Sound Forge 11 reinstall

MusicFan007 wrote on 12/10/2017, 8:50 AM

I previously reported a SF11 issue with not finding the desktop where music files were put. Received helpful suggestions, thanks. Turns out a Windows 10 update corrupted some system files (tech's best guess) and the fix required all third party software to be wiped from my system. I took down all license and registration information, but a visit to the MAGIX site seems to only give me the option to buy a new copy. I've reinstalled Total Recorder, which now works fine; I'm hopeful a SF 11 reinstall will do the same. Advice and suggests on how to reinstall with all registration information in hand please. Thanks in advance.

Hi.

I can't offer any advice on your core question of suggestions to help towards reinstalling SF11, but I would like to offer some advice about the fact that you store music files on the desktop: in one word, don't!

It is never a good idea to store any kind of data file on your computer desktop; as you've discovered, Windows Updates, indeed any changes to your system files, even System Restore, can seriously detriment your desktop and any files which are not a core part of your operating system. It is always best practice to store ANY data files, which your music files essentially are, on a separate drive or partition (if available); if not, then most certainly not in any folder/directory which is shared with the operating system.

BTW, I feel your pain about having to reinstall everything from scratch. I've just about completed the complete reinstall of my system following, for me, something corrupting Windows, necessitating as a first stage, reinstalling Windows itself.

Yes, Win 10 updates seems to F__ up SF regularly it seems, typically the 'Elevated Privilege' issue.

If you wish to reinstall, first uninstall SF with a third-party uninstaller (Revo's for instance) which removes the leftover registry entries that a Win uninstall leaves behind.

Download the latest SF Pro 11 build (345 as I recall) here: https://www.magix.com/us/support/my-service-center/product-downloads/ . You will need your serial number to download and of course to re-register.

Yes, Magix seems to hide things, so if you son't know where they are.. good luck (sort of like traveling in New Jersey).

Thank you both for your comments. Jeff: I understand your note, I'll just say that having the files visible keeps me moving them along to CDRs within a week or so of recording. Out of sight, out of mind, as they say. rraud: The link worked and the system is installed. It works but new error messages: one that there was a "Failure to Bind to MS Common Language Runtime. Scripting Host failed to start up," and a second about being low on memory. In both cases the music loaded onto an editing panel just fine. Thoughts?

Happy to report that a clumsy google search turned up a posting on a Magix UK forum that described the same problem and provided a detailed fix, which even I could follow, and which has removed that silly error message. So problem solved. In case anyone wants to check it out, here's a link:

Again, thanks to emmrecs and rraud for pitching in to help with the reinstall question.
