Search tool bug

terrypin wrote on 8/23/2012, 11:03 AM

I sent the following via the Feedback link on 21 August, 2012.

--------------------

The Search tool appears to be broken when used in the Forum section. (And possibly in other sections of the site too - I haven't checked.)

For example, when I tried a search using 'choppy' with a scope of 'All areas', I got only 2 hits. Yet the same search in the Q&A section gave 13 hits. (Whether even that is the accurate number of all posts on the entire site containing the word 'choppy' is another matter, but 13 is a lot better than 2.)

--------------------

The issue arose from this thread
http://www.magix.info/uk/jerky-playback.-movie-edit-pro-17.forum.804348.html
I occasionally gripe about posters not using this valuable tool, so I'm embarrassed to find that it's not reliable!

Can others confirm this problem please.

Good morning Terry

Using the search term choppy I only get 3 hits no matter which area I choose.

If I use the term jerky I get initially 10 hits, then as I go through the categories I get 63 hits, then if I go back to the first search for jerky I get 63 instead of the 10 I got the first time.

This s a strange behaviour!

John

Here's a side issue emerging from this:

I'm no web design expert, so maybe this is commonplace? But I can't see why on earth Magix.info needs to permanently store tens of thousands of search results, including those returning zero hits?

Hi Terry

This is not commonplace.  I think there is something wrong with the search algorithm.

Normally a search algorithm should search for the entered terms as follows:

Let us say the search term is choppy dvd playback

1.  All words in order specified  ie choppy dvd playback

2.  All words in any order ie  all three words in any order of combination

3.  Any combinations of words  ie any two words in any order

4. All single words in the search term

These can be modified using various characters eg Googles are here

Interestingly I cannot find the forum help pages on the subject of using the search function!!
