Sound Forge 15 will not recognize audio signal from Asus laptop comput

I am using Sound Forge 15 on my new Asus laptop computer using windows 10. Sound forge will not recognize an audio signal from computer when playing an audio file with vlc player or a youtube video. I am playing all audio though my headphone port to my speakers. No matter how I setup input and output I can't get Sound Forge to recognize an audio signal. I had Sound Forge 10 originally loaded on this computer, but same outcome. I thought maybe Sound Forge 10 was not compatible with Windows 10 so I downloaded the new Sound Forge 15. I am lost at what to do next; would appreciate some help. Thank you.

@Vic-Butler Have you allowed Sound Forge to be able to record audio? You can do this in the Windows security settings:

If your computer has an Realtek audio chipset you usually need to check if Stereo Mix is enabled as a recording device in the Windows sound settings to be able to record audio from your computer.

'Some 'PCs allow "recording what you hear" natively, some do not,. All my Dell PCs allowed it.. OTOH, I had two Toshiba Satellites that could not without a third-party utility...
As I recall "Record what you hear" was originally a term used on the old Sound Blaster cards. On many Realtek cards, it is refereed to as "Stereo mix" (as @SP. stated) so if that is what you have,there are settings to 'record what you hear'.
-  Open up "SOUND settings (some PCs differ some)
- Open on the "Recording" Tab
- Right click anywhere in the white area of this list
- Click "Show Disabled Devices" in sub-menu should appear
- Select "What you hear" or "Stereo Mix" or similar option. Select "Enable"
- Stereo mix must be selected in SF's audio device "Options> Preferences> Audio" (Device type Record) settings

Another option is using VB-CABLE, which is a virtual audio device cable. All audio coming to the input is routed to the output. https://vb-audio.com/Cable/

You can also download from YouTube. Open the file in Sound Forge and

SP and RRaud, thanks for your suggestions on trying to get Sound Forge 15 to recognize my audio signal. No luck yet. I have spent about 9 hours on this problem. I think I'm going to take this computer to a shop and see if they can find a way to record streaming audio. I have 2 desktops that I have never had an issue. This is the first laptop I have ever had. The only outlet port for audio is the headphone jack and I play thru it to my speakers for a good sound. But, it will not let the audio signal to the Sound Forge. The stereo mix option Rraud talked about was not on my options list. I downloaded a codec from Realtek to get "stereo mix" , but my headphone option would disappear. So I couldn't go thru my headphone jack to my speakers. I could still get audio to my laptop speakers and my monitor speakers, but still would not let Sound Forge detect a signal. Sound thru monitor and laptop speakers suck. Anyway, to get my headphone jack recognized again I had to download the latest drivers again. Then, the "stereo mix" would disappear. Sound Forge will let me edit a previous recording but will not let a new recording happen.

This laptop was supposed to be dedicated for music recording and editing, but I'm not so sure now. I wish I would have bought another desktop; still might. Thank you both for trying, I appreciate that.
