Have you re-applied the 'fixes' from the video?

If so and you set the Windows Graphics setting to performance for Movie Studio (MMS) - undo it. The setting is not necessary and may cause issues as MMS will try to override the settings with the GPU specified in the Program Settings, Device options tab, Import, Processing and Export options.

. . . . I only have 6gb ram and with magix running my ram measures about just short of the red line.. . . . I still getting interference when picture in picture is used . . . .

The low RAM is probably the cause of the issues with the Picture in Picture (PiP), MMS needs more RAM for more complex items such as PiP and is causing a lot of disk activity as it moves data in/out of RAM to the hard drive. Although the specs say 4GB of RAM minimum, this is the minimum the program will run on and does not guarantee good performance, particularly with higher resolution video files.

There a possibility of other causes of the issues for which we need to know your computer specification - see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) your are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Are the graphics card drivers up to date?

A screen shot of the Program settings, Device options tab  would help.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the video clips in the Picture in Picture and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

@bruce-clarke

Hi

Thanks for the MediaInfo data and computer specs.

There is one question both @CubeAce and I did not ask, though Ray alluded to it, is the 'interference' present in the exported video?

If not, the problem you are having, particularly with picture in picture is most likely the laptop is struggling with real time processing the video and audio for playback.

Unfortunately the laptop is technically below the minimum specification required for MEP 2022, for MEP 2021 it sounds like it was working OK.

However it may be possible to improve the playback and eliminate the 'interference'.

Check that you have the following settings set:

  1. In the Project setting the Automatically create proxy files is checked, this will create smaller resolution versions of the original files for use while editing, when you export or create a disc the original files will be used. Note: these proxy files will take up additional disc space, however once the project is finished and exported or disc created you can delete the proxy files - they will be in the same folder as the original video. Should you go back to the project at a later date they will be recreated.

  2. The lightning symbol bottom right of the Preview monitor is turned on ie coloured blue, if not click it, this will further help preview playback be a bit smoother.

  3. The HD 4000 cannot be used by MEP 2022 for hardware acceleration. In the Program settings, Device Options tab the Import, Processing and Export options are set to CPU or Microsoft Warp if available - you may need to experiment which gives the better performance.
