shortcut for cutting from an audio project

karimsisi wrote on 7/6/2015, 1:31 PM

Hello,

Imagine I have a 10 second audio clip, and want to delete or cut from second 5 to 8 and have the remaining audio move forward, fill in the gap, and merge. How could I do that?

I currently split at second 5 and 8 creating three objects, delete the middle object, and then manually move the latter object to become adjacent to the earlier object. Alas, I can't find a merge command. I am using Audio Cleaining Lab 2016 (not premium).

Hi,

There is no need to "merge" the objects and it cannot be done. ACL, like most of the other audio and video editing programs is basically non-destructive, meaning that it does not touch your original files (careful, there are exceptions). Basically, the project is just a series of commands that the program remembers. The final product is what you export. When you export to a wmv or mp3 file, everything is "merged." Thus, the project is not the final product and will always remain editable.

In ACL, the program has to remember which file you loaded, that you cut out a piece, that you moved a piece to a different location, that you added in a piece of another file, that you added this effect and that effect, etc., and it has to apply them live. Again, the exported file is the final result.

Do a test. Delete the right hand piece that you left in. Now drag out the bottom right handle of the piece that you left in. Everything is still there and always will be.

ACL does not import the original recording into the project file (VIP) itself and then modify it. It only uses the original recording; it remembers the name and location of the file. Thus if you import an audio file into ACL, save the project (VIP), close ACL, and then delete the original file thinking that you don't need it anymore, and then reopen the ACL project (VIP), ACL won't be able to find the file that you deleted and your project will not work. And you will not be happy.

Sorry to go on, but it seems that many users do not understand how these programs works.

Thanks for the clarificatin about the merging not being necessary :)

What about a shorter method of removing a clip in the middle without haing to create two splits; just select and cut or delete?

Hi,

Normally yes, but the commands don't work properly in 2014 Premium. Try the ones below to see if they work in 2016. Check in the manual for these. If they don't work right, raise a ticket with Magix support.

Split
A selected object is split into two objects at the position line. This also works during playback.

Keyboard shortcut: T

Remove object beginning
This command removes the part of an object beneath the position line, chronologically located before the position line. The audio material following it is moved forward to the initial position. (Doesn't work for me - it deletes and leaves a gap)

Keyboard shortcut: Z

Remove object end
This command removes the part of an object beneath the position line, chronologically located after the position line. The audio material following it is moved closer. (Doesn't work for me - it deletes and leaves a gap)

Keyboard shortcut: U

Delete
The currently selected object will then be deleted from current project. The subsequent objects are moved forward so that there is no gap in the track. (Doesn't work for me - it deletes and leaves a gap)

Keyboard shortcut: Del

Cut
The selected object is cut out from the project and placed on the clipboard. It can then be reinserted elsewhere.

Keyboard shortcut: Shift + Del

Thanks browj2.

The steps you described work perfectly. Nevertheless, the developers of ACL should have made it as simple as select and delete; two steps only instead of around five steps. If my memory serves me right, it was simple as that with Audacity when I used a couple of years ago. I'll do as you said and raise this issue with customer support.

This answer is a reference for any future beginners such as myself.

After reading browj2's answer and reading the help of AUDIO AND MUSIC LAB 2016 PREMIUM (A&MLP), I discovered that there is not a short way of deleting a clip. The help clearly states that I must split the portion to be deleted by separating it into a separate object and then deleting that object.

Moreover, I wanted the remainder of the track to move forward and fill in the gap created due to deleting this object, but could not find it in AUDIO CLEANING LAB (ACL). It is, however, present in A&MLP and it is called RIPPLE.

I have come to the conclusion it is better to read the help of A&MLP than the help of ACL because A&MLP contains more features and the help explains these features, while the help of ACL fails to mention the presence of those features present in A&MLP but absent in ACL. A beginner needs all the help and clarifications he can get.

Good find!

In AML 2014 Premium, the manual shows buttons for these but they do not appear on the screen. One has to search for the commands under Options. Turning on Ripple mode makes the Z, U and Shift+Del buttons work properly.

In ACL2013, there was no ripple, but there were mouse modes. It seems that Magix has been changing these things around from one version to the next.

I would like to have these buttons on the screen like they have in Movie Edit Pro. And it would be nice if the shortcuts were the same in each program for the same function. Delete and close the gap is Shift+Del in AML but only in Ripple mode (should not need to go into Ripple mode); the shortcut is Ctrl+Del in Movie Edit Pro.

Are the commands in ACL or AML 2016 the same as I have described here?

I notice that in the manual, under Splitting objects, Magix has an error and indicates using the key D to remove object beginning instead of Z. This was probably the shortcut in ACL2013 (it is in the manual as D) and was changed to Z in 2014. They have it correct under the definitions later in the manual and I suspect that this change was to bring the shortcuts closer in line with the other products. As well, they don't mention turning on Ripple when they give the tip to use the shortcuts; they should.

It pays to read the manual - thoroughly - for each version.

Thanks again for finding that.

No they are not. I tried Shift+Del while Ripple was off, and the latter object did not move forward to fill the gap.
