Screenshots ... has this happened to anyone else?

Kami_1 wrote on 7/20/2013, 10:24 PM

(Movie Edit Pro MX [18]; Win7-64 bit)

I wanted to trim a couple of screenshots in the mp4 format.  One is 7 minutes, the other 11 minutes.  When I imported each (separately) into MEP, I had only 1-1/2 minutes of each.  I tried it with importing from within MEP and dragging the files from Win Explorer.  Any mp4 screenshot 1-3/4 min. or less imports in full.  I also tried it with a wmv screenshot file... same limitation.

Any explanation why this happens?

I downloaded Windows Movie Maker and had no problem importing and trimming the two files.

Hi Kami

Do any other files from the same source have this problem?

This could be a known issue with some mp4 source devices using a non-zero timestamp base  from which the file duration is calculated based upon the timestamp of the last sample, which could be an arbitrary large number or the file header is corrupt.

Check the video file with GSpot or MediaInfo to see if the reported file length is correct.

You could try converting the video file to another format using Batch conversion in MEP or another video file converter. - many userss here recommend Super - however the last time I installed it (late last year) I found that it installed a load of unwanted software/spamware.

Thanks for the reply, John.  Same issue with wmv files from screenshots.  MP4 files "produced" by MEP are okay.

I opened both files in GSpot.  It showed the correct file size and length for both.  (I couldn't figure out how to make Media Info work).

If MEP doesn't display the full size, I don't know how its Conversion would work.

This was a rare need, and I was glad that Win Movie Maker could do it.  I just wanted to understand why it happened.

Thanks again.

Hi Kami

. . . . Same issue with wmv files from screenshots . .

Are you capturing using other software?

This suggests there may be a codec issue - do you have any codec packs installed?

. . . . I don't know how its Conversion would work . . .

It was a bit of a long shot that just may work.

MediaInfo - once it is installed you right click a video file and you should get the option to open with MediaInfo.

Capturing with Debut.  MEP is too cumbersome and takes up way too much real estate.  (I can also get stills while getting video.)

I believe I have the codecs.  When I first exported in MEP to an MP4, it asked if I wanted to get the codec, and I let it.  Also.... Windows Movie Player has no problem playing the screen caps.

I did the right click thing but Media Info wasn't in the list.  That's okay, GSpot works well and is easy.

Thanks, Kami

Hi.... This is a FYI follow-up of sorts.

I realized the version of MediaInfo I had d/l was the command line version.    I got MediaInfo Light to work, and got the same file info as I did with GSpot.  (GSpot is a lot easier to use.)

I converted one of the mp4 files to WMV format.... and had the same issue with it in MEP.... even though it took over a minute to import it.

Interesting.

Hi Kami,

I hate unsolved puzzles like this!

Although I'm using XP not Win 7 I'd like to see if I get the same issue. So would it be possible for you to do either of the following:

1. Make a small, non-confidential project exhibiting the problem and use File > Backup > Copy project and media into folder, zip it up and upload it to a host site (or contact me via PM to email it). That gives me the closest scenario to emulate the problem here.

2. As a second best alternative, just upload one of the MP4 files.

Edit: Meanwhile I downloaded Debut and made a screen capture video of around 3 mins. The original was AVI (I must have missed an opportunity to change the output file format?) but I used the built-in converter to get a 27 MB MP4. That played correctly in full in MEP 2013 Premium. Also played fully in MX, albeit rather jerkily.

Haven't tried a webcam recording.

Terry, East Grinstead, UK. PC: i7 6700K, 4.0 GHz, 32GB with Win 10 pro. Used many earlier versions of MEPP, currently mainly MEPP 2016 & 2017 (Using scores of macro scripts to add functionality, tailored to these versions.)

Kami_1 wrote on 7/23/2013, 11:20 AM

Hi Terry,

The compressed version of the small file is about the same as the uncompressed file, about 53 MB.  I'm not sure what PM is... I have no messenger/chat software installed.

Assuming you downloaded the trial version, the selection of format choices is limited.  You might be able to use wmv, with which I got the same results in MEP.  Also, I'm guessing that your trial version is a lot newer than my 2 years old paid version.  So maybe it's a bug they've since fixed.... except that Win Movie Maker loads all of it and they play in Win Movie Player.

I very much appreciate your wanting to figure this out, but since WMM can load and trim the few files that need it (when I walk away from the computer while its recording), I can live with it.  I record off live nest cams (Cornell Labs), and I don't do any other editing with any of these files, which are mostly HD.

Thanks!

I hadn't noticed this, John, sorry.  I sent a reply.

Interesting development.  Today, I was able to import MP4 vid-cap files into MEP, even up to 6 minutes, captured today and yesterday.  But it still won't import the older files.  Verrrry interesting.

With the older file that I tried again, the entire file can be seen on the MEP timeline for a couple of seconds, then it suddenly cuts.  Very strange.

Thanks John and Terry!
