SF Pro 11 overriding audio card sample rate

noisywan wrote on 10/24/2018, 7:35 AM

Hi there!

I'm using SF Pro 11 on Win 7 with ESI Julia sound card.
All audio apps are set to use Windows Sound Mapper and all playback/recording rates are set to 48k.

When I run Sound Forge, it switches system audio sample rate down to 44.1k.

It does that even another app is using the audio card for playback.

I've set all engine sample rates to 48k using Sound Forge internal settings but it did not help.

No matter what I try, SF swithes to 44.1k during app startup, when it displays it's splash screen.
I can see it on the mixer display and hear the pitch down effect on the playback.

I've also tried ESI ASIO  and ASIO4ALL drives and it still overrides.

Is there a way to prevent SF overriding audio card settings? (The switches on Windows Audio panel to prevent apps changing card settings doesn't work at all)

EDIT:

* The OS is 64bit Win 7

* ESI drivers are up to date.

* SF 11 build is 299

Have you tried 'Windows Classic Wave Driver'? Does this happen with all file formats/codecs?  With video or audio only?
I'm not familiar with the ESI Julia sound card, but I would try setting it to 48k.. an option I see in the screenshot. Try changing the Windows audio settings to playback @ 48k as well.
Otherwise, the ESI sound card could be locked to playback at 44.1. This once happened to me with an Echo Mia card.
Does the internal or integrated sound card playback without issue?

BTW, you can temporarily change the PB sample rate;'right-click the sample rate at the bottom right of timeline.

Thank you for your response Rick. (summary: not solved the problem)

+ Have you tried 'Windows Classic Wave Driver'?
- Yes. SoundForge switches to 44k no matter what driver is being used.

+ Does this happen with all file formats/codecs?
- SoundForge app starts without opening any files so it's not about files. The audio sample rate is set to 44.1k during loading, even before the GUI window appears on the desktop.  ESI mixer window displays the current sample rate set by apps using the audio card. (Please see the screen cap above, with the ESI Mixer over Sound Forge Splash screen. That's the exact point when the 48k flips to 44.1k.)

+ With video or audio only?
- No files are needed to be open to experinece this issue.
Consider that you are listening to music on with WinAmp and you clicked on Sound Forge icon. As soon as the app starts, the music you are listening to drops down to 44k and you hear the pitch change. No files are opened in SoundForge at all.
SoundForge Pro 11 overrides the Windows Audio Settings and changes it to 44k for no apparent reason.

- Those are indicators (display only), not buttons or switches, therefore it's unable to control the sample rate with that ESI interface. ESI window is displaying the sample rate that is set by Windows Audio Settings. I can change it via "Window Sound Panel / Playback / Advanced / Default Format " menu that is accessed via taskbar.

+ Otherwise, the ESI sound card could be locked to playback at 44.1. This once happened to me with an Echo Mia card.

- No issues with other apps. It's just SoundForge Pro 11 switching to 44 for no apparent reason. I tried using the deep switches with no luck (see cap above)

- Thanks for the tip I didn't know that.

Actually I can set sample rate of Windows Audio Driver back to 48k by hitting Record button. It switches back to normal as soon as recording commences.
The problem is; I just want to prevent SoundForge from changing sample rate of my audio device to 44k whenever I run it.

Sorry, can't think of any other reason off-hand.. Did you say you tried changing the default new window setting to 48k?" You could try clearing the VST FX plug-ins search folders. "Options> Preferences> VST"

You could resetting all SFP 11 settings to factory default. "Ctrl+Shift" when opening" SFP 11).. or uninstall/reinstall SF11 all together with a third-party uninstaller, like Revo's Uninstall, which removes leftover SF-11 registry entries that are normally left behind by the Window uninstalls. Then reinstall the latest build of SFP 11 or try the SFP-12 demo.

If all else fails contact MAGIX Tech Support, but they may say it's a sound card issue. IF you find a solution, please update us.

Thanks Rick, I have contacted Magix and they have forwarded this issue to their developers team. I'll keep you updated.
