Hi, I can't seem to select multiple objects to split from stereo into mono, I have to select one section of audio at a time which takes forever, highlighting all of them results in only the first section of audio getting split, any help with this at all ? many thanks, Warren

Hi.

You should be able to right click any stereo track and select split into 2 mono tracks..

Ah! Then a couple of extra steps starting with the Edit tab at the top are needed after you select your first audio object.

which should produce the next box.

I selected range as some of my project files were mono and it would not then work. You then get this, an Altered HDP file.

Then you should produce a file that looks like this

Which has joined all the audio tracks. Not sure what happens if there are gaps in the audio along the timeline.

Then proceed as before.

You'll have to select all. ungroup using the chain at the bottom of the preview window, then duplicate the audio by selecting the audio, click & hold the ctrl while dragging them down to the track below, then you can choose Left or Right ,

Bit of a pain 🤷‍♂️

CubeAce wrote on 10/11/2022, 7:00 AM

Once all tracks are separated all pan controls should be centered and the export should be mono. Do make sure when the files are brought to be mono that the audio doesn't peak above 0dbm as you could get a 3db surge in volume.

Hi,

Is there a way to export in mono sound? there is an option in the advanced tab but its grayed out

Why would you want to do that? As far as I know, it can't be done. I'm not even sure that an MP4 can have mono - I think that it has to have stereo.

If I see it correctly, the option that is greyed out is Stereo or Surround, not Mono. You cannot use Surround with the indicated MP4 formats, but can with AVCHD. There is no Mono.

Mono is just stereo with identical left and right channels. When you use the command to "Split stereo objects into mono objects" you actually get the left channel onto left and right, and the right channel onto left and right for the object. That is mono.

To see this, Solo the track with the left channel and watch the Mixer meter. You'll see the indicator on both channels go up to the same level - that is what mono is. Now, turn the pan knob completely to the left and play back; you'll see only the left indicator showing.

@Former user @warren-Loomes

If you need to split all or even a range of objects onto left and right tracks, then do as @CubeAce indicated - Shift+D to get the wave file, then split that into left and right. Of course, this will give you an object that is not split with the video objects. If you have to then edit the video objects (trimming), then you will have to also split, group and join the audio part(s) to follow. Since we don't know exactly what you are doing or why, we can't give you a proper work flow.

I just posted a new tutorial on doing a mixdown (Shift+D) on YouTube.

@browj2 Phones record in mono but it's saved as stereo, this image is one of my phone clips using the built in microphone, I tend to destroy the microphone or something in the phone (microphones for noise cancelation 🤷‍♂️) recording noisy power tools, you can see the wave is identical except the right channel is lower, doing what I suggested & only using one side for both channels exports as stereo, ie you get the same volume left & right when playing back the exported vid.

I bought a new wireless microphone that plugs in the bottom of the phone, this is how it looks in the editor, we'll have to see if I destroy this one too.

I don't know if this is what the OP is experiencing.

Hi John.

Depending on the encoder video files can be exported with just one audio track.

Both produced by VPX 12.

Admittedly not overly used formats but possible. Some conference programs we have seen on the forum have also produced such files.

Hi Gid.

Is it possible you have noise canceling enabled on the phone. The second track could be a track to cancel out some of the noise in the left track by inversion of some of the frequencies at a lower level.

@Former user

Hi,

Your last image shows different wave forms, so something is happening there to cause this.

What do you see in the Mixer meter when you play back the audio? Are the left and right indicators always moving together?

I looked up about cell phones and found this comment:

The sound is mono for calls for 95%+ of phones.
However most phones have 2-4 mics for noise cancelation and some phones can do stereo sound for videos with noise cancelation.

Is @warren-Loomes using a cell phone? I somehow doubt it.

I have an M-Audio M-Track for recording and can record in stereo to left and right channels. So, I can have 2 mics, one for each person, or say, a mic and a guitar. Recording in stereo, one goes to the left channel, the other to the right. I would then use 'Split stereo objects into mono objects' and treat each separately - volume adjustement, audio cleaning and effects, then panning for positioning. The sound should always come from both speakers, panning a bit gives the positioning effect. This is why I would want to separate the left and right. I presume that the OP has something similar.

When I record only 1 mic with the M-Track, I record in Mono to VPX or whatever. However, that still gives left and right, just that both are the same. If I accidently record in stereo, then I only get the audio on the left or right channel and have to make both channels the same, left or right to get mono.

What mic did you buy for your cell phone. I have an iRig Cast. Haven't used it much.

@browj2 I disagree they're different waveforms, they're just different levels,

Played without any adjustment the two indicator bars don't move together, they move as you would expect looking at the track wave

'Split stereo objects into mono objects' is new to me, Ms/MEP didn't have that so i'll need to play with it & see,

I haven't had this phone mic long but it's doing ok so far, https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09XV4NVK9/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi Gid.

Using the speaker phone can start noise canceling to prevent feedback from between the speaker and microphone being in close proximity to each other and at volume. Wind reduction settings do pretty much the same thing. What happens if you mix the two sound sources to mono without altering levels?

Do you hear a difference of tonality?

@CubeAce @browj2 I've only had VPX for a few wks & have hardly touched it, for the last 18mths or so I've been playing with Vegas, Export/render is slower than MEP/MS, playback with transitions often needs a few loop plays to get up to full fps & it crashes a lot, mainly with added effects, so a little while ago I returned to MEP/MS to edit my simple videos that only need cutting & a 12frame crossfade. MEP/MS will play back UHD clips with transitions at full res full fps no prob & adding a 12frame crossfade to all is simple, but I wanted a good editor to play with my Boris plugins so I bought Adobe AE & for the last couple wks I've been learning how to use that.

So all my info on this is based on MEP/MS, my old phone's left channel was blank, it was empty, using the option Both channels = Right worked fine & i didn't notice any lack of sound tone etc..

This phone I've knackered also but there does seem to be some audio on the right so maybe VPX's Split stereo objects into mono objects might be a better solution, but same again when I use Both channels = Right I don't notice any lack of sound tone,

My phone camera options are limited, I can't find any controls for noise, wind etc.. I'll have a deeper look tho,
