Welcome to the Sound Forge forum@Anne-Harrigan.

I have more question than answers.

  • So... SF opens normally but will not play an audio file?
  • Does the cursor, time and meters indicate any playback activity?
  • Any error messages?
  • Have you tried different file types, specially try PCM WAVE <.wav> files?
  • What soundcard or D/A interface do you have?
  • Have you tried changing SF's playback device type? "Options> Preferences> Audio > Audio Device Type> Playback" Try 'Windows Classic Wave Driver' or 'Sound Mapper'
  • In the same menu, is device type playback routing set to your soundcard?

Hi rraud, thank you for your questions. Answers (and solution!) in italics.

So... SF opens normally but will not play an audio file? - Yes. Not only that, but I can do thinks like cut and paste.

Does the cursor, time and meters indicate any playback activity? Nothing indicates any playback activity. I have tried from the beginning of the file and starting in different spots.

Any error messages? No error messages.

Have you tried different file types, specially try PCM WAVE <.wav> files? I have tried mp3, aiff, wav, flac, and m4a files. Play, fast forward and rewind do not work. However, cursor to beginning and end do.

What soundcard or D/A interface do you have?

Have you tried changing SF's playback device type? "Options> Preferences> Audio > Audio Device Type> Playback" Try 'Windows Classic Wave Driver' or 'Sound Mapper' Eureka!!! There was nothing selected. I had two options and neither was selected. When I selected Speakers, it worked fine.

In the same menu, is device type playback routing set to your soundcard?

You're made my day! Thank you so much for replying.
