@CubeAce Yes. I think the really problematic point is that perpetual licenses won't get any updates. Does that mean if you buy a buggy version of Video Pro X you won't get any bug fixes? Or is does this just mean that you don't get any new features? This wouldn't be such a problem.

I personally think that subscriptions can be fine if they are done correctly (rent-to-own for example). Sadly, most companies are only having subscriptions that run for at least a year or alternatively super expensive monthly subscriptions which raises costs for hobbyists by a lot. If I use a software just five or six times a year it would be much better if there was the possibility to get a 24 hour license for 2 or 3 dollars.

But the idea behind most subscriptions is that you cannot buy a version and use it for many years before upgrading to the next one or selling it on the second hand market.

If you go to the info pages it states you will get the updates for a year as you do now but no upgrade offers. No keeping old plugins in the new version as I read it. Not sure if you get the option to keep both versions.

But if anyone opted for the subscription service then the releases had better be completely usable from the word go.

Hi Ray,

There are presently subscription possibilities for Samplitude Pro X and Vegas. The user has a choice to purchase the "perpetual" program or to subscribe. With the perpetual program, you get patches and sometimes new features that didn't quite make the initial release.

Here is the subscription for Samplitude - called ProX 365.

Here it is for Vegas Pro 365.

Note that for both, you can purchase the "perpetual" version but there is no Update Service.

According to what you show, Magix will be extending a subscription service for more of its products. I expect the same thing - Magix will continue to offer the products with the "perpetual" license. Whether or not they will continue with the Update Service remains to be seen. Samplitude and Vegas were never under the Update Service.

Of course, should Magix eliminate the current method, then...

You can continue to use your previously purchased versions as before, of course. If you have an Update Service for your software, you will receive all new features and updates until this expires. However, renewing your Update Service is now no longer possible, so your entitlement to further updates ends when your Update Service expires.

That's normal for a subscription service. Also read any contract very carefully for penalties and requirements for ending a contract.

As usual, Magix got ahead of itself, didn't think everything through, and is still offering the Update Service.

The advert explains why this came about:

"What's the difference between the subscription service and the Update Service? In addition to up-to-date software, many of our customers want us to provide them with access to creative content and new opportunities for collaboration. With this in mind, we have built upon the existing Update Service concept to offer a new subscription format that delivers the latest technology and content."

Does anyone recall seeing all of those customers requesting "access to creative content and new opportunities for collaboration" (whatever that means)? One request?

We have access to creative content; we can buy it through the Store.

Reality - the Update Service did not work out as planned. People did not renew when there was no compelling reason to renew. Magix was unable to come up with new features to be issued every few months (quarterly); they are promising this with the Subscription but I doubt that they will be able to do so in the future based on their past performance. So, Magix is trying to get a consistent revenue stream by offering a subscription service, that is all.

"access to creative content" or "With high-quality video and audio content" I expect means that one will have free access to everything in the Store, except for any third party plugins that are not part of the subscription (or maybe some or all will be included?). Maybe.

"...and helpful tips and tricks from experts, you'll be able to get the most out of each and every project – at no extra cost" means what? The only "experts" or expertise that Magix has shown is by us here on the forum.
