Screen Capture & Audio

SCREEN CAPTURING

I am able to do screen captures, but they don't have any sound, although there is a soundtrack under the resultant video, and I can hear the sound clearly from the PC screen as the video capture is in progress.

Looking at the Screen Capture dialog, I see blocks numbered 1-4:

In "4. Record Control" it says "To record sound that is heard from the PC, please click on 'Recording level' and select the correct recording source. This will usually be 'Stereo Mix', 'What you hear' or others".

Under that is a Level Control button, next to which are indicators for L: and R:, both reading -60 dB, then the message "Warning: The audio level is too low (maximum level > -20 dB)"

THE MAIN PROBLEM IS...

I can't find any "Recording level" to click on, or anything else that allows me to select any options such as "Stereo Mix" or "What you hear", or anything remotely similar.

Does anyone have any idea what I'm supposed to do to capture the audio as well as the screen?

Hi

As the sound card is a Realtek chipset - and looking at the image you posted -  the stereo mixer is not enabled  - open Control panel, Sounds and set the options shown in this image - you right click in the centre on a blank area to get the popup menu.

When screen recording select stereo mixer in MEP record settings

Oh, this is so frustrating!

John, thanks for the tip about Stereo Mix. Getting there for me was somewhat different to whatever Windows version you're using, but I did finally manage to get Stereo Mix to appear in the Recording Control, and then un-mute it. However I never did find a way to actually "select" Stereo Mix instead of Microphone (as I saw in some search results). But still, it's working now. Well, sort of...

I am now recording beautiful sound from the screen, but the MP4 that I'm trying to capture is now just showing up in MEP as all black on the video timeline.

So I've gone from video and no sound, to sound and no video.

Have no idea what I did. As far as I know I didn't interfere with any video settings while messing with the sound stuff, but I guess I must have.

I'm playing the MP4 fullscreen in VLC Media Player 2.0.2, same as I was before when I had video but no audio.

Hi

Apologies - did not see you was on XP, instructions was for Win 7

If you are playing the mp4 in VLC, do you have the video file on your computer or is it on the Internet?

If it is on your computer then there is no need to try and record it - import it directly into MEP..

Hi John.

Originally the sequence I wanted to record was a PowerPoint presentation and I wanted it as a video to embed into a webpage. When screen recording failed with that (the original audio problem) I messed about until I finally got the PowerPoint converted online to an MP4, and downloaded it.

But then I was sidetracked by the wish to get MEP's screen capturing working properly for future use. With the benefit of hindsight I probably should have continued my experimentation with the original online PowerPoint presentation, but without thinking it through properly I was trying to capture the recently downloaded video playing in VLC.

I don't have time to get back to it right now, but perhaps recording from VLC might be a problem. As soon as I get a chance I'll go back to trying to record the online PowerPoint presentation and see if it works now with the changes I've made.

Thanks very much for your help.
